Photosynthesis Notes for HS BiologyTRANSCRIPT
Photosynthesis
Uses light energy to make food (glucose) in plants
Equation for Photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O + Sunlight C6H12O6 + 6O2
Carbon dioxide + water + sunlight glucose + oxygen
• Occurs in green leaves
-The leaves have cells that contain Chloroplasts
-Chloroplasts contain a green pigment called chlorophyll
Chlorophyll has the ability to change light energy into chemical bond energy
Chlorophyll absorbs red and blue light and reflects green light.
chloroplast
Chlorophyll – pigment in chloroplasts
• Two types: chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b
• Absorb red and blue light
• Reflect Green light
• Having both a & b enable plants to absorb light from a wider region of the spectrum
• What color light would be best for plants to grow in?
Red & Blue
Photosynthesis only occurs in the light.
Provides most of the oxygen in our atmosphere.
The rate of photosynthesis depends on:
Temperature ( ENZYMES)
Light Intensity
Amount of CO2 available
Amount of Water available
Photosynthesis is the opposite of cellular respiration
• Photosynthesis• Occurs in
Chloroplasts• Energy Storage• Uses: CO2 + H2O +
light energy• Makes: C6H12O6
(glucose) + O2
• Aerobic Respiration• Occurs in
Mitochondria• Energy Release• Uses: C6H12O6
(glucose) + O2
• Makes: CO2 + H2O+ chemical energy (ATP)
