    October 2015

    Dear Physics Alumni,

I hope this letter finds you happy and healthy. I see from your responses that, at least, you are very busy! It’s great to hear from you. We’ve been busy too.

We’ve been bursting with students around here. The average number of physics majors in the past 5 years, 18+/-1, has almost doubled from the 5 years before that. We would love to take credit but it seems to be a nationwide trend. Still our number stacks up well to our 18 college comparison group average of only 12+/-1. If anything it looks like our numbers will rise. Professor Schramm’s Math Methods course has 25 students enrolled for this fall! 50 students, or roughly 10% of the incoming class, registered for the first course of our major sequence! We could not be more delighted.

George Schmiedeshoff continues his National Science Foundation (NSF) funded study of quantum phase transitions using thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements on novel metals containing f-electrons such as YbAgGe. The measurements are made in his on-campus laboratory in the Hameetman Science Center and in the labs of his collaborators at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Ames National Laboratory, and the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. Oxy students have participated in most of this work, usually through Oxy's Summer Research Program, but also during NSF supported "field trips" to Los Alamos, Ames, or the MagLab in Tallahassee. Over the past few years George's research students have included Rishi Bhandia, Tim Chung, Leah Feuerman, Emily Hawkins, and Galen Mack-Crane.

Dennis Eggleston continues to use experiments, theory, and computer simulation in his quest to understand the confinement of non-neutral plasmas.

Janet Scheel continues to perform and analyze data from numerical simulations of Turblent Rayleigh-Benard Convection. She has used over 40 million supercomputer hours in the past year has and has accumulated over 50TB of data. Oxy students have participated in this research every summer. She has also visited collaborators every summer at the Technical University of Ilmenau in Germany.

In addition to his forays into cosmology, Alec Schramm is finally getting serious about writing a text based on his Math Methods course. (Stay tuned!)

As for myself, dark matter remains my passion fueled by another three-year NSF grant. Still no signs yet but I am branching out to look for dark matter created at accelerators. This summer, with a lot of help from our administrative assistant Tracy Mikuriya, I hosted an international conference on directional dark matter detection. Oxy is a nice place to host a conference! I continue to monitor the solar array. Since “first light” on March 4th 2013, 2.5 years ago, we have made 4.69 GWh of energy, prevented 3,234 metric tons of CO2 emissions

and saved the college $673k in electrical charges. At this rate the array should pay for itself in 9 years.

Chuck Oravec, our new Lou Wilkinson or Cliff Chen if you go back that far, has been a delightful dynamo to have around. In the last year alone he led four student projects, ran the Metropolitan Water District’s Solar Cup program and held four star-gazing parties. One of the student projects included launching a weather balloon to collect data and obtain pictures from 100,000 ft, see our front cover. Another included building a solar robot to help us understand the output of the solar array. Chuck’s exploits tend to dominate our FaceBook page. Please have a look and like us if you want to stay more up to date about Physics Department goings-on. Our administrative assistant Tracy Mikuriya does a great job keeping our social media up to date. Mike Garcia announced his retirement recently. He will be with us through the end of the academic year and then off to new adventures. Finally Russell Gleason, our second lab coordinator, left for family reasons last Spring. We wish him all the best at his new job in Colorado. He left a big hole in the department that we will try to fill this year. If you know of anyone interested in a lab-coordinator position please send them our way.

As always we enjoy hearing from you.

    Best Regards,

    Dan Snowden-Ifft, Chair

physics  that  cause  semiconductor  products  to  fail.  This  field  is  referred  to  as  Physics  of  Failures.    The  mechanism  I  discovered  was  that  semiconductors  will  fail  because  impuriFes  in  silicon  are  adracted  to  larce  strain.  My  work  made  the  disFncFon  that  larce  strain  was  a  rather  secondary  factor,  but  impuriFes  captured  by  larce  strain  was  a  "death  blow".
