Photoshop Pop Art Selfie Pop art was an art movement that began in the 1950’s and used the designs of daily life with all of the bright colors and patterns found in thing like cartoons, comics and advertisements. Andy Warhol was one of the best known pop artists who lived from 1928 – 1987. You will use a photo of yourself to create an image that is similar to Andy Warhol’s style of art. Step 1: Open up Photoshop. Go to the bottom of the screen and click on the start button Step 2: Click on “All Programs” and scroll down to find “Adobe Design and Web Premium CS6” Adobe Photoshop CS6 will be listed at the bottom in that folder. Step 3: Once Photoshop opens, go to the top menu and select “Open.”

In the window that opens find and click on you photograph. Step 4: Once your photograph is on the screen, look down at the bottom right side of the screen for a half black-half white circle. In the menus that pops up, select the THRESHOLD application. This will make a new layer that flips the image to black and white like a coloring book.

Step 5: When you click on threshold you image will go black and white as if it went through a photocopy machine. You can adjust the look of the image by adjusting the slider on the histogram graph that also pops up. NOTE: This threshold setting is not perfect and you may not get the right balance of black and white right away… stick with the process and keep reading these instructions to see how to improve your image. FOR NOW, you want to adjust so that the eyes/nose areas look okay. Step 6: In the bottom right side of the screen you will notice that a there is a list of layers that you are working on. Click on the BACKGROUND layer that shows the color image of your face. Repeat STEP 5 and click on the threshold circle again. This time, adjust the black/white slider to make your hair show up. If you are like me and have dark hair this can look really crazy! Step 7: On the left side of the screen are your regular drawing/creating tools. Find the ERASER tool and click in the photo to erase the areas that are too different and bring back the eyes and nose adjustment you made before. NOTE: You can change the size of the eraser by right clicking on the image. You can adjust the slider to make the brush bigger or smaller.

Step 8: You should repeat the threshold and erasing process until you are happy with the image. It should have enough details to see most of the face (eyes, nose, mouth), hair texture, and clothing. Try to avoid having any major area so blacked out or so bright-white that you can’t color it in. (This may take a few layers… you can see that mine has 6 threshold layers because of my dark glasses and hair.) Step 9: Now we get to the fun part!!! in the image! Click the mouse on the very top layer, threshold 1. Then, at the bottom corner find and click on the icon that looks like a paper with a folded corner. This will make a NEW LAYER above threshold 1. Step 10: For LAYER 1 to color properly we need to click on the drop down menu in the layers box. Change the setting to MULTIPLY.

Step 11: Click on the paintbrush tool from the left side of the screen. Don’t forget that you can change the size of your brugh just like you did with the eraser! Step 12: At the bottom left you will find the color patches. Click on the top color patch and select to color that you’d like to use as you paint. Once you selected a color, go ahead and paint in the section that gets that color. You should notice the the color seems to slip behind the black outlines. Step 13: I prefer to use a new layer (set to “multiply”) for each different color that I will use so that I can keep track of what areas I am working on and can fix things (if I need to) much easier. Step 14: Color all the rest of your image. This includes the backround. (My background is cluttered and not blank so I have a lot more work to do!)

Step 15: Now we need to save this image flattened so that it doesn’t have all of the different layers. Go to FILE> SAVE AS> FILE TYPE=jpeg . Next you must give your file a name that makes sense and helps you find your work easily. In this class we follow this format: last name, first name) Pop Art Selfie.

Please type that here in the file name space.

Step 16: Photoshop will ask you about comression and you should set that to the HIGHEST setting (12). Step 17:

Once you have your image saved as JPEG. Go up to the menu bar and select IMAGE> CANVAS SIZE. in the window that pops open we need the following settings:

Width = 100 PERCENT Height = 100 PERCENT Be sure that the anchor is in the TOP LEFT corner Make sure that the canvas color is WHITE

When you make these setting corrections your image should look like this: Step 18: Find and click on the RECTANGULAR MARQUEE tool on the left side of the screen. Use the mouse to click and drag a dotted-line box around your photo. Step 19: Once you have a dotted-line box, press CTRL+C on your keyboard to copy the image. Step 20: Press CTRL+V three times to paste three copies of your image on the “paper.” They all paste on top of each other but you can tell if you did this right by looking at the layers info at the bottom right corner of your screen. Step 21: Find the MOVE tool on the left side of the screen. Use this tool to move that different copies to the four corners of the paper. NOTE: you will have to select each new layer each time.

Step 22: One more last bit of fun! You get to shift the colors and make them CRAZY… IMAGE> ADJUSTMENTS> HUE/SATURATION (or you can just type CTRL+U)

For each of your 4 images you can mess around with the hue (color) slider and the saturation (brightness/intensity) slider and it will shift all of the colors in your layer so that they look like Pop Art!
