Phytoestrogens• Phytoestrogens are literally ‘plant oestrogen’

• There are a number of types of phytoestrogens

• In soy, the main phytoestrogens are soy isoflavones

• Isoflavones have antioxidant properties

How phytoestrogens work

• When consumed, phytoestrogens bind to oestrogen receptors on target tissues.

• Phytoestrogens can promote some of the same effects as human oestrogen because they have a similar chemical structure

How phytoestrogens work • When oestrogen levels are high (as in PMS),

phytoestrogens compete with naturally produced oestrogen to lower oestrogen production.

• When oestrogen levels are low (as in menopause), phytoestrogens bind mimic natural oestrogen so the body thinks there is more circulating oestrogen.

Recommendation

Before medical treatments, the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) recommends first considering lifestyle changes, either alone or combined with a non-prescription remedy, such as dietary isoflavones/black cohosh.
