    PHYSICS LABORATORY SAFETY PROCEDURES

    1. NOTE THE LOCATION OF SAFETY EQUIPMENT DESCRIBED BELOW:A. Emergency Exit Routes: There are signs on or above each door that can

    be used as an exit route during an emergency.

    B. Fire Extinguisher: Pull safety pin out, point house at base of fire, squeezehandle.C. Eyewash Station: Should any substance be splashed in your eyes, wash

    them thoroughly. Bend so that eyes are over the spigots, force eyes wideopen then push metal plate or remove plastic caps to start water flow.

    D. First Aid Kit: Minor injuries such as small cuts can be treated effectivelyin the lab. Open the first aid kit to determine its contents and use as

    appropriate. REPORT ANY INJURY TO YOUR INSTRUCTOR.E. Emergency Telephone: The phone in the prep area may be used to call for

    911 emergency services. You must dial 9 to get an outside line;

    therefore you need to dial 9-911. If the prep area phone is unavailable,

    you may consider using the next nearest telephone or cell phone.

    2. DO NOT eat, drink, smoke, store food, or apply cosmetics in the laboratory.3. DRESS: Restrain long hair, loose clothing and dangling jewelry. Closed-toed

    shoes are the ONLY appropriate footwear for a laboratory. DO NOT wearsandals, flip-flops or other open-toed footwear. STUDENTS WILL NOT BE

    ALLOWED TO REMAIN IN LAB IF WEARING OPEN-TOED SHOES!

    4. MEDICAL RISK: Inform the instructor if you are pregnant, takingimmunosuppressive medicines, or have any medical condition that might requirespecial precautions in the lab (such as medications that would influence your

    response or reflex time). Under no circumstances should you attend a lab sessionwhile under the influence of any chemical substance.

    5. HEATING APPARATUS: NEVER leave any heat source unattended. Handlehot equipment with tongs, safety gloves and other appropriate aids NEVER

    BARE HANDS!

    6. AVOID SPILLS: Place liquids toward the center of the work area, away from theedges. Clean up any spills as soon as they occur.

    7. BROKEN GLASS: Do not handle broken glassware with bare hands. Discusswith your instructor what was broken and where to discard it. Dispose of all

    cracked or broken glassware in an appropriate container NOT the regular trash.

    8. ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT: Some experiments will require electric circuits tobe connected to a power supply (instead of a battery). In these cases, under NO

    circumstances are electric circuit connections to be touched while the power

    supply is on. If a connection needs to be adjusted, TURN THE POWERSUPPLY OFF BEFORE MAKING ADJUSTMENTS!

    9. INCIDENT REPORT: Report all spills, accidents, strange occurrences, or othersafety incidents PROMPTLY to the instructor.

    10.PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT is expected to avoid creating dangerous situations.Do NOT perform unauthorized experiments, touch or handle laboratoryequipment without your instructors approval, work in the lab without faculty-

    approved supervision, or carry out practical jokes or pranks. If you have any

    questions concerning the safety of a procedure, consult with your instructor.

    11.LABORATORY DOORS: All laboratory doors must be closed in accordancewith local fire safety codes. If you leave during a designated break time, informyour instructor who can then designate someone to open the door at your knock

    when you return.

    12.EYE PROTECTION is required to be worn any time projectile objects are beingused in the laboratory. Impact resistant safety glasses are provided for each

    student in the laboratory during exercises that involve the use of projectiles.
