Introduction of PIA

Pakistan International Airlines

Introduction

Pakistan International Airlines Corporation, commonly known as PIA is the flag

carrier airline of Pakistan. The airline with its head office in the grounds of Jinnah International

airport in Karachi is one of the largest airlines in Asia operating schedule services to 24 domestic

destinations and 39 international destinations in 25 countries across Asia, Europe and North

America. Its main bases are Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

The airline’s secondary bases are Peshawar, Faisalabad, Quetta, Sialkot and Multan from

which it connects the metropolitan cities with main bases the Middle East and the Far East. The

airline is owned by the Government of Pakistan 87% and other shareholders 13%.

History

Air transport has never been so important to the development of a new nation than in the

case of Pakistan. In June 1946, when the Pakistan was still in the offing Mr. Mohammad Ali

Jinnah the founder of the upcoming nation, instructed Mr. M.A Ispahani a leading industrialist to

stup a national airline on priority basis. At that time, a new airline named as “Orient Airways”

was registered in Calcutta on 23 October 1946. After the independence, Orient Airways started

its operations by offering flight services between East and West Pakistan, with the services from

Karachi to Dhaka on June 7, 1954. Today, it’s the Pakistan’s largest airline with a fleet of more

than 25 airplanes and at least 10 more on order.

An orient Airways was privately owned company with limited capital and resources. It

could not be expected to grow and expand independently. It was then the government of Pakistan

decided to form a state owned airline and invited Orient Airways to merge with it. The outcome

of the merger was the birth of a new airline named Pakistan international Airline (PIA) on 11,

March 1955. It is primarily owned by the government of Pakistan and is regulated by the

ministry of defense as an autonomous body, once regarded as Asia’s best airlines.

During one month of internship internee worked under the supervision of Ather Hussain

Awan. Internee made press clipping, write press release. There is as such no practical work in

this organization other than making press clipping. During one month of internship internee

made press clipping on daily bases. Despite of the fact that there is nothing to do practically

internee learned how to deal with public. Though it’s a very short time to learn anything.

Recommendation

This internship gave the internee a sense of confidence and her lots of skills are polished

in before related to public relations.

Internship help student in developing professional work habits and provide an

opportunity to analyze the difference in work style. Doing internship successfully is often an

excellent way of gaining actual employment in the same occupational field. Internship provides a

bridge between academic to professional world. As, it’s a bridge towards professional field thus

it should be after the completion of semester because it’s a half time job and students have to

give proper time to it. Moreover it becomes difficult for student to do internship along with

thesis and projects.

Suggestions

Page 13: Pia Report

13

I would like to give certain suggestions for PIA betterment and profitability.

1. PIA should adopt transparent policy that employees should be promoted on merit basis. And

Chairman of PIA should be appointed from within the organization. Union should support it, it

will motivate the employees and PIA will grow in profit.

2. Airline should focus on the customer’s satisfaction, refund process should be quick so that

customer remains loyal to brand.

3. PIA should not induct new employees till the time they are needed on the basis of my personal

observation at Rawalpindi station I have seen that a task which can be performed by person PIA

had 3 employees for that.

4. PIA should give bonus to the industrious and competent employees.

5. There should be control on the increase of fares, as mediocre are in majority in Pakistan, and it

is highly difficult for to even think about the air traveling. Management should think over it and

at least they can start a new packaged flight twice a week having 50% fares.

6. Unnecessary facilities provided to the Government Department should not be discouraged but

with drawn as it causes financial losses. .

7. Management should hire the services of specialized IT personnel for their system development

and up gradation on time.

8. There should be clear and even distribution of work and only qualified person should be

appointed on jobs.

Page 14: Pia Report

14

9. There should be improved service standards and that should focus on quality.

10.PIA should offer its services of reservation and seat confirmation with by SMS and flight

confirmation message should also be sent via SMS to the passenger.

Conclusion

By participating in an internship, one can gain experience and enhance their knowledge.

Internship is very helpful for students to explore their hidden abilities and learned a lot of new

things which they cannot experience while studying in university.
