Achievement Gap Panel Discussion Parents, educators and community representatives will engage in a thought-provoking discussion about the achievement gap. They will explore the cause, those impacted, the role and responsibilities of boards, parents/guardians and the community in closing the achievement gap. Information Marketplace Stroll through the Information Marketplace and collect ideas, strategies, resources, tools and gifts that will support you and your child’s education journey. The Market- place will feature an array of community agencies, TDSB programs and services, and vendors offering great educational ideas and giveaways throughout the day. Workshops • Managing middle school • Supporting learning at home • The story of achievement gap groups • My blueprint: an education planning tool for students and parents • Parent-Teacher Interview: making the most of your 5 minutes • Secondary pathways and choices • Enhancing the engagement of fathers, brother, uncles and grandpas in education • Supporting the early learner • Supporting your elementary English language learner • Understanding the school system for effective communication • School, Kids ‘n' Conflict • Raising money for your school without fundraising • The Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Individual Placement Review Committee (IPRC) • School council basics • Supports for newcomer families • Parent engagement: it’s more than school council • Parents supporting parents in education • Boys and girls: how do they learn? • Becoming a successful advocate for your child • Community partnerships and the achievement gap • Communications between the school and the home Interpretation, child-minding and bussing will be available through registration. French...helping your child succeed • Exploring the Aboriginal experiences in education…mind the gap! • School councils’ use of technology Dr. Scott Davies - Keynote Speaker Dr. Scott Davies is Professor of Sociology and Ontario Research Chair in Educational Achievement and At-Risk Students, McMaster University. He researches student achievement and the emergence of academic inequalities from preschool to post-secondary levels. His recent projects have been funded by or partnered with the Ministry of Education, the Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat, Human Resources and Social Development Canada, the Education Quality and Assessment Office of Ontario, the Provincial Centre of Excellence for Child and Youth Mental Health, along with school boards in Toronto and Hamilton. He has won awards from the American Education Research Association and the Canadian Education Research Association, is former Associate Editor for Canadian Public Policy, and is currently on the editorial boards of several academic journals.
