1. INTRODUCTION.

1.1. The Project and Aims.

Newstead Station is a large pastoral property which has long been part of the local

sheep and cattle industry in the Shire of Inverell. The property is located on the north

side of Elsmore Road, approximately 25 kilometres east of Inverell in the Macintyre

Valley.

Newstead Station consists of Newstead Homestead (1841), a shearing shed (1857),

church ruins (1862) and a cemetery (1862) originally within an open rural landscape.

The homestead is an expansive weatherboard residence that was occupied by the

Anderson family. It is the oldest homestead and garden in Inverell Shire. Now

associated with ruins of a former memorial church, the family was laid to rest in the

nearby cemetery. The station’s shearing shed was raised to fame in the iconic painting

by Tom Roberts, The Golden Fleece.

The Newstead Station Group at Elsmore Road in Inverell is the subject of this

photographic archival recording. It was requested by Inverell Shire Council on the 21st

of March 2016. This photographic record of the residence, shearing shed, church ruins

and cemetery is intended to contribute to our understanding and appreciation of historic

homesteads, associated buildings, contexts and interrelationships, as well as to provide

a long term record for present and future generations.

1.2. Research and Limitations.

Photographic archival recordings are usually subject to time and coordination

limitations and are influenced by weather and light conditions on the day of recording.

Also, only a brief background of the subject heritage item and its site has been provided

for the purpose of placing the homestead, shearing shed, church ruins and cemetery in

their historical context.

1.3. Author Identification.

Photographs included in this archival recording were taken by Gerald Steding, the

author of this report. Gerald has a Masters degree in heritage conservation (U.Syd) and is

accredited as a professional photographer (APP) by the Australian Institute of

Professional Photography (AIPP). The author would like to thank Mr Anthony Alliston

and Ms Elise Short of Inverell Shire Council for requesting and accommodating this

project.

1.4. Repository.

Two copies of this photographic archival recording with prints in archival slips and

folders have been provided to Inverell Shire Council for their use and archives. A

bound copy with ‘thumbnail prints’ is also included for their local studies library.

2. METHODOLOGY.

Photographs were taken by Gerald Steding from the 28th

of June to the 1st of July 2016.

This photographic archival record has been prepared in accordance with the procedures

and approaches outlined in Photographic Recording of Heritage Items Using Film or

Digital Capture and considers the earlier guidelines How to Prepare Archival Records

of Heritage Items.1 It includes:

1. Inventory sheets;

2. Statutory heritage listing status;

3. A brief historical context of the Homestead Group recorded;

4. A description of the items, their fabric, form, sites and locations;

5. Statement of heritage significance;

6. Location plan;

7. Photograph plan showing positions from where photographs were taken;

8. Photograph list with image and sequence numbers;

9. Colour catalogues with thumbnail prints and sequence numbers; and

10. Labelled colour photographs on archival paper.

Photographic Equipment.

Photographs were taken using a Canon EOS 5DsR (DSLR camera full frame, 50

megapixels) and a Canon EOS 5D Mk2 (DSLR camera full frame, 21 megapixels) with

the following lenses:

Other equipment included but was not limited to:

Light stands;

Photographic scales.

Post production was carried out using:

Adobe Lightroom CC2015 (sorting, culling, RAW processing)

Adobe Photoshop CC2015

Photographs were processed on a Dell professional workstation and colour calibrated

monitors.

Files and Format.

Images were photographed as CR2 files, a Canon proprietary RAW file type. The CR2

files have been converted into non-proprietary uncompressed DNG RAW files as a

better long term archival solution. The need for additional XMP sidecar files (as would

be the case when using CR2 files) has therefore also been avoided using this publicly

available RAW format. The files were also saved as TIF files, including all metadata

(EXIF, IPTC and XMP). Profoto RGB is used as colour space to preserve the

maximum gamut in those TIF images. Please note that these TIF’s therefore need to be

viewed on a colour managed monitor to correctly display.

It should also be noted that JPG uses lossy compression and so is inappropriate for this

type of project. In this report the file numbering system relates to the photographic

catalogue sheets (provided below). Photograph plans are also included showing the

direction and location from where all individual photographs were taken.

The files are included with each copy of this recording and are stored on DVD. These

discs submitted contain:

1. Report in PDF format;

2. Images as RAW files; and

3. Images in TIF format.

Presentation.

This photographic archival recording is presented in an archival binder and slipcase

containing individual archival slip-sheets made from acid free polypropylene. These

archival packaging materials are stable and have been selected to optimise survival of

the photographic record.

Colour prints have been printed using an Epson Stylus Pro 3880 large format printer

with Epson Ultra Chrome K3 pigment ink and Canson Infinity Photo Lustre Premium

RC photographic paper.2 The photographic catalogue shows the images with reference

numbers also relating to the photographic plan. The larger prints are on A4 pages

within archival sleeves. These prints measure minimum 6 inches by 4 inches and are

placed in pairs on the A4 pages. Accompanying labels printed on the A4 pages present

the caption of each photograph, direction, date and authorship. These labels also form

part of the IPTC core metadata of each image file, both TIF and RAW.

DESCRIPTION

Construction Date Newstead Homestead (1841, additions in 1860s onwards), shearing shed (1857), church (1862) and cemetery (1862).

Physical Description Homestead The central rectangular part of the homestead is a single storey Colonial Vernacular cottage with a squared west component dating to the same period, 1841. The walls of the homestead consist of beaded weatherboard with some vertical timber slabs. Its iron roof covers timber shingles. Interior features include Colonial red cedar joinery 1841, early timber doors, rare carved chimney pieces, a molded arch and timber columns. Shearing Shed The shearing shed is a substantial timber structure with sheep yards attached. Built in 1857 its frame is of round timber bush posts. Its corrugated iron roof covers timber shingles. The fleece table and press remain intact. Some corrugated partitions have been added in later years. Counting yards remain in front of shed and holding yards behind. Church Once a fine memorial church with substantial brick buttresses and an entrance to the northeast, only the ruins of this building now stand. Built in 1862, the church burnt down in 1912.

Cemetery Sixteen grave markers survive east of church, the earliest of which is that of Colin Anderson who died in 1852. Its use has continued into the late twentieth century. The cemetery contains sandstone and marble, black and grey granite headstones. They include Celtic crosses, a simple cross, semicircular upright stelae with and without shoulders, a gabled upright slab, a low scroll, and desks with plaques. Some have wrought and iron surrounds with fleur-de-lies.

Modifications In 1865 a verandah was added to the west along with two outbuildings to the east. This verandah was later enclosed and further smaller extensions added to the south and northeast. Substantial alterations have also been made to the interior.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT Historical Notes In 1836, Joseph King claimed the land acting as superintendent for Clerk &

Rankin. Known as Frenchaye by 1838, the property became a sheep run worked by convicts and some free servants. Under the sole ownership of John Rankin the property was briefly named Glencorse in 1840. The following year the property was purchased by Duncan Sinclair and Dr Colin Anderson. Both lived there with their families from 1841. By 1845 Anderson had purchased his brother-in-law’s share, as Sinclair left to become a Presbyterian minister. Colin Anderson and Mary Sinclair had married in 1839. By 1847 over 30 people were employed on the sheep station. But tragedy struck in 1852 with the death of Colin Anderson at 46 years of age. The following year their young daughters Mary and Margaret died of Scarlet Fever. Mary Anderson then returned to England with her surviving 5 children, Jane, Alexander, Patrick, Duncan and John. Having returned with her family to Newstead by 1862, Mary had a memorial church built on the property for her husband and two daughters. The church was also used by the local community. It burnt down in 1912 and has been preserved as ruins for over a century. Mary Anderson passed away at the station in 1875. Meanwhile, others in the family had died from tuberculosis, a buggy accident and during child birth. Duncan and John Archibald Roberts became the new owners of Newstead. The property was divided between them into Newstead North owned by Duncan and Newstead South owned by John. In 1894 artist Tom Roberts stayed with Colin and Helen Anderson and their five children. It was this year that he painted their shearing shed in the iconic Golden Fleece. Roberts remained with the family for many months also painting Bailed Up and In the corner of Macintyre in 1895. One of our most treasured artists, his works hang in the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The Andersons sold Newstead North to Norman Bucknell in 1904. Meanwhile Newstead South remained with the Anderson family until 1974. In 1985 both properties were purchased by the McNeall Pastoral Company. Having reunited north and south Newstead, the pastoral company also restored the homestead.
