PhotosynthesisWhat we know - • Producers are organisms

that produce their own food. • Green plants are producers –

they convert sunlight into energy (food).

IN YOUR NOTEBOOK

list some green plants.

Are green plants only located on land?

List some green plants that are found under water.

Do they carry out photosynthesis?

Radiant Energy

Photosynthesis

What we are learning today- • Photosynthesis is a chemical

reaction, where radiant energy from the sun reacts with water and carbon dioxide to form chemical energy.

• Radiant Energy is required for the chemical process to take place.

• Carbon dioxide and water are the “ingredients” for photosynthesis, and sugar (glucose) is formed, along with oxygen.

• The plants use these products (glucose and Oxygen) to produce food and energy or will store them for later use.

Photosynthesis

• A process that requires carbon dioxide (CO2) and uses Radiant (Light) energy and water (H2O) to produce organic (glucose).

In your notebook draw the leaf

Use the formula to explain the Process of photosynthesis

Label what goes in and what comes out of the leaf What is the leaf making? Will the leaf use the product immediately or will it be used later?

Where does this all happen?

• To answer this first you must think – Which part of the plant is usually green?

• How does Carbon dioxide and water get into that plant part?

• How does Radiant energy get captured?

Questions:

• How does Radiant energy get captured by the leaf?

• Where does photosynthesis take place?

Chloroplast• Organelle (or a pocket) where photosynthesis

takes place.• Contains Chlorophyll

Question:

• Why are plants green?

Page 14: PHOTOSYNTHESIS. Photosynthesis What we know - Producers are organisms that produce their own food. Green plants are producers – they convert sunlight

Chlorophyll Molecules

• Chlorophyll pigments (COLOR) absorb energy (photons) by absorbing certain wavelengths (blue-420 nm and red-660 nm are most important).

• Plants are green because the green wavelength is reflected, not absorbed.
