• Our goal is to empower you with the computer skills necessary to succeed in college and to help prepare you for your career. (See the “Learning Objectives” in the course syllabus.)

What is I-SYS?• Not to be confused with “Isis”

the Egyptian Goddess of fertility and motherhood.

• I-SYS stands for “Information Systems”

– The academic discipline covering the application of people, technologies, and procedures—collectively, the information system—to business problems. (www.Wikipedia.org)

Class Logistics

• I-SYS 100 & 101 are Block classes, so they only last half of the semester.

– Section 1 means that it will be the first half of the semester and section 2 will be the 2nd half.

• These classes can be taken in either order or even at the same time.

2. SAM 2003 3.1 CD - $20.00

1. This program is used to take the final exam.

2. Everybody has to purchase a SAM CD (you have to type in your CD-code the first time you log on.)

3. If you are in both classes you only need ONE CD.

• If the bookstore runs out of either item, order one!

Grades• These courses are Pass/Fail.

• Requirements to Pass:

1. Get at least 140 out of 200 Blackboard points (70%).

• Lesson, SAM login, Syllabus, and survey quizzes.

2. Score at least 80% on the SAM final exam.

Why Take I-SYS 100 & 101?

• Pre-requisites to the business school.

• Make College easier.

• Increase employment opportunities.

• But most importantly, to become computer literate!

How These Classes Work

• Self-taught using the course manuals.

• Weekly lessons with Blackboard quizzes due Thursdays.

• The Final-exam is an online test using SAM 2003.

• All quizzes and the final exam are open-book (but not open-neighbor.)

• You may work ahead and finish early.

People get confused… it’s OK.

• As you teach yourself the material in the manual you may have trouble understanding some of the topics.

• If this happens, come and see us in the TA lab.

• The TAs will be available for help and instruction in room 240 TNRB.

• The days and times are listed on the handout.

• If 240 is being used, we will be in room 1118 JKB.

• Come to the lab hours!

Hands-on Labs• We may also hold some optional hands-on

instruction labs to go over some of the more difficult topics in the class.

• Look for emails and announcements to notify you of the time and location of these labs.

Blackboard Quizzes

• At the end of every lesson in the manual there is a quiz that you need to answer.

– That same quiz is listed on Blackboard.

– Copy the answers directly from your manual to blackboard.

• At least one quiz is due every Thursday.

– See the handout for due dates. (“Due Date” = Last day to take quiz)

– The quizzes are due Thursday nights at midnight. The quizzes must be completed before midnight! Otherwise BB doesn’t grade them.

– The Blackboard quizzes have a 1 hour time-limit.

Blackboard

• The manuals may have some links to websites that are no longer functioning.

• There is an updated list on blackboard of all the links in the manual.

• Feel free to read whatever else you can find on blackboard, it’s all useful information.

The lessons may tell you to download a file from blackboard to work with. They are listed under “Data Files.”

Right click the file you need and select “Save Target As…”

Don’t just click on the file, doing this will merely display that file on blackboard.

SAM Explained

• S.A.M. – Skills Assessment Manager.

• SAM is a simulation of Excel and PowerPoint that asks you to perform certain tasks.

• Your final exam will be taken using SAM.

• SAM requirements:

– SAM does not work on Macintosh computers.

– You must use Internet Explorer to run SAM (No Firefox).

• Internet Explorer MUST be set as your Default Browser!Boredom-Relief Gumby

Starting SAM• Do NOT create your own SAM account. After the

add/drop deadline, you will receive an email from us saying that you may now login to SAM.

• Your username and password will both be your email address as listed on Route Y.

– For example, JasonAHunt@byu.net

• Login and enter the CD code from your CD.

– You only need to enter your CD code the first time you login.

DO NOT CREATE YOUR OWN SAM ACCOUNT!!!

DO NOT ASK US FOR AN INSTITUTION CODE!!!

SAM Login Quiz

1. To make sure that SAM works on your computer, take any practice quiz on SAM.

2. If the quiz works and you see your score at the end, then SAM is working on your computer.

3. Go to blackboard and take the “SAM login quiz” which asks if you were able to successfully take a quiz in SAM. (See handout for due dates.)

1. This is due early in the semester to make sure SAM is working OK for you. That way if it’s not, we can fix it.

SAM Exams• The final exam has a 50 minute time-limit and

allows only three attempts per task. (It’s open book!)

• There are also optional practice quizzes in SAM that accompany the lessons in the manual and three practice exams.

– The practice quizzes for each lesson go offline the same time that its corresponding blackboard quiz is due (See the handout for due dates.)

– Please take the Practice Quizzes!

• YOU CANNOT TAKE A PRACTICE QUIZ AFTER ITS DUE DATE!!!

After every quiz your score should appear in a window like this.

If it doesn’t, then your scores aren’t being recorded.

FIX THIS BEFORE YOU TAKE

THE FINAL EXAM!!!

If you have any problems running SAM on your home computer go to the login page, click on the “Browser Configuration Help” link, and follow the instructions.

You can avoid technical problems by using SAM in 240 TNRB, 1118 JKB, or in any of the open access computer labs on campus.

Internet Explorer 7.0

• The browser configuration help link does not include help for Internet Explorer 7.0

• This help information is posted on Blackboard under “Course Information.”

To run SAM on any of the open access computer labs on campus you MUST open it through the start menu as seen here.

THIS IS THE ONLY WAY SAM WILL WORK ON THE OPEN ACCESS COMPUTERS!!!

Even if you use SAM on a campus computer you still need to enter a CD code the first time you log on to SAM.

Bad Sam Example

Here is an email I received at 10:47 PM on the final-exam due date for block 2 of winter semester 2006:

ok... i know that i just sent an email tell(ing) you that i got locked out of taking the exam, but i re-read the e-mail that said that it would be VERY difficult to convince you to let me take it (late)!!!!! that can't happen! i need this class so bad! i know the material and i know that i will pass the final! PLEEEEEEAAASE! i'll take it as soon as i get an e-mail back! i even used a BYU computer so that this problem wouldnt happen! and after the second practice exam, it did! if i dont take this final my scholarship will be taken away! i know that i should (not) have left it for tonight but i had two other finals this week! please! (Name withheld)

Case #1 - Johnny• Johnny ignored the

emails that the TA’s sent him.

• He forgot to take a few quizzes and gave up on the course.

• Johnny failed.

Case #2 - Jane

• Because the SAM quizzes were optional, Jane didn’t logon to SAM until the day before the final was due.

• She ran into technical problems and couldn’t submit her final in time.

• Jane failed. Also, because she failed, she lost her scholarship.

Case #3 - Beth

• Beth read the handout and syllabus carefully.

• She completed her assignments before the due dates.

• She also read each email that the TA’s sent her.

• Beth passed.

MOS Exam

• M.O.S. – Microsoft Office Specialist

• Get certified by Microsoft to use PowerPoint and Excel.

MOS Exam

• The MOS exam is optional. (Yup, you can Skip It!)

– Looks good on a resume.

– It costs an additional $30 per exam.

• The MOS Exam is an online test similar to the SAM final.

– Slightly more difficult.

– Given at the beginning and end of each block.

• See the handout for testing dates.

MOS Exam

• If you pass the MOS exam(s) at the beginning of the block, you may drop the class(es) and get course equivalent credit.

– Fax, mail, or take your certificate(s) to 460 TNRB along with a challenge examination form available at the ASB.

• You may also take the MOS exam at the end of the block and it will replace your SAM final.

– You will still need 140 Blackboard points to pass.

• To take the MOS Exam, sign up in 510 TNRB and read the MOS Exam instructions posted on Blackboard under “Course Information.”
