Abstract:

A report of Physico-chemical and microbial study of the water samples taken from

certain water sources and industrial wastewater samples in Dehradun, India is presented

here. Water samples are subjected to physico- chemical analysis like pH, total dissolved

solids, hardness, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand,

alkalinity, sulphate and chloride were carried out. The microbiological examination for

different water sources and industrial wastewater samples was also performed. Some

heavy metals such as Cu2+, Co2+, Fe3+ and Mn2+ were determined in fresh water, while

some other metals such as Zn2+, Cr6+, Co2+ and Ni2+ were determined in industrial

wastewater. Physico-chemical analysis showed that all measured parameters were found

within the limitation that may be either national or international law, except some

samples which showed higher values than the permissible limits for some measured

parameters. The Microbiological analysis determined the presence of bacteria, fungi and

yeast. Most of the bacterial isolates were short rod, spore formers as well as coccoidal in

shape. The efficiency of water treatment process on the reduction of microbial load was

also calculated. Regarding the pathogenic bacteria, data showed that neither water

samples nor industrial wastewater samples contain pathogens when using cultivation

media for the samples examination. Further more data proved the possibility of recycling

of the tested industrial wastewater on which some microorganisms can grow. Data also

showed that the percentage of heavy metals removed may reach to more than 72% in

some cases as a result of bacterial treatment of industrial wastewater.
