Welcome to the 27th Oundle International Festival!
This year we have on offer the eclectic mix that has becomethe benchmark for Oundle International Festival, with musicianscoming from far afield – the New Zealand String Quartet, organists Janette Fishell and Colin Andrews from the UnitedStates, and the wonderfully named Spooky Men’s Choralefrom Australia - and also much closer to home: the FestivalChorus takes the stage again, and Oundle has a ‘Fringe’!This year we celebrate two world premières, both Festivalcommissions. Celebrated composer Julian Grant has written a superb opera for Oundle – ‘Prophet and Loss’ – whichoffers the opportunity for community choirs to take their placeon stage with outstanding opera singers and a professionalorchestra. There are three performances during the Festival, so don’t miss the chance to hear this imaginative andcaptivating work. And Iain Farrington was commissioned bythe Festival to write a piece for chamber orchestra, ‘Cityscape’,which will be given its first performance by Aurora Orchestra.Iain is a terrific young composer; hear another of his worksduring Simon Johnson’s Peterborough Cathedral organ recital.Musicians making their first visit to Oundle include outstandingyoung baritone Marcus Farnsworth and Venezuelan violinistGiovanni Guzzo, and Martin Baker will send shivers down thespine in the Gothic splendour of Peterborough Cathedral withhis organ improvisation to the classic silent film ‘The Hunchbackof Notre Dame’. Folk music too makes its first appearance thisyear, and who better to launch this genre than the KathrynTickell Band, famous worldwide for its infectious rhythms and superb musicianship. A warm welcome awaits the returnof Aurora Orchestra, who gave such a stunning performancein 2011 and will set the Festival alight in similar fashion thisyear; also T G Collective, a young and exciting band whichhas entertained audiences here twice before. The Food Festival makes a welcome return in 2011, havingachieved a celebrity status of its own. It will be taking a leadingrole in Fringe events, new to the Festival this year. Look outfor performances in unexpected places and support thesetalented local artists.Against the backdrop of all these events will be a week ofintensive teaching to the gifted young students attendingour Oundle for Organists courses, which run concurrentlywith the Festival. The inspiring tutors are equally outstandingin performance. If you haven’t been to an organ recital before, give one a try – it may be a revelation!None of what we do at Oundle Music Trust would be possiblewithout the support of you, our Friends, sponsors, audiencesand supporters of every kind. Whatever your taste we hopeyou will find plenty to enjoy during Festival week in Oundleand look forward to seeing you in July.
