advanced creative photography course - introduction

The Advanced CREATIVE Photography Course is the next step in the VSS photography education program. It is the sequel to the intensive Photography Course and is aimed at students who already have a sound knowledge of photography. The course also serves as an update for established photographers who need to get to grips with the dynamic digital world.Assignments are mostly post-modern, but we do follow a classical approach with traditional film (which is by no means an out-dated medium) with certain applications.

VSS’s fully accredited part time twelve week advanced CREATIVE photography course leads to a part qualification (SAQA US Certificate), and credits towards a National Certificate: Photography, should you wish to pursue it and turn this into a career.

Creative photography does not fall from the sky - one has to develop one’s imagination, learn composition and proper manipulation of images to achieve the effect that inspires awe and admiration.

This course endeavors to teach you creative skills, as well as create opportunities for application of these skills in a multitude of genres, including silkscreen and (hand-print) darkroom work. Ultimately to become an artist using photography as a medium.

Due to potential students having to travel quite a distance for classes we have scheduled this course over 10 weeks apart from final presentation which will be an one-man exhibition: Ÿ one 3 hour lecture Tuesday night every week, the same lecture to be repeated on Friday nights.Ÿ morning theory followed by a practical photography session on Saturday, which will be repeated on Sunday. Days are repeated for students to be able to attend on the day most suitable for him/her. Students traveling far can stay over on Friday night for the Saturday class.Dates can change according to the needs of students, but must be negotiated.Further self-study (notional) hours are compulsory for successful completion of the SAQA US Certificates.Because of the intensity and personal nature of this course, only a limited number of students will be accepted for this course.

On successful completion of this course and submission of your Portfolio of Evidence, (including a one-man exhibition) you will receive Competency Certificates equal to 29 credits on the NQF.Students who have already successfully completed the Intensive Photography Course, acquired 20 credits on the NQF for that part-qualification.Experienced students who have completed both these courses can apply for RPL processes to be employed in order to obtain the full qualification: National Certificate: Photography.
