1. A book written by Chris Bailey 2. It is categorised by.. Advertising photography is all about creating an image which best sells a given product. Promotional photography is similar to advertising photography although it may be commissioned in order to raise the profile of a product but not for direct advertising purposes. What type of lenses could be used? The type of lens that could have been used for these images are telephoto lenses or other lenses with a narrow field of views such as 35mm or 50mm lenses. This affects the image because the focus is very direct on the product, especially with zoom or wide aperture lenses like the 35/50mm lenses that can go to f/1.4 or even sometimes f/1.2. This creates a very focused look without any distractions. The purpose of using this lens is to make sure that the product is the focal point of the image, allowing the viewer to stay attracted to the product not the things around it or the background. My personal opinion of this style of imagery is that it is a very smart and technical style of photography, although there is a lot of manipulation there is also a lot of thought going into how to make it stand out and be different to anything the consumer has seen before. Advertisement and Promotional 3. Image control McDonalds Ad: Is this image controlled or manipulated? Explain why: This image is obviously heavily controlled and manipulated. I can see this quickly by the main part of the image. Chicken and salad are exploding out of the wrap revealing all the McDonalds deli goodness. The lighting is also artificial, it is very overpowering and highlighted as if to show the wrap being surrounded by a glowing halo. And the fading green bokeh style background has obviously been placed there to make the sharp detailed wrap stand out more. Lighting Techniques Army Recruitment Ad: For the image on the left, the use of ambient light has created a realistic and believable image. The natural colours and military theme create a fast paced mood. As usual the reserve recruitment advert is very natural in colour and also in its photography style, as It doesnt look staged or manipulated, especially in its lighting. 4. Post-Production Does post production taken place? Explain why, alongside your justification: Nike: Post production definitely takes place in this advertisement in order to show speed and energy. The football player is leaving a trail of dust and dirt behind him and he speeds down the pitch after the ball, with the ground exploding with every step he takes. The lighting has been manipulated to highlight the player in the scene and the corners of the image have been darkened with a vignette style. Photographers in the field.. How has past photographers have used this style? The style of photography shown in the lynx advert is Low Key Lighting alongside the controlled set up of the image. Rick Nunn is a photographer that specialises in the Low Key Modelling photography style and the lynx advert is very similar to his style. Choose an artist and write a short biography: Rick Nunn, the photographer, is a self employed photographer from Lincoln. He has a keen spirit for photography, strobing, cats, coffee, comics, beards and design. One of his specialities is the use of strobe lighting to create deep atmosphere within his photography, for example his low key photography that capture the viewer and really hold them tight. This style of photography would appear in: Sporting adverts or technology adverts, as it creates a sense of depth and mystery against the dark background with a highlighted outline.. 5. Archetype Image What contexts could this image be seen? This image could be shown in newspapers, magazines and on websites in order to advertise the beverage company. For example the Coca-Cola zero advert on the right shows the basics of advertising photography, the use of 3 basic colours, red, white, and black, the house colours of Coca-Cola. Alongside the image of a product with a bold title and the use of the logo integrated into more text. The advantages of photographing in this style are: The image is likely to come out as attractive as it has been made similar to a certain context or style. The photographer doesnt take any risks or try anything new, they stick to the usual codes and conventions in order to keep it simple but effective. Disadvantages of photographing in this style are: The images will be similar to many others, the codes and conventions have been stuck to and there is no originality within the image that may capture someones attention even more so than the usual Archetype image. Things I like about the image are: It is very simple yet attractive, the poster shows the product looking mysterious almost criminal in a way. The red glow almost looks like sirens behind it. The Font also suggests this criminal idea, very bold and straight to the point, rather than the usual fancy Coca-Cola font. The criminal idea is possible considering the Coke Vs Zero promotion that went on for a while, to show how similar the two are. The image suggests that its So Similar Its Criminal. 6. It is categorised by: Photography that has the purpose to sell clothing and promote fashion labels. The photography is often shown in newspapers and magazines, but also on posters in malls or urban cities. What type of lenses could be used? The type of lens that could have been used for these images are: Lenses that arent too wide or too narrow, such as 50mm f/1.4 or an 85mm f/1.4. These lenses will bring the borders closer to the model and have a much sharper focus on them. They can also create a heavy amount of blur/bokeh due on the background due to the very wide aperture which will bring the viewers eyes to the model even more. Although the aperture can be changed to a narrower one which will create a sharper background if thats the effect that is wished for, if it compliments the model/clothing for example. This affects the image because: The narrow field of view and excellent sharpness of these lenses will make create a perfect focus on the model and the clothing shown. Although the large range of apertures allows the photographer to create all sorts of focus styles to affect the mood of the image. The purpose of using this lens is to: Give the photographer a range of focus options and to make sure the view isnt too wide which may take attention away from the model. My personal opinion of this style of imagery is that: It looks very appealing, especially when done well using the right kind of lenses and focus styles depending on the item of clothing. Fashion Photography 7. Image control Is this image controlled or manipulated? Explain why: Chanel: This image is controlled and manipulated, they model is obviously posing for the shoot and the image is in black and white. As this is a modern image it is likely that the black and white was created in post processing to match the old look of the background. Is this image observational or candid? Explain why: Chanel: This image is neither, the model has been posed against the certain background, her stance and positioning will all have been scripted to make the image look the best, or most suitable to the clothing line as possible. Lighting Techniques For the images on the left: Napapijri: The lighting looks quite natural, so its possible that only reflectors where used to highlight the models against the very bright background. The lighting will have been manipulated in post processing, definitely highlighting the models and to give the entire image a slight retro feel. The contrast also seems to have been edited in post processing in order to make the models stand out against the bright background. 8. Post-Production Does post production taken place? Explain why, alongside your justification: Post production has definitely taken place in the TOPSHOP fashion photography advert. The model is totally flawless and has very unrealistic lighting upon her. There is a very soft and warm tone that has been placed onto the image in post processing to make it look much more relaxing and also to make the model look even more flawless. Photographers in the field.. How has past photographers have used this style? Photographers in the past have used different techniques to get the same results in post-processing that we do nowadays. For example there are ways of getting different lighting or contrast effects by leaving the images in different types of chemicals. Choose an artist and write a short biography: Mario Sorrenti, born October 24th 1971, is a world renowned photographer that specialises in fashion photography. He has worked alongside many famous fashion brands including Calvin Klein. This style of photography would appear in popular fashion magazines such as VOGUE AND ELLE. These magazines feature many images of models promoting fashionable clothing and designer labels. 9. Archetype Image What contexts could this image be seen? This image could be seen in Magazines, newspapers and websites in order to advertise a certain fashion label. These contexts allow print and digital media to be shown, and are places that fashion advertising is always shown. Whether its the iconic brands or shops advertising new ranges or promotions. The advantages of photographing in this style are: The images are proven to be attractive and gain attention from the target market, whoever that shall be. The lighting is usually boosted up to really stand out and not look dull anywhere, and the image is usually turned to black and white to give what is really a very simple image, some atmosphere. Disadvantages of photographing in this style are: It is very basic and very unoriginal. The style is boring and doesnt really compliment a lot of clothing. Especially clothing for the younger generations urban wear which is very common now. The entire images dont stand out from one another at all. Things I like about the image are: The whole colour collection of the image is very simple, plainly black/grey/white to keep things very simple. Although the blacks are very deep and the whites are overpoweringly white, creating a sharp contrast that is very eye catching. 10. It is categorised by: Photojournalists create pictures that contribute to the news media and help tell a story. War, sport and paparazzi style photography are just a few of the styles that fall in this category. The entire images are the heart of the news storys, its the photographers job to provide the public with photographic evidence of what is happening, a graphic for the news story we are being told. What type of lenses could be used? The type of lens that could have been used for these images are: Telephoto lenses are often used for photojournalism, these lenses give the photojournalist the ability to get closer to the action photographically rather than physically as that can often be dangerous, depending on the story. This affects the image because: The telephoto lenses mean the photojournalist can get closer to the action, which in turn brings the public closer to the action when the images are shown on the news or in magazines. They bring a lot more detail to an image, and can show us a lot more in depth, rather than a wide shot of a Syrian town with some billowing smoke, we can see the father of 4 putting his life in danger as he fires at opposing troops. The purpose of using this lens is to: Bring the photographer and the public closer to the action, and to tell the story in more detail. The lenses also allow the photojournalist to keep out of danger in a war zone for example, as he may be totally exposed, with only his Nikon to shoot with. My personal opinion of this style of imagery is that: It is one of the best styles of photography known to man, they tell a real story as it happens, or after, even 100 years later war images still capture our emotions as if we were living the time. Photo Journalism 11. Image control Is this image controlled or manipulated? Explain why: This image is not controlled or digitally manipulated, it is simply a soldier in the Vietnam war being photographed. He may have simply smiled for the camera but that is all, the uniform, background and the rest is all real. Is this image observational or candid? Explain why. This image is observational, showing the soldier in his working environment. The photographer may have quickly grabbed his attention for the shot to look natural. Lighting Techniques For the images on the left, the use of natural ambient lighting is the one and only source of light. I know this because it doesnt look artificial and and especially on the bottom image it definitely appears to be a spur of the moment shot. 12. Post-Production Does post production taken place? Explain why, alongside your justification: Post production does take place in the shown image of the child below. The image has been manipulated to show the shadows with more darkness and the eyes have been made sharper. The contrast has also been boosted in order to give the image more depth and to give it a darker feel. Photographers in the field.. How has past photographers have used this style? Past photographers have used techniques in dark rooms to create similar results, using something called dodging and burning, and by using different chemicals for the photos. Choose an artist and write a short biography: Ed Kashi is a photojournalist, filmmaker and educator dedicated to documenting the social and political issues that define our times. A sensitive eye and an intimate relationship to his subjects are signatures of his work. As a member of VII Photo Agency, Kashi has been recognized for his complex imagery and its compelling rendering of the human condition. This style of photography would appear: This style of photography would appear in newspapers and on online articles, or even magazines. This is because the photography styles purpose is to show a news story as a graphic rather than a textual media. 13. Archetype Image What contexts could this image be seen? These images can be shown online on news pages or in articles, or in newspapers and magazines. These contexts feature images from current and even past world affairs, to give the public knowledge. The images are usually not edited, or only edited slightly due to the images having to show the event how it really was. The advantages of photographing in this style are: Photographing in this style is effective because it can be very very powerful to look at. Usually an image may represent something, but show it in a metaphorical manor , where as photojournalism tells it how it is, within one glance we see a very powerful image, something we dont see often, sometimes something we dont want to see, or want to ever experience, but it can really capture us. This style of photography is good because: It captures the viewers mind and heart, they see whats happening, putting faces and people to the story, rather than just words. It makes the world events much more real and personal to the viewer. Disadvantages of photographing in this style are: It often holds a lot of political and emotional views which are varied between people. These images can often be one sided, such as showing Brutal protests in brazil which were in fact caused by the government over spending on world cup related needs rather than helping develop the country and its poor. The photographer has to be careful to show the truth, and make sure the facts about the image are true before sharing or publishing it. Things I like about the image are: It shows that is was taken in the moment, the photographer didnt stop and wait for good lighting or for the other photographer to leave the frame, he took it as it happened, to show the true disaster it was. 14. It is categorised by: Pictures of a persons face usually, capturing the features and expression in detail, often using surrounding lighting to create a mood or to boost the expressions meaning. What type of lenses could be used? The type of lens that could have been used for these images are: 35mm and 50mm f/1.8 lenses are usually the chosen lens for basic and professional portrait photography. These lenses allow the photographer to get a lot of facial detail and the ability to have a large range of f-stops in order to keep a certain proportion of the face in focus. This affects the image because: This gives the face sharpness against a soft blurred background, or the eyes sharpness against the rest of the faces features, it depends purely on how close the face is and the aperture settings. The purpose of using this lens is to: The lenses purpose is to give the photographer more control of aperture, often going from f/1.4 to f/22 which gives them a huge range, the f/1.4- f/2.8 will be the most common for the portrait photography. My personal opinion of this style of imagery is that: It is a very technical style of photography and takes a huge amount of skill to get a good outcome. For example the bottom image is very basic, where as the top one, with less editing, is one of the most popular portraits ever taken, and has one many awards. Portraiture 15. Image control Is this image controlled or manipulated? Explain why: The top image is controlled, and manipulated, the girl has been posed for the image, and quite possibly had physical preparations for the image such as her hair and makeup done. Is this image observational or candid? Explain why.. The bottom image is not observational or candid, it has been posed and edited to be black and white and very contrasty. Lighting Techniques For the images on the left, the use of artificial lighting is obvious, there has obviously been flash to bring out the details and flaws in the old woman and the flash on the top image is to highlight the face and hair. 16. Post-Production Does post production taken place? Explain why, alongside your justification: Post production definitely takes place in the before and after image below this one. Colour correction is the edits done to the portrait, there have been no blemish edits or retouching. The highlights have been reduced and the shadows have been increased, the saturation may also have been increased to make the skin tone and background colours pop a little more. The blacks also seem to have been increased to create a deeper contrasting look in the image. The exposure will have been reduced slightly as well in order to make the entire image a bit darker and gloomier to create a more dramatic effect. Photographers in the field: How has past photographers have used this style? Photographers in the past have used dodging and burning to darken and lighten parts of an image to create the image they want. For example methods were used to give the image a more dramatic mood and effect or methods to highlight the shadows. Choose an artist and write a short biography: Annie Liebovitz was born October 2nd 1949, in Waterbury- Connecticut. In 1970 she took a job at rolling stone, following her dream of being a professional photographer. In 1983 she began working for the Vanity Fair magazine, and during the late 80s she started working on high profile advertising campaigns. Since the early 90s shes been publishing and exhibiting her work. This style of photography would appear: This kind of photography would appear in magazines and on websites. Portraiture isnt only for fashion or beauty purposes, it can be very artistic, so it can even be used for personal use on canvases as dcor. 17. Archetype Image What contexts could this image be seen? This image could be seen in newspapers, magazines, websites, galleries and for individual clients. Portrait images have many purposes, they can be simple for documents or artistic for beauty and effect. The advantages of photographing in this style are: This style of photography can be used for many different contexts, which means selling photographs can be easier. It is also easier to make a personal business out of portrait or family portrait photography, as there are a lot of people willing to pay to have it done rather than paying for a photographers abstract or architecture shots. Disadvantages of photographing in this style are: It can be very hard to get good portrait shots, as it usually has to involve interpersonal skills such as feeling confident enough to tell someone how to pose etc, compared to still life photography or street photography where you have la lot less control, and dont need it to make an image look good. Things I like about the image are: I like the mix of highlights and shadows in this image, the highlighted, flawless face against the harsh dark contrast of the hair. I also like how detailed the features are. The face has obviously had its blemishes removed etc but the eye lashes and creases in the lips have been left sharp and eye catching. I also like the models facial expression, how it does not look un-natural. 18. High street studio photograph can involve a few different types of photography such as portraiture and wedding photography. Families or friends usually pay for the shoot and dress appropriately, although sometimes the shoots are themed and the participants dress up at the studio, often in old fashioned clothing or uniform. What type of lenses could be used? The type of lens that could have been used for these images are: 35mm or 50mm lenses would be popular with this style of photography, this is because the photographer has to fit quite a few people into the frame, and also the photographer needs to stand back, but not too far, he still needs to have slight control over the subjects but also be a comfortable distance away from them. This affects the image because: This affects the image by altering the lenses field of view in turn making a narrower border around the subjects, this makes sure the image is close rather than having too much space around the image, and having to crop the borders which will reduce image quality. The purpose of using this lens is to: This lens creates a good depth of field and excellent sharpness upon the subjects, the range of apertures also allows the photographer to focus on a wide range of subjects numbers. My personal opinion of this style of imagery is that: I personally do not like this style of photography, it seems rare that an entire family enjoys the experience leaving the images looking un natural and awkward. High Street Studio 19. Image control Is this image controlled or manipulated? Explain why: This image is controlled and manipulated, the lighting is artificial, along with the post processing of the images to make the subjects look flawless and in many ways better. The subjects will have also been told how to pose for the photo in order to make it look more appealing. Is this image observational or candid? Explain why: This image is not observational or candid as the subjects have been posed rather than caught in the moment. Lighting Techniques For the images on the left, the use of artificial lighting has been done in order to make the subjects look better and to make the image look cleaner and sharper (top image) with the bright white background. 20. Post-Production Does post production taken place? Explain why, alongside your justification: Post production does take place in this image, the highlights have been boosted, and the contrast has been boosted in order to make the background blacker and the details pop more. The boosted highlights make the teeth whiter, as-well as the glimmer in the babys eye and the brightness of the skin. Photographers in the field.. How has past photographers have used this style? Dodging and burning has been used in the past in order to make highlights and shadows lighter or darker. For example making the white background lighter by increasing the highlights using a variety of techniques. Choose an artist and write a short biography: This style of photography would appear possibly in galleries if it was aimed less at a personal level but more at a selling level. The images can also be used on a personal level, for example families going out to have photos together or imagers of new-borns and parents. 21. Archetype Image What contexts could this image be seen? This image could be used as a personal photograph or in media contexts such as magazines and online articles. This is because the shot does not look like the average family portrait, allowing it to appear like more. Such as the new era logo on the hat could be advertising. The advantages of photographing in this style are: It can be used in many different contexts and appeals to mostly everyone. The use of black and white colours gives the image a lot more depth and emotion, rather than being a plain white box style highlighted image. Disadvantages of photographing in this style are: The photographer has to be very good at controlling and guiding the subjects who have no photographic or modelling experience, the photographer has to make the emotions shown real to make the picture the best it can be. Things I like about the image are: It is obviously a great father-son portrait photograph but the image is so good that it isnt only powerful to the parents, instead it is actually appealing to others as it seems to hold a lot of depth and power. 22. It is categorised by: Architectural photography is the photographing of buildings and similar structures. These images are often abstract to create a more engaging effect rather than simply being an image of a building. What type of lenses could be used? The type of lens that could have been used for these images are: Wide angle and fish eye lenses could be used to take photos of buildings in order to get the entire subject in. Although super wide lenses can leave the photographer with warped images, but this can be fixed in post processing. This affects the image because: It allows large structures to fit inside the frame of the camera, rather than being cut in half, unless that is the way the photographer wants it. The post processing will reduce or hide the warping from the image, although it may reduce the image quality slightly. The purpose of using this lens is to: This lenses purpose is to fit an entire large structure into a frame without the photographer having to stand super far back, if that is even possible as it usually isnt in cities and places of amazing architecture. My personal opinion of this style of imagery is that: I think this stye of photography is amazing, the images have so much detail that it is all very engaging and attractive to the viewer and myself. Architectural 23. Image control Is this image controlled or manipulated? Explain why: This image is not controlled or manipulated, apart for in post processing where the image may have had lighting and colour edits. Is this image observational or candid? Explain why: This image is observational,. I know this because the photographer had no way of controlling the scene, and because it contains no living objects such as people or animals, it isnt candid. The image is how the photographer saw it and how it looks naturally, minus the post processing edits. Lighting Techniques For the images on the left, the use of.. The bottom image is a long exposure shot, this gives the scene a very intriguing colour and lighting effects. Such as the road is covered in streaks of lights, this is from cars coming past whilst the shitter has been left open, sensing all the light waves . The image may have also been edited in post production to maybe lessen the highlights from the cars below the scene. 24. Post-Production Does post production taken place? Explain why, alongside your justification: Post production may take place in order to reduce the highlights coming from the street lights, which could look over exposed and too off putting in the image. The images colour may have been cooled down with a bluish tint in an attempt to make the colours look more natural, as the auto exposure can often make the image too warm and orange tinted. Photographers in the field.. How has past photographers have used this style? Photographers in the pasy have photographed similar to the image above my using a narrow aperture and a longer shutter speed in order to take the picture when it was darker. They also used burning and dodging techniques in order to make areas of the image lighter and darker. Choose an artist and write a short biography: She worked for two years as a photographer before turning to architectural photography. She has been cited several times as the "photographer to the starchitects," with "images that crackle with light, shadow, and texture, always forming an intimate investigation of the building in question." This style of photography would appear: This style would appear in shops on canvas prints or in galleries, often featuring abstract architecture photography. 25. Archetype Image What contexts could this image be seen? This image can be seen magazines and articles online about many things such as the future or modern life. The image could also be seen in a home for personal use on a canvas. It could even be in books about development or architecture. The advantages of photographing in this style are: There are a few advantages of photographing in this architectural style, such as the way something simple and even un-appealing can be made to look intriguing and amazing. Whether it be an iconic building or a ramshackle building in Indian slums. Disadvantages of photographing in this style are: It can be very hard to make an already astonishing building look even better in the form of a photograph. Plus modern buildings are constantly having renovations or even window cleaners up the sides or cranes on top which can make a building look ugly, especially in an image where the true scale and innovation of the building cant really be felt. Things I like about the image are: I like how this image shows a building reaching up towards the sky. Its almost like the building is representing the modern world and technology as it looks very futuristic, and it is reaching up towards the sky, as in to victory or greatness, as though modern technology is driving us towards a great future. 26. It is categorised by: Illustration is categorised by photographs that are used to give the viewer more information about a certain subject. Styles and techniques hugely depend on what the illustration Is about. What type of lenses could be used? The type of lens that could have been used for these images are: The step by step tutorial image could have had a simple 18-55mm lens with an aperture of f/8 to keep everything sharp and clear. This affects the image because: If the image was taken with a narrow field of view lens such as a 50mm then the subject may not be very easy to photograph because the photographer will have to stand further away from whatever platform it is on. Plus the f/8 aperture will bring more of the subject into focus. The purpose of using this lens is to: The lens will allow the entire subject into the frame and make sure that is it all My personal opinion of this style of imagery is that.. Illustration 27. Image control Is this image controlled or manipulated? Explain why: The TopGear illustration has been controlled. I know this because the cars have obviously been placed into certain positioning I order to look symmetrical for the image. The location of the image is also in some kind of large warehouse that the cars have been put in to give the image a more mechanical and manly look to it, as the target audience of the magazine is men. Is this image observational or candid? Explain why: The shot is neither, as the cars and location are all a setup to make the image look the best possible. Lighting Techniques For the images on the left, the use of: Both images have the use of artificial lighting in them, spotlights in particular. The top image has multiple spot lights dotted around to make the cars shine and o make the colours really pop, and the bottom image also does as it needs to have all the details showing in the skeleton using the lighting to highlight all of its features. 28. Post-Production Does post production taken place? Explain why, alongside your justification: A very light amount of post production takes place in these images below, it appears the only post production has been the cropping and possibly the slight motion blur behind the car, unless it was a tracking shot which is quite likely. The colours all appear natural and quite dull which suggests there was no effort to improve them. Photographers in the field.. How has past photographers have used this style? Photographers in the past have taken photographs and had them printed into newspapers and magazine articles using ink prints. Choose an artist and write a short biography: Tony Northrup, an American photographer who has dedicated his work to photography, hes written a book on photography and has many visual illustrations inside it which show the reader exactly how to use certain styles and techniques, and what there images could be coming out looking like. This style of photography would appear: These styles of photography can appear in how to books or websites, or in news articles, physical and web based. The illustrations can be of almost anything, even how to do certain styles of photography so the list of styles and contexts are endless. 29. Archetype Image What contexts could this image be seen? This image could be used alongside newspaper articles, as a way of visually showing the reader what the story is about. The image can also be used in the same way but alongside an online news article, on websites such as skynews. In most contexts this image will be seen next to a textual description or article, as its only purpose is to inform the person what the story is about, alongside the headline, before they read about it in depth. The advantages of photographing in this style are: Photographing in this style is good because the images can be sold to stock image sites that will sell on your photographs to companies that need the images for good prices. These companies can be ones that run advertisements, newspapers, online articles, books and more. The images can also be easy to take, the main thing is that they are appealing, and they can be of anything because somebody probably needs the image. Disadvantages of photographing in this style are: This is not a very artistic or exciting style at all, a photographer will have to have a lot of illustration images in order to make money off them, so basic photography + boring photography + small chances of good prices = very little enrichment from the photography style compared to other challenging, interesting and money making styles of photography. Things I like about the image are: This image is very simple, and reads one thing to the viewer Using A Mobile Phone. Totally simple, it shows someone simply using a mobile phone. The image could be used for any phone related articles. From phone hacking scandals to falling call prices. It plain and simple shows the viewer that the following information is about phones or their users. 30. Fine art photography can involved so many different styles of photography and use so many photographic techniques that its almost impossible to define. Usually It involves the photographers deeper thoughts and emotions on a subject, which are captured in an image. Subjects can be anything, although nudes, architecture and wildlife are all popular. Images can be colour or black and white. They may have a large amount of post production done or nothing. What type of lenses could be used? The type of lens that could have been used for these images are: Any lens can be used for fine are photography, because any style of image can be classed as fine art as long as it holds some kind of deeper meaning than just a frozen moment in time. This affects the image because: It allows photographers who want to put the style into practice use any lens and makes every image different rather than having them all look the same, because the edits are often similar, so the difference in lenses and focal lengths create a nice difference between the images. The purpose of using this lens is to: Give the photographer full customisation over the style he is shooting in, whether they want to shoot fine art cityscapes or fine art portraits, it can be done with any lens and still have the powerful effect of fine art photography. My personal opinion of this style of imagery is that: It is a very interesting style of photography, but only some of the images seem to have a deeper meaning, many just appear to be black and white abstracts or nudes. Fine Art 31. Image control Is this image controlled or manipulated? Explain why: The bottom image is not controlled or manipulated physically, as it is simply a bridge with a road running through it. The photographer has no ability to change the scene. Is this image observational or candid? Explain why: The image is observational, as the photographer sees it, the long straight road and symmetrical patterned ground, top, and sides in the form of steel structures and the road. There is no main subject in the image, the point is that the photographer cant actually see into the depths of the fog, yet the symmetry guides our eyes into it. Thats what makes it interesting. Lighting Techniques For the images on the left, the use of: Natural lighting gives the bottom image a much more natural and realistic feel, as though it really represents true life and the unknown. Where as the top image uses artificial lighting in the form of camera flash from the front and left to cast a pure dark shadow on the right of the model. This creates a mysterious effect and mood but is not as dramatic as it doesnt look natural at all. 32. Post-Production Does post production taken place? Explain why, alongside your justification: The image below has some simple methods of post production, for example cropping and straightening the image. The horizon is amazingly straight and had to be done in post, as it looks perfect. The edges may also have been cropped to possibly better the image. It will have also been turned to black and white, plus had some possible noise reduction as its a long exposure and very shadowy which usually presents a lot of graininess. Photographers in the field.. How has past photographers have used this style? Past photographers have used the dodging and burning techniques to create mood and effect in an image to represent how they feel about an image, or to match an effect they are trying to create. Choose an artist and write a short biography Ian Bramham: Ian is an award-winning fine art photographer and architect living in Poynton, Cheshire with his wife and two children. His photography style is simple, leaving enough room for the viewers mind and imagination to create the ffect and emotion for themselves, to make every image personal to the viewer. This style of photography would appear: On personal items such as canvases or even digital wallpapers. They can also appear in galleries and magazines that focus on art and design, and photography,. 33. Archetype Image What contexts could this image be seen? This image could be used in many contexts, but mainly for personal and gallery use. Such as being printed onto a canvas or framed for use in a house or room. Or in terms of in a gallery, it could be printed large and shown off to the public. Because it is fine art and holds more than just the moment in time, it could be used as a book cover as the writer may deem it necessary to the book as it may represent the story in some kind of ways. The advantages of photographing in this style are: There are no limits with fine art photography, there are no certain subjects that need to be involved for it to be categorised and fine art, whether it be cars or nudes, it can be fine art, as long as the image is more than just a freeze frame of time. The images can also be very appealing to people easily using the correct editing techniques to give the image a much deeper and interesting mood. Disadvantages of photographing in this style are: It can e very hard to define this style, so it will be hard to sell the images as the Fine Art genre as it really depends on the viewer, its usually a case of the image being more to the photographer than a pretty scene, but it also has to be more to the viewer, although in many cases people will perceive the images differently and have very varied opinions on the images depending on their personal preference. Things I like about the image are: I like the simplicity of this image. It is made up of very simple shapes, rectangles and triangles mostly. I also like how distinct the border between land and the horizon is, cutting the image into two, with the barn subjects overlapping the horizon. I also like how they all line up so perfectly, in the image, from how the photographer has perceived the view, rather than them seeming to be out of place if taken from a different spot or angle. 34. It is categorised by: This is usually done with observational photography rather than staging. Images may be subject to some post production but not so much that it makes the image unrealistic. A range of lenses can be used depending on the situation and subject. The documentary style means rather than telling a stiry in one image, it can be told through multiple to show it in more detail and to give a better picture of what is happening. What type of lenses could be used? The type of lens that could have been used for these images are: Any types of lenses can be used for documentary photography, although its often a telephoto lens as it allows the photographer to stay photographically close to the subject, even when its impossible. This affects the image because: Because it allows the photographer to stay close to the subject giving the image more detail and making sure the viewer can see the subject properly. The purpose of using this lens is to: Make sure that the image is sharp and clear and photographically close to the subject in order to create a better documented image. My personal opinion of this style of imagery is that: It is good but can be replaced easily with videography which I prefer for the documentary style. Documentary 35. Image control Is this image controlled or manipulated? Explain why: This image is not controlled or manipulated as it is obviously a shot taken in the moment of the kids playing rather than setting them up for the shot. Is this image observational or candid? Explain why: The image is observational and candid as the kids are not posing for the image, they are just playing as they would whether the photographer was taking pictures or not. The fact that there is not perfect composition shows that the image was taken without much preparation, shown by a subject appearing from the right but being totally pointless to the image. Lighting Techniques For the images on the left, the use of: Natural lighting have shown the images to be much more realistic and suited to the documentary style they have been pictured in. There is no artificial lighting in the images, only the light from the sky which is obvious because there are no obscure or out of place shadows in the images. 36. Post-Production Does post production taken place? Explain why, alongside your justification: Post production does take place in the image below, the colours appear to have been boosted by raising the saturation, this does not reduce the realism of the documentary style, it only exaggerates the effect of the scene and how colourful it is to the eye. There also appears to be some kind of darkened corners and possibly the shadows boosted in order to make the image brighter, as the sky and some of the colours look slightly washed out. Photographers in the field.. How has past photographers have used this style? Past photographers would have used a lot of dodging and burning I order to make an image similar to the style above. The background would have been burned and the face possibly dodged, as well as the wooden fence in front of the boys face. Choose an artist and write a short biography Ed Thompson is a British photographer, artist and lecturer. His own photographic work has focused on various subjects over the years from covering environmental issues, subcultures and the consequences of war. This style of photography would appear: This style of photography could appear in online articles and newspapers, as they are usually informative of an event. 37. Archetype Image What contexts could this image be seen? This image could be seen in magazines, galleries, newspapers, and online articles of documented photo trips. Such as a photographer following a certain Indian tribe or family and documenting their day to day life in pictures. The advantages of photographing in this style are: This style of photography is good because it can capture a lot in one image, and even more in a series of documented ones, like the saying goes, a pictures worth a thousand words, and every picture tells a story. So the images can explain a lot more than the photographer would be able to tell verbally if hed been on a trip or spent time with an eastern family and lived their type of life for a week or two. Disadvantages of photographing in this style are: It can be hard to show how individual someone's life is, because there can only be subtle differences that make someone's life so different to our own. It can also be hard for a photographer to find something interesting to document photographically in the first place. Things I like about the image are: I like how it looks as if the man is ready to tell a story, the depth of the image also makes him stand out from the background a lot, showing that he is an individual, he has a life to live, and a story to share. Its almost like the title page image to a series of images about his life or his communities life.
