W e have been photographing the wild white horses splashing

through the wild and untamed Camargue for some years now. Photographers and horse-lovers alike just can’t get enough of them and often come back for more.

A professional photographer who joined one of our workshops loved it so much she asked to come back for a custom workshop over a long weekend. She was keen to get something different and asked about a dressage shoot with a Camargue horse. Being the only photography

workshop company based in the Camargue region provides me with strong and well-established links with the local people of the Camargue, offering privileged access to private domain, inaccessible to everyone else. So, I set about making enquiries and found just the person (and horse) to give us that something extra special, ready for the arrival of our pro at the start of the Aigues-Mortes Camargue Festival.

On the practice runs, the single white Camargue stallion, who is trained for festivals and shows, soon got used to his new role of rearing

on the sand dunes at full height and dashing and diving in the sea and surf, galloping out of the waves and onto the beach with his beautiful blond mane blowing in the wind and highlighted by the sun.

With the festival in full fl ow, we started with ‘breakfast’ with the gardians (Camargue cowboys) in the meadow. The French call it a casse-croûte – which is usually bread, saucisson and wine (not a croissant or fruit juice in sight!). Standing in a shallow, muddy, stream with wellies on, the gardians eventually rounded up the bulls and with three gardians fl anking each

PROFILESerge Krouglikoff founded Create Away after an illustrious

career in international fashion photography. Create Away are Camargue specialists and arrange photography workshops and tours to capture the iconic Wild White Horses, Pink Flamingos, Black Bulls, Stunning Landscapes and Classic Portraits. Outside the Camargue, Create Away also offers breathtaking Landscapes of Provence Villages, Lavender & Sunfl ower Fields, Graphic Atlantic Seascapes and now exhilarating Classic Yachts Regattas in Antibes & Saint Tropez on the Cote d’Azur.

bull, they galloped into the medieval town, arriving with a clatter down the narrow cobbled streets – an entrance known as the abrivado.

On arrival the vachette took place, whereby young lads attempted, with all their means, to scare the horses into letting the bull escape into the crowds (with the most sensible staying behind the safety of the barriers). After a day of festivities and bull racing in town, it was time for the bandido (the late afternoon departure) with the process reversed as the cowboys fl anked the bulls once more as they galloped back through town towards the meadow. It’s exhilarating

to capture breathtaking action shots of the horses and bulls as they gallop through the old stone archways of the town with the warm autumn sun setting behind them.

After more wild white horses shoots in different locations in the marsh and on the beach, plus the stallions fi ghting, the highlight for our visiting pro was the single dressage stallion. A new star had been born and is now a staple on our Ultimate Camargue Horses workshops for all to enjoy.

For 2016, we have another exciting new idea that we will be working on this winter – it’s a secret, but think Black Beauty – shhhh!

Stephen Studd from Digital Photography Holidays shares his top tips for shooting into the sun

T hough shooting into the sun can be quite challenging, backlight images can

infuse drama and mystery into your photography. Here are a few of my tips:

KEEP YOUR LENS CLEAN: Dust, grease and scratches increases the risk of getting distracting fl are. If you have a lens-protecting fi lter on, take it off as sunlight can bounce in between the fi lter and the lens.

Shooting into the sun

USE MANUAL MODE: Choose the ISO you want, shoot in Raw and manual focus. Choosing your own aperture and shutter speed gives you control over the desired effect you are after. Underexposing the image will give you dark silhouettes; while overexposing gives detail in the subject and a more dreamy effect.

Finally, be careful. Don’t look into the sun for too long as it can damage your eyes.

Jonathan Chritchley of Ocean Capture walks on a Californian beach in the path of photographic greats

In the footsteps of giants

A s I made my way down the steps to the beach and looked along its silvery shore, I could

feel the percussive power of the Pacifi c Ocean, complaining as her progress was halted by the land on which I stood. Behind me, from the road, I could just hear, over the crashing surf, the sound of heavy V8 motors; huge, chrome-encrusted pick-up trucks, too early and too utilitarian to be tourists. Workers, starting the day early, paper coffee cups in little holders below the dashboard, winding their way along Highway 1, the legendary Pacifi c Coast Highway in the soft, misty light of dawn.

My attention turned back to the beach, its dark triangular rocks and soft light sand, the little sand fl ies darting in and out of bunches of black seaweed washed up during high tide. I couldn’t help but be slightly awestruck; this wasn’t just any beach. This was Garrapata Beach. A name I had been familiar with for years, having

discovered the work of photographer Brett Weston and the photograph he made here in 1954. Brett Weston is from a dynasty that is mentioned in every photography history book worth its salt. Edward Weston, Brett’s father, was born in 1886 and is dubbed ‘one of the most innovative and infl uential American photographers of all time; Brett’s brother Cole Weston,

is another hugely successful landscape photographer and the only man allowed to print his father’s photographs after his death. Their family friend, was ‘uncle’ Ansel, who used to drop into their family home in the mountains right above where I was standing, to drink coffee and discuss the light.

‘Hi Jonathan!’ came a voice behind me, and as I turned the moment just became even more surreal, for there striding along the beach, in a checked cowboy

shirt, jeans and a smile that could light up a darkroom, was Cara Weston, granddaughter of Edward, niece of Brett, daughter of Cole, and herself a very talented photographer.

Last year I had been lucky enough to work with some photographers whose work I had admired for some time. This had a positive effect on my own work and led to me booking a fl ight to the place

that, in my mind at least, had been the epicentre of landscape photography in the last century. A place where

Ansel Adams created some of his most beautiful work, a place where the Weston family live and work to this day. This is the Big Sur, the stunning stretch of Californian coastline south of Carmel and the Monterey Peninsular, where the Santa Lucia mountains rise abruptly from the cold, blue Pacifi c Ocean.

Cara and I talked for hours; about her childhood, growing up around the Weston men, the trips with her father and

“I couldn’t help but be slightly awestruck; this wasn’t just any beach.

This was Garrapata Beach.”

grandfather, about Big Sur and the surrounding area, and about her own work. She suggested that we go back to her studio, in the grounds of the family home high above Garrapata beach and after a death defying drive we arrived, greeted by Cara’s daughters, both of whom have inherited her smile. And I thought to myself, this is a true

W e had reached our fi nal destination at the end of a 15-day tour of

Morocco. Everything had gone our way so far. From the moment we left our fi rst hotel in Rabat we only managed to drive 50 metres before we stopped to capture the beautifully lit town and moody sky. We’d had rainbows over turquoise lakes, a friendly shepherd appearing with her fl ock, fabulous skies in the Sahara… but nothing could have prepared us for what came next.

Essaouira, on the Atlantic coast, has been used for numerous fi lms, most recently Game of Thrones, and it is like a giant fi lm set. A storm had been brewing, so all the blue rowing boats were moored up together for shelter. The tide was high and the sky full of

seagulls, literally thousands of them, agitated by the storm. The waves crashed on the rocks and dark clouds gathered. We set up our tripods and waited for the scene to unravel. And what a scene! The seagulls dive-bombed us, shrieking as they fl ew millimetres away from our cameras.

We stood fast as the sky darkened. We added graduated fi lters to increase the drama in the sky. For a busy scene like this, composition is key. I used the boats to fi ll the foreground and placed the town to the far right of the image to cut out the distraction of people gathered on the walkways. The dark sky balanced the image, giving it an extra dynamic. Finally, I chose not to use my neutral density fi lter to create a smooth sea and blurry clouds. I prefer a more natural look for a scene,

which is already full of energy. When I processed the Raw fi le, I increased the contrast to give the image a gritty feel which I think suits the mood. As there is so much going on, the image looks great as a large print.

The next morning, the clouds had given way to clear skies and the seagulls had settled on the rocks after a hard night. The storm seemed a distant memory and we felt privileged to have witnessed such an epic scene.

Tim Mannakee catches a moody and spectacular scene on the Atlantic coast in Morocco

Michael Pilkington of aspect2i explains why we should continue to use a graduated fi lter

W ith the continuously increasing dynamic range of modern

cameras, why do we need to use a graduated fi lter? The argument is that if we look at the back of the camera at the histogram the whites and

blacks are all in without any clipping. Well, this may be true, but the answer is you still need to use a graduated fi lter.

The reason for this is simply the way in which picture information in the Raw fi le is stored. Much more space is

given over to the whites and highlights than the blacks and shadows. In fact, the brightest stop occupies half of the storage. The next brightest stop occupies a quarter, the brightest stop after that occupies an eighth and so on. So our blacks

Why use a graduated fi lter?

and shadow details are given very little space to record the different tones that we want to pull out during post-processing and printing. Furthermore, we fi ght to keep the whites and highlights in check.

In this image (Figure 1), taken without a graduated fi lter, we see a clear peak on the right of the histogram, which is the sky. Using a graduated fi lter, this peak is completely fl attened and the whole histogram has moved to the left (Figure 2). This gives us the opportunity to increase the exposure and move the whole histogram to the right.

You will have heard of ETTR or ‘exposing to the right’ and this is the reason why. We are able to move the blacks and shadows to the right of the histogram, thereby giving them more space to record different tones.

Of course, the image on the screen on the back of your camera looks overexposed (Figure 3), but it is not – as no whites or highlights have been clipped. This is the biggest hurdle for most people. They want the image on the back of the camera to look great, whereas I want the image after post-processing to look great!

Figure 3: on-screen view looks overexposed, but the image will be fi ne

O ne of the questions I get asked more than any is ‘what is your favourite season?’

Whilst I love every season, there’s something really special about shooting in the winter months. The Lake District usually gets a covering of snow, especially on the tops of the slopes. With a few simple steps, photography in cold conditions can be safe, rewarding and great fun.

SELF-PREPARATIONWith low temperatures, keeping warm is vital. Modern clothing allows layering with fabrics such as merino wool. Add a fl eece or down jacket and a waterproof layer and you should keep your body warm and dry. A hat and gloves are essential to keep your extremities warm, too. Boots should be waterproof and have plenty of grip on the snow. As an added safeguard, walking

aids such as studs or better still, decent spikes should keep you upright in all but the steepest conditions. If you are going high up steep mountains in the snow, crampons and an ice axe are the best choice. But remember, walking aids don’t keep you safe; you still have to concentrate.

With the shorter days, you should carry a headtorch and some food, such as energy bars. Always keep a change of

Preparing to shoot in freezing weather? John Gravett of Lakeland Photographic Holidays outlines some simple steps to stay safe

clothing, including socks and shoes in your car to change into if you have got cold or wet.

EQUIPMENTAs you are likely to be carrying more outdoor kit, clothing and food than normal, I’d recommend trimming your camera kit down if you are covering any distance on foot. I often carry just one body, a couple of lenses, tripod and fi lters. Long-range zooms save you having to change lenses too often with cold hands, so carry a 18–200mm on a DX camera, a 29–300mm on an FX body. That leaves room in your bag for clothing you can shed when getting warm walking uphill.

One important thing – batteries don’t last as long in low temperatures, so make sure you take plenty of spares. With a regular DSLR, I’d usually have a couple of spares; if you use live-view frequently, or a mirrorless camera, you’ll need more. Batteries that give up when you have the best light of the day is one thing you really don’t need!

TECHNIQUESIf it’s snowy, the whole landscape is white and will typically lead to underexposed images as the camera meter will see everything as grey. The most important piece of advice is to watch your histogram!

This is particularly true when shooting light-coloured subjects. Expose to the right – make sure the histogram ends as far right as possible, without blowing highlight detail. Often on snowy scenes, this will need 1–2 extra stops of exposure compensation (+1.0–+2.0).

A blue sky can be enhanced with a polarising fi lter, grey skies might benefi t from a graduated fi lter. If the sun is shining on the snow, it might be brighter than the sky, and a grad positioned upside-down to subdue the snow may work to your advantage.

With a covering of snow on the ground, there might not

be as much foreground interest as in other seasons, try low viewpoints to bring out the texture of windblown snow. Keep a lookout for fences, stones protruding through the snow or similar. In really

heavy snowfalls, sheep huddling together sheltering make a strong image. If it gets really cold, frozen lakes can look striking.

Make the most of the conditions, take the necessary

precautions and enjoy the snowy weather, especially if you can get to somewhere beautiful like the Lake District. Make the most of it.

T here are a number of key points for all aspiring landscape photographers

to remember when out in the fi eld. Here are a few of my tips:Be aware of the light: A photographer must be acutely aware of the nature and quality of light, and how the light is falling on the subject. Light is everything!

For fl are-free shots, do not assume that the lens hood will cover it. Use your hand, a piece of card or, better still, a friend standing alongside to keep unwanted light from your lens.High dynamic range (HDR): To use HDR, ensure you are familiar with natural lighting ratios and how certain surfaces absorb and refl ect

landscape

light. Don’t underestimate the human eye and brain’s ability to detect where these ratios are skewed, such as with too much light in a shadow. The sky’s the limit: If the sky is too bland, too blue or too grey, try leaving it out. If the sky is a good background, let it stay. Squint to evaluate the brightness range: the best way to see whether it is too great for the capacity of the sensor or fi lm to handle. Try devoting three-quarters of the image to the sky if it is remarkable. Include whole clouds if possible. With refl ections too, try to include entire clouds. It’s a matter of time: Try not to photograph expansive views in the middle of the day. Early light, offering long shadows, is preferable. Late evening just after the sun has set, the ‘afterglow’, can also produce a lovely, luminous light.

T he sea conjures an elemental dynamic that, in my view, sets seascapes apart

from the generalised category of landscape photography. For from tempestuous lashings to lapping caresses, the sea’s expressive fl uidity is uniquely demanding when successfully interpreting its ever-changing moods. In the viewfi nder its textures and refl ections constantly evolve. Yet show patience; study and respect

the sea’s predictable unpredictability. Get your approach, settings and timing right and you can refl ect the scene’s emotion and start ‘catching waves’.

Seascapes are governed by two fundamental truths. The fi rst; compared to land mass, a large refl ective body of water will see scudding clouds mopping-up more light, while dawn and dusk levels will rise and fall exponentially. In time, an inner sense tells you when

the light is just right, to freeze a wave, catch swirling motion or add ethereal ghosting. The second; accept that the tides will constantly movethe goalposts and seascapes become an exciting photographic adventure.

A rolling breaker can add a cornerstone to your composition, yet its foaming wake will send your metering see-sawing. You must watch closely and balance the action. Consider ND fi lters to gain a

PROFILEChris Simmons has been fascinated by photography since childhood. After developing his camera and darkroom skills in college, he moved to London and a career in advertising as

an art director. He also travelled widely around the UK and abroad, building a body of ‘vista’ seascape work in remote coastal locations. In 2011, Chris won the ‘Cornish Point of View’ award, then held his fi rst exhibition and launched a dedicated website in 2012. In 2013, he moved to Cornwall to live the dream and extend his photographic work.W: c-simmonsworkshops.co.ukE: [email protected]

slightly longer exposure and instil foreground motion. Mid-ground focusing and a tighter f-stop will retain detail in the following wave ranks. Maybe even punctuate with bounced second-curtain fl ash to bring the crest to a sparkling full stop. These are just a few options from a whole range of techniques.

For me, the sea engenders a tremendous spirit of freedom that inspires me to constantly evolve my award-winning photographic approach. That’s why I moved to Crantock on Cornwall’s magnifi cent

Atlantic coast. From here I offer one-to-one, B&B workshops to DSLR photographers of all levels who want to hone their seascape skills on some of the UK’s fi nest

coastline. You will learn to use and rely on manual settings and capture images ‘in camera’ with refi nement of Raw fi les through considered use of Photoshop post-production.

P reparation is key to getting the best shots and that starts before you even leave home.

Firstly, make sure you travel with the right equipment. For wildlife photography you are going to need a long lens. I’d

suggest a minimum of 200mm, but 400mm or more will get you much closer to the action. It’s not all about the animals, though. Pack a wideangle lens too; it should be something in the region of 18–22mm, so you don’t miss out on those

spectacular landscapes.Having got your equipment in place, make sure you are familiar with your camera and its operation before you leave. There’s nothing worse than missing out on that magical shot because you are fumbling

Mike Peters, who works part-time with the African Conservation Experience (ACE), gives some advice on getting ready for a wildlife adventure

Preparing for a wildlife adventure

with the controls, trying to fi nd the right setting.

Pin-sharp images require a fast shutter speed and steady hands. Whilst fast shutter speeds are not usually too much of a problem in the bright African sun, holding

your camera rock steady with a long lens can be diffi cult, especially in situations where a tripod is impractical.

That is where the humble bean bag can come to the rescue, allowing you to support your long lens on

vehicle door frames, convenient rocks or even on tree branches. If you are worried about carrying a heavy bean bag in your luggage, you can always fi ll an empty bag with beans or rice when you get there.

TOP TIPS1. Be well prepared for your trip.2. Know your equipment and how to use it.3. Find a way to support your equipment, especially when using fast shutter speeds or long lenses. Improvise if necessary.4. Trust local knowledge about where to get the best shots.5. Be patient! Observing or tracking wildlife takes time. You may need to return to the same place a number of times to get the shots you want.6. Get close to the action by using a long lens. However, a wideangle lens gives a better sense of habitat and you can shoot spectacular landscapes.7. Get down low with your camera. Try and get an eye level perspective or get down lower if you can for more impact.8. Enjoy the moment, stay safe and have fun.

best shots and that starts before you even leave home.”

You’ll need to rely on local knowledge of the wildlife to get you the best shots possible. Travellers with African Conservation Experience (ACE), the organisation that I work for part-time, have placements at professional

wildlife conservation projects. Spending all day tracking and observing wildlife, equipped with monitoring equipment and accompanied by experienced researchers with a wealth of knowledge of wildlife behaviour gives them amazing

opportunities for close-up wildlife encounters.

Finally, remain safe – and remember occasionally to put down your equipment and enjoy the scenery and wildlife for what it is rather seeing it only through a camera lens.

Highlights include fi ve species of penguins, two-thirds of the world’s black-browed albatrosses and a variety of raptures, pond, song and seabirds. The mammals are also impressive with sea lions, elephant seals, dolphins and whales.

Experience the Falklands at your own pace, with stunning seascapes and landscapes, along with seclusion, accessible close-up wildlife with an unwary demeanour, in a natural untouched environment.

J ulia Margaret Cameron had a huge influence on studio portrait photographers. Her

shallow depth of field style, with an emphasis on capturing emotion as opposed to the technical perfection of capturing a likeness, influenced generations of photographers.

Photographers wanted more than to simply reproduce a likeness; they wanted their portraits to signify the psyche of their sitter, to reveal the individual’s character and essential nature. Now 150 years later we might think this to be audacious, to say the least, but for many generations this was the aspiration of the serious portrait photographer.

The studio portrait photographer, as opposed to the environmental portrait photographer, tended to concentrate their lens on the face (or waist-up portraits) against a plain background of white, grey or black. For many years north daylight was the preferred light source with artificial light gaining in popularity last century and flash becoming increasingly

popular from the 1960s.For the viewer the only

‘clues’ to the sitter’s inner identity are found through the sitter’s expression and gestures. The exemplars of this tradition would be Karsh of Ottawa, Irving Penn and Richard Avedon. Penn and Avedon in particular stripped back everything to simple lighting and plain grey or white backgrounds. This minimal approach to studio portraiture influenced another generation of portrait photographers.

The current pre-eminent studio portrait photographer is Nadav Kander. Where Cameron used long exposures (because of Victorian technical limitations) combined with shallow depth of field to create her signature style, Kander also uses long exposures but combined with flash to create his signature style. This creates a blur-flash image. That is, the blur part of the image is made by the long exposure under continuous lighting combined with an instant of flash to freeze the subject. Kander neatly

Photofusion’s Paul Ellis looks at how the method of portraiture has changed through the years.

completes the circle, returning to a style of studio portraiture that can trace its roots and influences back to Julia Margaret Cameron.

This year at Photofusion we will be exploring styles of portraiture in a series of workshops held in our studios and darkrooms in Brixton, London. The first workshop, ‘In Search of Julia Margaret Cameron’, takes place over the weekend of 27–28 February 2016, and will include the opportunity to study and work in her manner, both in the studio and in the darkroom where we will be making albumen prints. Other workshops will look at the work of Paul Strand (to coincide with the much anticipated exhibition at the V&A) and Irving Penn.

T here are many pleasures in running workshops. One of the greatest is

introducing clients to our favourite places. Local knowledge is so important, enabling us to understand how angles of light and other variables, such as tide and weather, will affect a particular landscape. This means we get you there at the right moment. All of our workshops are in places where one of us has actually lived. Clients are often amazed to discover exciting locations almost on their doorstep, and we make sure they know how to fi nd them again, should they want to return on their own.

We do not make our own images while leading tours, so we can concentrate on our clients, but seeing them discover favourite places is enough reward. Prioritising lesser-known locations means there is no jostling with other photographers for space. Other landscapes may draw the crowds, but photographers overlook their local area at their cost and, who knows, there is even a chance you might bring home an image

F rom the very start of my photography career, it became clear that regular

photography workshops and tours did not work for me. I felt uncomfortable with large groups of photographers – sardined into minivans turning up at over-popular locations. So although I tended to work alone, I was keen to share my experiences in remote locations with smaller, dedicated groups.

To take others with me on location, I needed means of getting there that was safe, but also an adventure for those taking part. This didn’t seem possible until I gathered together the right team of Arctic sailors, dog mushers, kayakers and photographers.

Vertical Shot Expeditions was born out of the need to run photography expeditions the way we all feel they should be run – full of interest and adventure, and at great locations where you can shoot undisturbed.

On our trips, we don’t take more than six photographers on an expedition with us. We also don’t drive packed minivans. Instead we sail on yachts, mush dog sleds, cross ice-caps, paddle kayaks and trek to some of the world’s most amazing remote locations.

Our photography is driven forward by the same thing that has always driven humans to remote landscapes: exploration. We hope you can join us.

P hotography and travel go hand in hand and, for a photographer, little

can beat the excitement of going on a trip – cameras, lenses and a multitude of accessories packed with great care and anticipation. Arriving at the new destination the eye seems to adapt and become revitalised. Everything is new and we are ready for anything.

On one trip we arrived in Death Valley, Nevada, with the sun rapidly descending towards the horizon. We found images were being created everywhere and changing constantly. It was exhilarating and yet, it was only after a few

deep breaths and with cameras ready did we begin to really see what was around us.

We returned home having witnessed wonderful sights, but also came to realise there is much everyday that we do not see. We started to appreciate what is right here, in our own backyards. We discovered that great images were to be had in the garden, in nearby cityscapes and landscapes, and suddenly, as if for the fi rst time, we were ‘seeing’ with fresh eyes.

That was many years ago. And ‘seeing’ is a very important lesson has become the core philosophy of World Photo Adventure’s approach to our

Gary Groucutt from Lightscapes Photography encourages the use of a long lens for landscape shots

L andscape photography doesn’t always have to be with a super wideangle lens. It’s not

always necessary to show your admiring viewer the whole world! With a longer lens you can give your interpretation of the scene in front of you.

So, why not just reach for the long lens? This lens can be anything from 50mm to upwards of 300mm. With a long lens the world becomes compressed in your viewfi nder.

Life through a long lens is very liberating. You can work low down or high up – but you

generally just have to position yourself further back to frame up what you want. Over the tops of trees with a far-off vista can work perfectly; the distant horizon is brought forward so it’s right in front of you. This makes abstract framing so much easier too: buildings trees, refl ections can all become fi ne art masterpieces.

It can only get a little tricky when you want to produce a wider shot using a 50mm lens. If you shoot portrait and set the tripod level, it’s possible to make images like a vertical panoramic, but just using three

or four images. By going lower and further away from your intended subject you can then produce your shots.

Once back in the studio, stitch them together to create a perfect wideangle image, but with a 50mm lens. The beauty here is that the foreground has masses of detail and the horizon is middle distance. This makes it much easier to see and it is revealed with stunning clarity. So, give long lenses a go. I guarantee you’ll be hooked. Here’s a few pointers to remember when shooting with long lenses:

Long lens landscape photography

ERADICATE SOFT IMAGES: Make sure you have a fast shutter speed if hand holding, get into the habit of turning the ISO up to 500, 640 or even 800 sometimes. Increasing the sensitivity of the sensor will automatically help you too.TRIPOD: Use a tripod where you can to be sure of no blurred/soft images. Get the camera locked down and level the tripod.THE CLASSIC 50MM: Use a 50mm lens instead of a super wideangle; go further back to frame up your closer foreground detail.TRAIN YOUR EYES: Practice – go out as often as you can shooting abstract images, distilling what’s in front of you and removing as much as possible in the frame. How minimal can you go? You will soon start seeing the world in a very different way.COMPRESSION: Flatten all those hills and dales! Go higher for the big country shots. Get above the trees, preferably on a slight incline or hill and squash all the detail into the image. The land and sky will look superb.

the total images taken are actually printed. I believe that to realise the full potential of an image, it needs to be printed. Printing is the only way that a photographer can be sure that the colour rendition of the image is to their specifi cation and not left

to the vagaries of the viewer’s individual screen.

At its simplest, a digital workfl ow will take you from import, through cataloguing and indexing. Then you can move into development via the same software or additional software or plugins. Finally,

you get to the export and printing stage. Digital printing can seem complex but with a few simple rules and a little knowledge of ICC profi les and the printing dialog box you will soon have prints that you can be proud of. I see this as little different from an analogue workfl ow – the import process is the same as the development of the fi lm and indexing/fi ling of the negatives, then the software development and output is similar to the printing of an image in the darkroom.

As with most things in life, the aim is to keep it as simple as possible; with all the options it is easy to over-complicate the process. But by mimicking your analogue fl ow then it really is possible to create a simple, effective and easy-to-use digital workfl ow.
