Quality and SafetyNew Mobility ProtocolStarting back in February 2016, you may have noticed that all activity orders for your patients are defaulted to “time limited bedrest” or “Progressive Mobility Protocol (PMP)”. It is our standard practice to assess and re-assess mobility every 8 hours. Nurses are now empowered to proactively advance our patients safely from bedrest, to dangle, to chair, to walk with assist and back to full independence. The PMP is our way of preventing complications of immobility, improve respiration and speed rehabilitation proactively. To learn more, please contact Heather Way, Nurse Clinician at 810.262.6237.
Medical Dictation App for iPhone® and Android Mobile Digital DevicesHurley is now using the M*Modal dictation/transcription platform. The M*Modal Fluency Flex™ Mobile app will allow you to quickly and accurately record clinical notes during patient encounters for easy integration with electronic health record systems (EHRs), increasing productivity and documentation quality.
In addition, the app provides a secure platform that ensures patient information remains private. This flexible dictation platform provides the mobility and freedom that you need and will appreciate.
M*Modal developed this new mobile app with you in mind, delivering accurate, high-quality medical transcription with the convenience of anytime, anywhere dictation. Healthcare providers can streamline the clinical documentation process by using devices they already carry with them.
It is a free App and there is no cost associated with using this product. If you are interested in getting set up so you can dictate from your cell phone or tablet, please contact Sue Johnson at 262-9456.

Meet Hurley’s New Joint Replacement Navigator
Tana Brandt Joint Replacement Navigator
I graduated with my Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Saginaw Valley State University and spent several years working in inner city Detroit hospitals as a staff RN on Acute care for the Elderly units where I specialized in care for medical and surgical patients 65 years and older. While working with the elderly population I became skilled in identifying
acute clinical issues, as well as psychosocial and financial barriers unique to that population. I then relocated back to the Flint area where I worked in Utilization Management prior to accepting the role as Joint Nurse Navigator here at Hurley. I’m beyond excited to develop this role and provide a seamless surgical process for the CJR patients. I will provide the CJR patients with single point of contact for any questions and concerns as the go through the pre-surgical process, during their admission, and post discharge.
Hurley Selected to Participate in Medicare’s Bundled Payment Program for Joint ReplacementThe Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement Model (CJR) was created by Medicare in an effort to create more efficient and standardized care for Medicare patients undergoing hip and knee replacements. Hip and knee replacements are the most common inpatient surgery for Medicare beneficiaries and at this time the cost to Medicare for the surgery, hospitalization, and recovery varies greatly amongst providers and geographic areas. The CJR Model went into effect April 1, 2016 for hospitals in 67 geographic locations and spans a period of five years. CMS has defined an episode of care for hip and joint replacement patients in the CJR program as beginning with the date of admission and spanning all care (inpatient and outpatient) until 90 days post discharge. Medicare has provided each hospital with a target episode price to achieve and at the end of each year the hospital’s total episode spending will be compared to that target price. Depending on the hospital’s quality and episode cost they may either receive a refund from Medicare or be required to repay Medicare for services. The ultimate goal of the program is for hospitals, physicians and post-acute care providers (outpatient physical therapy, home care, SNF, etc.) to collaborate and provide each patient with the most efficient utilization of resources possible.
