Physics

Period 1

2/17/12

Physicists investigate the world around them and use their knowledge to innovate and to

understand how things work. Physicists have different types of career options, which can be from

medicine to education to rocket science. They use their skills to investigate, understand, and

innovate, to make a difference in their community. One of the many things that physicists do is

investigate solar neutrinos deep underground and create innovative ways to diagnose and treat

cancer in hospitals. They work with the government to guide agencies on the scientific principles

behind policies and develop new devices to create "green energy" in the planet.

Physicists with a bachelor’s degree are most likely to be employed in the private, science,

math, technology or engineering areas. However, some physicists with a bachelor’s degree have

become writers, educators, actuaries, attorneys or have started their own companies. About 40%

of all bachelor’s degree receivers enter the workforce immediately after graduation, and 35%

after completing their bachelor’s degree have many varieties of starting salaries. They start as

low as $40,000 to $65,000 a year, depending on their field. In addition, Kate McAlpine's is a

writer that graduated from Michigan State University, with a physics bachelor’s degree,

who writes articles for the New Scientist magazine. She writes about the progress of an

experiment and about a recent advance. One of her job skills is that she needs to know the

knowledge of physics principles and communication. McAlpine works for the government,

agencies and laboratories.

There are many of employers that offer many positions to a physicist that requires a

physics degree. One of them is NASA, located in Washington D.C. A position that NASA offers

is atmospheric science. One way to begin a career in atmospheric science is to earn a bachelor’s

degree in meteorology, physics, chemistry, geography, mathematics, or computer science. An

employee might use physics in this employment position by using cloud physics, which is the

formation and evolution of clouds and precipitation, and the atmospheric physics which is the

study of processes such as heating and cooling of the atmosphere. Also they use data analysis

and examine the chemical and physical processes that occur in the atmosphere. This position also

requires experience in physics as well as others, such as laboratory techniques. They write papers

and technical reports detailing the results of their research and may even work in groups with

other physicists, aerospace engineers, photographers, science writers, data systems analysts,

astronauts, and biologists. Last, atmospheric scientists may also work for private weather

services, state governments, universities, and aircraft and instrument manufacturing companies.

Many universities around the country offer a physics degree. The University of

California, Berkeley offers a physics major program. However, there are some requirements to

accomplish, in order to major in physics. Students may declare a physics major after completing

Physics 7A-7C or H7A-H7C, Math 1A-1B, Math 53 and Math 54 with a requirement of a

minimum 2.0 GPA. One requirement that is needed is to take six units, which are Analytic

Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics, Electromagnetism, Optics, The Modern Physics and Advanced

Electrical Laboratory, Statistical and Thermal Physics, and a physics elective that can be taken

whenever the student chooses. Also, math is to be taken the first two years, freshman and

sophomore year. Last, the physics major is considered to be a challenging program. It is

recommended to students that they ask for assistance.

To finalize, a physicist is someone who investigates the world around them and uses their

knowledge to innovate and make a difference in the community. With a physics bachelor degree

doesn’t mean that you have to become a scientist, there are many positions in which you can

work on such as Kate McAlpine, a writer for the New Scientist newspaper, or an actuary as well

as many others. Besides NASA, there are many other employers around the country, which

require physics bachelor degree. The career of an atmospheric scientist, is one of the careers

that I might be interested in because I would like to work for NASA and get to use physics as

many other skills as my job.
