Silicon Valley was chosen as the book distribution location because it is an area of great need. The Silicon Valley, home to technology company heavyweights like Genentech and Oracle, has 43% of 3rd-graders falling behind in reading, according to standardize test scores. Many of those students are from low-income families that are not part of the tech boom and who often can't afford to send their children to preschool programs. This static rises to a shocking 65% among Latino, African American and Pacific Islander children. Access to new, age-appropriate books will help change these children’s lives. Pi Beta Phi is helping put books into the hands of these deserving children in partnership with First Book ® , a nonprofit providing new books to its national network of schools and programs. Over the past several years, Pi Beta Phi has donated $1 million to literacy causes and given one million books to children in need. Now, the goal is to impact one million lives through its philanthropy Read > Lead > Achieve ® by the time Pi Beta Phi celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2017. #ReadLeadAchieve 1154 TOWN AND COUNTRY COMMONS DRIVE TOWN AND COUNTRY, MISSOURI 63017 (636) 256–0680
