Hear the lakes calling

NATUREThe versatile nature, waters and ridges of Valkeakoski invite you to discover them. Row, paddle, fish, take a cruise. Visit cultural attractions in town and in Sääksmäki.

With 100 km2 of waterways in the town, there is room for eve-ryone to enjoy their leisure time and activities on the lakes.

Valkeakoski was born in a junction of waterways. The power of the rapids was harnessed and the town grew around it, along convenient water routes.

Logs are no longer floated on the lakes, but the significance of the waterways remains. A lot of the tourism, business, pleasure and leisure activities are afloat.

Town of bridges

Valkeakoski canal joins lakes Mallas-vesi and Vanajavesi. The picturesque pedestrian bridges over the water have become a landmark of the town. The 3-kilometre Apia bay walking route offers you a great chance to exercise and see the town centre at a glance.

Boat piers for townsfolk and visitors

The canal gives boaters access to both north and south, to the beautiful routes towards Hämeenlinna or Tampere, and via Kangasala to Längelmäki.

Visitors can stop and shop at the town centre or stay overnight at the Kirkonranta and Lepänkorva piers. The canal is user operated. When on the lakes, you can go ashore at the natural harbours and stroll in the nearby forests or islands.

These landscapes are a great stage for exercise and recreation all year round. In the autumn, you can grab a basket and enjoy a berry or mush-room picking adventure in one of the surrounding forests with your family.

Oar, paddle, lure or jig

The geography of Valkeakoski creates great conditions for both competitive athletes and those who want to enjoy the nature and the water while exercising. Engines will take you far, but you can also get around just using your muscles. Rowing has long traditions and strong roots here.

Canoeing routes

The waters around Valkeakoski are well suited for activities such as canoeing. The Mallasveden melojat canoe club trains canoeing enthusiasts and offers courses twice a year. Lakes Roine, Mallasvesi, Längelmävesi and Vanajavesi beckon with their varying sceneries. Here you can find 1-3 day long easy to moderate canoe routes.

Quality rowing stadium

The Lotilanjärvi stadium with its 1650-metre course is one of Finland’s top venues for competitive rowing. This year the stadium will host the Finnish championship competition for large boats. The Valkeakosken Vesiveikot rowing club has a history of success in the sport. The brightest star of the club is Veli Lehtelä, who won Olympic bronze medals in Melbourne in 1956 and in Rome four years later.

Try your luck fishing

Freedom to roam, or ”Everyman’s right”, is a reality in Valkeakoski. You can go fishing almost at your doorstep – in summer and in winter. There are places for angling and spinning right in the town centre, by the Apia pedestrian bridges. The lakes surrounding the town are rich with fish. In winter you can even try ice fishing on the frozen lakes.

The most beautiful lake sceneries in Finland are found here in the central Häme region. Valkeakoski rests in the junction where the routes of lakes Vanajavesi and Längelmävesi meet.

A lake boat cruises from Valkeakoski to Tampere and Hämeenlinna on a breathtakingly beautiful water route. At times, the open lake area narrows into a winding channel that sweeps the lakeshore pastures. The Finnish Silverline cruise boats stop at the Sääksmäen silta pier and Visavuori museum pier. Charter cruises are also available to the Rönnvik winery, among other attractions.

More information on all cruises is available at the Valkeakoski tourist office Tel. 040 335 6051.

Dazzling views from the ridge

The remnants of the ancient Rapola hill fort are still visible at the top of the rocky 70 metre high hill. It pays off to climb up – the magnificent views alone make it worth your while.

The hill fort, which has been classified as a significant national landmark, was most likely used as an escape in the past. It was easy to defend, and local inhabitants withdrew there when the enemy was approaching.

There are two paths to the ridge that depart from the grounds of Voipaala manor and take you through a lesson in local history. The beautiful ridge has two nature conservation areas and some rare plant species thrive there.

Government tends the ridge

Rapola ridge is one of the most important cultural relic sites in Finland. The ancient fields, burial mounds and sacrifical stones tell a story of housing dating back 3,500 years. A govern-ment programme to restore the hill fort, its steps and structures is set to begin this year. The information posts will also be replaced later and Rapola will get its own pages on the www.luontoon.fi nature guide website.

Rapola is the largest of the 100 ancient forts in Finland. Its ramparts were over 1,000 metres long. The fort served the area in 800-1250 and had its own well and two entries.

Rapola manor, situated on the hillside, is the birthplace of the third president of the Republic of Finland, Pehr Evind Svinhufvud (1861–1944).

The nearby Ritvala village is home to the Helka Festival. The festival is celebrated at Whitsun and remains the oldest folk festival in Finland.

Culture flourishes in Sääksmäki with its many attractions. If you arrive from the south, you can enjoy the most beautiful views in the region. The name of Sääksmäki stems from a handsome bird of prey and was known as early as the mid-1500s. The 500-year-old Sääksmäki church is a popular place for weddings.

Take a nature walk with a guide! Guided walking tour to Rapola ridge, prices from 50 €/group/1h. Inquiries tel. 040 335 6051.

Firmly anchored in the paper industry past of the town, the Haka football club was established in 1932. For many townspeople Haka equals football, but this club brings people together also in many other sports.

Widely known football stadium

FC Haka plays its men’s first division matches on the Tehtaan kenttä football field, one of the landmarks of the town. The history of the club includes nine Finnish championships, among other feats.

Football enjoys great conditions in Valkeakoski. In addition to the brand new synthetic grass field at the Tehtaan kenttä stadium, the town boasts another synthetic grass field that can be used year round. There is also an indoor football arena and several natural grass fields.

In addition to football and gymnastics, the Haka sports association has seven sport divisions: skiing, basketball, speed skating, orienteering, boxing, track and field, and veterans. Haka offers sports for people of all ages all year round. Both for top athletes and leisure sports enthusiasts.

A ski centre for a skiing people Korkeakangas ski centre opens the first ski track among the first ski centres in Southern Finland.

You can ski free of charge on the 1 km long “First snow” track made from stored snow.

Korkeakangas ski centre offers good conditions for both cross country and downhill skiing for those who enjoy winter sports during Southern Finland’s skiing season.

The ski centre is easy to reach both from the centre of Valkeakoski and from further away.

The varying terrain of Korkeakangas is well suited to cross country skiing. There are several great lit tracks in the surroundings of the downhill slopes, both for classic and skate style skiing.

Haka is one of the best-known skiing clubs in Finland, and Korkeakangas has hosted several national championship competitions.

A place for the whole familyThe whole family can enjoy winter activities at Korkeakangas. There are

two lit downhill slopes including a freestyle terrain. The slopes are also suited for beginners. The freestyle area includes jumps, presses, rails and other features. For the little ones there is a separate sledding slope.

The vertical drop of the slopes is 62 metres and their lengths are 240 m and 330 m. The prices are reasonable: you can get a day pass for 15/20 €, and a season pass is only 150/220 €. Equipment rental and a cafe are also available.

Roukko trailsIn addition to Korkeakangas, there are tracks and trails in the Roukko skiing area with lengths that vary between 1 km and 23 km. The shorter tracks are lit, so you can ski comfort-ably after dark. The trails are connect-ed all the way to Kangasala and Tampere.

All year round – ski and hike on the same trails!

The centre has grown around hotel Waltikka. Scenic exercise paths and fishing areas open up from the doorstep of the hotel.

Sport and leisure travel has become one of the main forms of tourism in Valkeakoski. Professional and leisure athletes come here, even from far away, to get a boost for a new season. The functional combination of sport and wellness attracts visitors all year round.

A wellness park has sprung up in the centre of Valkeakoski. The great conditions attract top athletes and athletic clubs from Finland and abroad.

Training ground for top athletes

Professional teams and junior sports clubs have trained in Valkeakoski for many years now. Moscow ZSKA, Lev Prague and St Petersburg Spartak, just mention a few. The teams have had tailored programmes according to their individual needs. The fitness services are completed by skilled masseurs, and you can even enjoy relaxing sauna yoga sessions.

In addition to sports, the town centre offers wellness services for the mind. Various theatre, museum and concert packages are popular. There are also convenient places to go shopping.

industrial and international history. You can sense the international atmosphere created by our export industry and the international pro-grammes of the Häme University of Applied Sciences in the everyday life of the town.

Our central location in the growth corridor of Finland offers great conditions for business and industry, entrepreneurship and living. The current economic structure of the town is quite varied. In addition to town administration, the biggest employers here are Saarioinen food factory, UPM paper mills, Valkeakoski district hospital, and the packaging material manufacturers Bemis, Walki and Adara Pakkaus.

9

The town is 95 per cent self-sufficient in terms of workplaces. People also come to work and shop here from neighbouring communities.

Families appreciate an environment that is not only built on grown-up terms. The smaller scale matters: Valkeakoski is a safe place to grow up, experiment, experience and learn.

In Valkeakoski, day care centres and schools are close by. The youngest members of the family also have lots of options for hobbies. Here you can experiment and find the right hobby just for you. On your own or in a school or club.

Sport, recreation, arts

Children can choose an individual or team sport best suited for them. There are plenty of teams, clubs and coaches, and you can also practice your skills with your friends in our parks and beaches.

Kids can also start more artistic hobbies from an early age: the ballet school accepts three-year-olds. In addition to ballet, Valkeakoski Lifelong Learning Centre offers arts education for children and youth in music, fine arts and crafts, and drama.

Learning skills in sports as well as performing arts is always an investment in a healthy future.

Apia is packed with activities for kids

Splash or swim in the pretty lagoon, build sand castles on the beach, climb on the log bastion, hang in the climbing net or dive into the sliding tube. The popular Apia adventure park is a playground for the playful.

The adventure park is open daily all year round. Entry is free for the whole family. Just next door, the covered outdoor stage of the summer theatre hosts various events for people of all ages in summer. The sporty and relaxing area is completed by a skate park, a beach for swimming and a sport field. The area also houses a lakeshore sauna and snack shop.

Develop your driving skills

In the children’s traffic playpark, future drivers get to drive pedal cars and ride tricycles. At the same time they learn basic rules of traffic in a

safe environment. The traffic playpark is situated next to the Sahara heated synthetic grass football field.

There are also plenty of open green spaces for games and adventures. We have 74 hectares of parks and green areas and over 240 hectares of forests. There are 36 playgrounds, half of which are situated on day care centre or school premises.

The thriving Valkeakoski theatre believes and invests in local stage art.

A few theatre professionals, skilled amateurs and regular guest stars produce popular, unique premieres and performances annually.

The theatre building, formerly owned by the paper mill, is an old and prestigious building in the town centre. The main stage seats 228 and the small stage seats 60 viewers. The theatre and its restaurant can also be rented for private functions.

Valkeakoski theatre produces unique experiences

Musical Niin Kuin Taivaassa (As If In Heaven)

As If In Heaven is a warm-hearted story about the power of choir singing, love, fear and prejudice. Starring Enni Hakala, Juha Kulmala and Johanna Kyykoski, directed by Christian Sandström.

Join the theatre

If you are interested in the theatre, join the stage ensemble or the sound and lighting team. New talents are al-ways welcome.

Pääroolissa Pätkä – Starring Shorty

The Apia summer theatre, dubbed the most beautiful one of its kind in Finland, continues to please the crowds in its sixth season. This summer’s premiere is a musical called Pätkä pääroolissa (Starring Shorty).

There is room for 850 viewers under the covered stage, which will keep audiences dry in all kinds of weather. The previous productions of the Finnish Summer Theatre have attracted a total of over 120,000 viewers.

This summer’s production is based on the life of actor-comedian Masa Niemi in the 1950s Finland.

The musical is also a tribute to the evergreens of Toivo Kärki, whose centennial is celebrated this year.

During the summer, the stage features alternating guest stars such as Pirkko Mannola, Marion Rung, Eino Grön, Veeti Kallio, Mikael Konttinen, Vieno Kekkonen, Matti Esko, Marjatta Leppänen, Leif Lindeman and Jaakko Ryhänen.

The summer theatre also hosts free public events, concerts and private functions.

age of Finnish art, Emil Wikström (1864–1942) built his Karelian style home and atelier in Visavuori, Sääks-mäki, more than 150 year ago. This interesting log villa, now serving as a museum, is an excellent illustration of the national romantic artist’s life. The area can be reached by car on the old route 3 and by boat or Finnish Silverline waterbus.

Organ and observatory

Visavuori is decorated with original furniture and fireplaces designed by the artist himself, among other objects. About 100 sculptures are displayed. The restored gardens of the villa are an attraction in their own right.

The organ and observatory of the villa illustrate the wide interests of the master. The area also houses a museum shop and a café in the old atelier foundry.

Kari’s lines are alive

Artist Kari Suomalainen (1920–1999) was the best-known cartoonist in the country. Emil Wikström was his grandfather. In 2015, the separate Kari pavilion in Visavuori illustrates the works of both artists.

The museum and changing exhibitions are open all year round. Various art and music events also take place here.

Voipaala manor and art centre at the foot of the ancient Rapola hill fort embraces both today’s and yesterday’s worlds.

The manor holds a significant place in Finnish cultural history. Its past is full of grand noble families, and the first professional theatre in Finland, today known as the National Theatre of Finland, was established in its stable attic in 1872.

The art centre has found new vibrancy, fame and atmosphere by cooperating with local businesses. One of the new activities is “Manor house dinner” that you can enjoy in conjunction with a theatre performance.

The Draamaräätälit dramatic company have adopted the Voipaala barn theatre. In this intimate atmosphere, they stage performances that combine poetry, song and drama – not to forget music.

Art all year round

The main building and courtyard galleries exhibit art all year round. Concerts, art courses, meetings and celebrations also take place here. The manor also boasts a fine, rare and historical baroque garden that dates back to the 18th century.

A proper manor also has a ghost. Legend has it that a grey lady appears in Voipaala every now and then.

11th Sääksmäki Soi! Classical music festival 2.–5.7.2015

The festival is headed by artistic director Jukka Iisakkila. The festival features concerts in Sääksmäki church, Voipaala art centre and Visavuori museum under the theme “Jean Sibelius and Carl Nielsen 150 years”.

14

There was permanent habitation in Valkeakoski as early as in the 5th century.

1973 Sääksmäki annexed to Valkeakoski

As early as 140 years ago the first paper mill was founded into the junction of waterways. The mill village became perhaps one of the best known paper towns in the country, thanks to the large paper mill UPM and its predecessor. Today the main Myllysaari factory building houses two museums. It is also a venue for many kinds of cultural events and functions. A new youth centre will be opened in the smaller building early in the summer.

The permanent exhibition of Myllysaari museum is called VANA. The word means “wake”, the track left by a boat moving through water. The journey takes the viewer from the Iron Age through to today.

15

Myllysaari dominates the canal shore. The area is a nationally significant cultural environment. “Myllysaari” means “mill island” and, true enough, the area housed grain mills as early as in the Middle Ages.

Myllysaari has a story to tell

The multimedia presentation built around the miniature model of Valkea-koski introduces local history in a modern way. The story brings distant trades and people to life.

Finnish football museum

Situated by the canal, near the legendary Tehtaan kenttä football field, the museum is the only one of its kind in Finland. The museum displays more than 100 years of Finnish football history through uniforms, trophies, and featured Finnish football legends.

You can take a sentimental journey on a 1930s locker room bench. The museum also houses a library and a spectator

stand that serves as a lecture and meeting space.

The Kauppilanmäki open air museum is situated on the opposite shore of the canal. Five houses, a storage building and a smoke sauna illustrate workers’ living conditions more than a century ago. The area also houses a workers’ hall.

Juuso’s gondolaOne of the unique items of Myllysaari museum is a genuine Venetian gondola. The gondola was acquired by the legendary paper mill owner Juuso Waldén, whose influence is still clearly visible in Valkeakoski. This souvenir of Juuso’s was used to entertain official guests on the lakes around Valkeakoski. The gondola came to Valkeakoski in the early 1960s, and at the time it was believed that the only genuine gondolas outside of Venice were in Valkeakoski, Amsterdam and Hollywood.
