Page 2Letter from your President
Dear Friends,
I am sorry I was not able to be with you at ASHS in Austin this summer;however, I am honored to serve, again, as your President for the nexttwo years. On behalf of Pi Alpha Xi National, I extend great apprecia-tion to Dave Graper, Steve Newman, and Denny Wolnick for their ser-vice to the Society. As you may know, Ellen Paparozzi and DanielWarnock are the new Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer, respec-tively, for the Society. We are here to help you and your students berecognized, so let us know how we may serve you. With that in mind,I would like to draw your attention to two promotional items–honorcords and note cards.
Often when I extend an offer for Pi Alpha Xi membership to a student,I am asked about the benefits of membership. Clearly, some of themajor benefits are recognition, camaraderie with fellow students, andopportunity to interact with others in horticultural professions. Often, however, that prospective member is looking for something tangible.Honor cords, which consist of a set of two braided, tasseled strandsthat are gently knotted together at the center and worn over the gradu-ation gown, may be your solution to tangibly recognize your students. Both Jostens and Herff-Jones offer honor cords in colors that are veryclose to the official colors of the Society–Nile green and cerulean blue.See the Pi Alpha Xi National website at http://www.pax.okstate.edufor photographs and additional information about honor cords. De-pending on your institution’s regulations, you may need to seek ap-proval from your administration to recognize your graduating Pi AlphaXi members with honor cords. We recognized our graduating mem-bers this past May at Oklahoma State University, and the studentswere very surprised and quite honored to be celebrated in this way! Please, let me know if there is any additional information you needposted on the honor cord webpage to help you convince your admin-istration of the value of recognizing your students’ accomplishments.
Another great way to promote Pi AlphaXi and support your chapter is throughsales of Pi Alpha Xi note cards. Thanksto Dave Graper, winning photographsfrom past years’ Pi Alpha Xi Photogra-phy Contests have been printed ontoheavy cardstock and packaged inbundles of eight different note cardswith matching envelopes. See the Pi Al-pha Xi National website for additionalinformation. The cards are blank on theinside and thus can be used for any oc-casion. Either sold alone or in combi-nation with a plant sale, the cards pro-mote Pi Alpha Xi and provide a beauti-ful way for the giver to express his orher sentiment.
By the way, did you know that the an-nual Pi Alpha Xi Photography Contest, which is held at the ASHS Annual Con-ference, supports your chapter’s schol-arships? Pi Alpha Xi National will matchyour chapter’s scholarship up to $100per calendar year! See the Pi Alpha XiNational website for additional informa-tion.
Best wishes for a great academic year!
Doug

Over 85 floriculture faculty and undergraduate students from 11universities across the U.S. participated in the 62nd Annual NationalIntercollegiate Floral Crops Quality Evaluation and Design Competitionbetween April 2 and 4, 2003 at New Mexico State University in LasCruces. The event was co-sponsored by the American FloralEndowment and Pi Alpha Xi (the national honor society for floriculture, ornamental horticulture, and landscape horticulture). Sabine Green,New Mexico State University Floriculture Program Coordinator, wasthe principal organizer of the event.
Participating universities (with faculty and assistant coaches) includedCal Poly – San Luis Obispo (Prof. Virginia Walter, Julie Pedrini),Colorado State (Prof. Steven Newman), Illinois (Profs. Dianne Noland,Daniel Warnock), New Mexico State (Program Coordinator SabineGreen, Prof. G.A. Picchioni), Oklahoma State (Prof. DouglasNeedham, Sophia Kamenidou), Pennsylvania State (Prof. DennisWolnick), South Dakota State (Prof. David Graper, Ryan Boerboom,Miranda Ruth Towerton), Texas A&M (Prof. Jim Johnson), Utah State(Prof. LaMar Anderson, Sheri Andersen), Wisconsin – River Falls (Prof.Terry Ferriss, Nick Folk), and Wisconsin – Platteville (Prof. MikeCompton, Maggie Hinderman).
The competition is valuable to floriculture students. Just ask GenoPicchioni, the New Mexico State University horticulture faculty mem-ber overseeing the event. “In the floral crops quality evaluation com-petition, for example, the judging is based on industry standards thatdetermine prices growers get for their crops,” he said. “The designcompetition forces students to work ‘on-their-feet’ and under pres-sure situations that are highly relevant to retail florist working envi-ronments. This is the kind of experience that complements academicwork by helping students make the transition into their careers,”Picchioni stated. “Participating in this competition and representingone’s university in a professional capacity in such a ‘real world’ set-ting looks very nice on a resume.”
The spring 2005 competition is slated for April 6-8 on the campus ofthe University of Illinois at Urbana. Dr. Daniel Warnock, PAXi NationalSecretary-Treasurer and horticulture professor at the University ofIllinois will be the host.

1 Transfer of funds to main account June 28, 2004 from separate account managed by T. Ferriss. As of July 31, 2004, the “Manuals account” still
has approx. $3000, retained to pay for new printing. No such transfer occurred in 2003.
2 Intercollegiate Competition. At the annuial meeting in Providence, RI, Pi Alpha Xi members voted to commit more money to the IntercollegiateCompetition, specifically $500 to the host school for staging expenses, and a variable amount above the $1500 already contributed to team travelexpenses ($600 for the 2004 competition). The expenditure for the 2004 competition was $1100 more than 2003.
3 Pi Alpha Xi (80 years) and ASHA (100 years) were both celebrating anniversaries in 2003. The $1500 paid to ASHS was a one-time expense asco-sponsor of the networking event.
4 The larger one-time expenditures for note card printing and to ASHS were the reason why expenses exceeded income in 2004. However, thetreasury is healthy with a balance of $11,571.38 on July 31, 2004.

Pi Alpha Xi Meeting Minutes
Membership Report (D. Wolnick)Since the summer of 2001 when the last Lotus Leaflet was printed, 709 new members have been initiated into 16 of Pi Alpha Xi’s36 chapters. Total membership now stands at 12,705. Nine of the 16 chapters have initiated 117 members in the first six months of2004. The names of our new initiates since summer 2001 are featured in this Lotus Leaflet.
The entire membership of Pi Alpha Xi has now been entered into a database in Filemaker Pro. Besides providing initiationinformation, more extensive biographical information is also available for members who have distinguished themselves withleadership roles in Pi Alpha Xi, ASHS, SAF and the American Floral Endowment. In some cases current contact information andeven photos are included in the database if an individual has the information and pictures on the Web already. Initiation certificatesfor new members can be generated directly from the database.
Within a few months the database will be accessible on the Pi Alpha Xi Website www.pax.okstate.edu. Every member will be able tolook up his/her information directly, search for information about other Pi Alpha Xi members and even keep track of chaptermembership lists. When the database becomes available each Pi Alpha Xi member should verify his/her own information. Memberswill be able to edit their own information to some extent, or they can contact the Webmaster who can make the necessarycorrection.
The sixteen chapters of PAX initiating members between 2001 and 2004 are also the active chapters of the society. These chaptersare also generally up to date with their chapter dues. Alpha Kappa chapter at Mississippi State University just reactivated in 2003.Alpha Theta chapter at Iowa State University reactivated in 2004 and Tau chapter at the University of Georgia has indicated itsintent to reactivate in the near future. Requests for 2005 chapter dues will go out in October or November of 2004.
Lotus Leaflet ( S. Newman)The last Lotus Leaflet was published in late spring 2001. The newest Lotus Leaflet, which is overdue, should be published in thesummer of 2004. This Lotus Leaflet will also be posted on the PAX Website. This Lotus Leaflet will feature the results of the 2004Intercollegiate Floral Crop Evaluation and Design Competition at Colorado State University, and the names of newly initiated PiAlpha Xi members.

Publications and Membership Services Committee (David Graper for Terry Ferriss)
Members: Terry Ferriss, chair, Doug Needham, Karen Panter, Virginia Walter, Ellen Paparozzi, Dan Warnock
1. Activation of Chapters:Thanks to Ellen Paparozzi’s initiative and effort the inactive chapters were all contacted by Ellen, Karen or Terry. An email was alsosent to all Horticulture Department Heads via the ASHS list serve which encouraged their faculty to reinvigorate their chapters. Some universities indicated that they had no interest but others were more positive. Schools indicating they are interested inreactivating their chapters and the contacts are:
Washington State University Dr. Virginia LohrUniversity of Maryland Dr. Steve CohanUniversity of Florida Dr. Rick SchoellhornAuburn University Dr. Amy WrightNew Mexico State University Dr. Geno Picchioni / Sabine Green

In addition, Texas State University is slated to be installed as the 37th chapter in fall 2004. Two universities also expressed an interestin establishing a new chapter of PAX,
University of Wyoming Dr. Karen PanterUniversity of Arkansas Dr. Dave Hensley, Dept. Head
Overall, the level of interest is encouraging and suggests a positive outlook for PAX nationally.
2. Revision of the National Informational Brochure:The committee reviewed the format and information in the brochure and determined it should be revised. Dennis Wolnick alsoreported that the national supply of the current brochure is very low. Revision recommendations have been compiled by Terry.Terry has access to the free services of a publications developer on the UW-River Falls campus who can professionally format anew brochure. Cost of printing through UWRF services onto glossy 3.5 in. X 8 in. paper as current brochure, full color (use fullcolor key as on web site) would be $465 for 5000 and $0.05 per piece after that. Terry is willing to facilitate the process of printing anew brochure.
3. Flower Judging Manual:At the April 2004 National Intercollegiate Floral Crop Quality Evaluation and Design Contest Virginia Walter, Doug Needham andTerry Ferriss agreed to oversee the revision/reprinting of the next edition of the Flower Judging Manual to be released Fall 2004.Revisions will primarily be cleaning up errors and typos and a new cover. The first re-reading has been done and the project is onschedule.
The June 1, 2004 balance in the checking account that supports the Flower Judging Manuals was $5860.70. Terry sent $3000 to theNational PAX Account via Dennis Wolnick. The balance of $2860.70 will support the reprinting of the next set of manuals The lastreprinting in 2002 cost $3.60 per manual and this printing should be in that range. The supply of the current edition is less than 150.
Cost of postage to distribute the manual averages about $1 per manual. PAX currently charges $7 per manual which includespostage. This provides a small profit on the sales of manuals. It is recommended that the cost of the new edition remain at $7 permanual.
At the last National PAX meeting it was agreed that a copy of the Judging Manual should be sent to the Libraries of all universitieswith a horticulture program, complements of PAX. This will be done as soon as the next edition is printed fall 2004.
4. Support for the Scholarship Program:The current PAX National scholarship program provides a match of up to $100 to any PAX chapter that supports a match of atleast $100 to support a local scholarship at its institution. This amount has not changed since the beginning of the program. Thecommittee would encourage discussion of increasing the national participation in the scholarship program. Given the rising cost ofeducation should the national match be increased? By how much? Can the national afford an increase? Should there be anopportunity for chapters to offer more than one scholarship?
