The centre of curvature, C of a curved mirror is a centre of a sphere that forms the mirror.
✓ P has a smaller surface of curvature
✓ Q has a bigger surface of curvature
✓ For P, the reflected light rays meet at a point further from the mirror. Therefore, it has a
bigger focal length
✓ For Q, the reflected light rays meet at a point nearer the mirror. Therefore, it has a smaller
focal length
✓ If the curvature of the mirror increases, the focal length of a mirror decreases
(ii) The image is real, inverted and diminished
(ii) The image is virtual, upright and diminished
✓ The two plane mirror are placed at the two ends of the long carboard tube
✓ The two mirrors are placed inclined at 45° to the horizontal plane as shown in Diagram
below:
The image are not clear because:
✓ Multiple reflections can occur in a mirror and this causes the superposition of images
✓ A mirror will not reflect all the light energy that falls on it
✓ To produce clearer images – replace the plane mirrors with two glass prisms
✓ There are no multiple reflections in a glass prism
✓ all the light energy is reflected by total internal reflection
✓ To produce bigger images – place a convex lens to act as a magnifier in front of the prism
