General Meeting – 7 pm August 30, 2017

KEOKUK GEODES

Geodes are found in a wide area around the southeast corner of Iowa, which includes sites east across the Mississippi River in Hamilton, Illinois and south to the northeast corner of Missouri near Alexandria. The geologic formation in which they are found is the Warsaw. These Keokuk geodes can include mineralization from a list of at least 20 separate minerals; occurring singly or in combination. The majority of these geodes are hollow, unlike the geodes found in southern Indiana.

The DVD we will watch was produced by the Midwest Federation and while not quite as professional as other programs, there is a multitude of examples of mineralization.

Show Cornerby Sue Goedert

It’s almost here! I’m really excited for another Show this year, and it can only be successful with everyone’s help. As usual, the signups to work at the show will be on the back tables at the club meeting this month. Please sign up. There are a few changes this time. We have moved the opening time back to 10am for both Friday and Saturday, so some of the shifts have changed slightly.

Meal will be provided for those that work and for our dealers. Shari Luttikhuizen is taking that over this year, and in an effort to minimize costs we are asking for more donations. She’s got some fun ideas, but we still need some people to bring main dishes like crockpot lasagna (she’s got an easy recipe ready) and sloppy joes and we also need lots of salads, cookies, and desserts to go with it, as well as lunchmeat, cheese and bread for lunches.

Please start getting your items ready for Silent Auction and the Artisan Market. The forms for Silent Auction are on the website under the Show tab at the bottom. We will be doing things a bit different for the Artisan Market this year, more on that at the meeting. All items need to be there by 6pm Thursday.

We have lots of openings for displays – please sign up and share your special treasures! Those get set up Thursday and need to come down right after we close Sunday. Any questions, contact Linda Plummert.

One other change we are making is that liquids are not allowed on the field unless they are in an enclosed container. Ice water and coffee will be provided, but please bring your own covered mug or water bottle if you need it on the field. This is something that can damage the turf and we want to make sure to keep our relationship on a positive note.

President's Message

We’re just back from the annual July picnic, this year at Bob and Julia Sherwoods, and had a wonderful time. If you missed out, you missed some great potluck dishes, a chance to see some spectacular rock collections, commune with others that love rocks, discuss recent and future collecting opportunities, a chance to collect rocks along the beach shore, and even a chance to see the sun dip again into the distant horizon curve of Lake Michigan.

Many thanks to the Sherwoods for hosting a great picnic! As we have all been following, the TCGMC was blessed with the opportunity to find good homes

to the many specimens collected by Larry Graves. If you weren’t a winning bidder or raffle winner andmissed the opportunity to obtain some of these for your own collection, the agate team has been busyat work to give every family that wants a chance to put some of these in your own collection. They’ve diligently portioned out about 2 lbs of Lake Superior agates in some smaller sizes than the 2.9 lb “Larry Graves” auctioned off in our October meeting. The agate team will have these available, one lot per family member for the next few months. Come to the August or October meeting and you can pick out a pre-sorted bags for the very economical price of $3 per bag. I hope every family will take advantage of this one-time opportunity. See Shari Luttikhuizen or Julia Sherwood to purchase your one bag of Lake Superiors from the Larry Graves collection no later than our general club meeting on October 25th.

I have already picked up my bag, and it will be a special group of rocks. There are some beautiful pieces to display, but I also enjoy them because of who owned them. In the July 2017 volume of Rock & Gem, author Bob Jones discusses the value of provenance of a specimen. That means that tracked prior ownership of gem or mineral can add to its collectable and monetary value. He used an example of a piece of bournonite that could be traced back to the mid-1800’s. I have pieces in my collection that mean more to me because they were once owned by early members of our Tulip City Gem and Mineral Club. I have also been privileged to receive several very collectable and beautiful minerals collected by Dr. Steve Chamberlain, well-known mineralogist and author of several books onminerals. More on this subject in future messages.

Next on the agenda, in case you haven’t been paying attention, is the famous Annual Tulip City Gem and Mineral Club Show! I have been so thrilled to see the growth of this activity and also expanded involvement from so many volunteers. There’s still room for joining the fun. Don’t miss out. Sign up for one or several spots at our August general meeting, but if for some reason you’re not ableto make that meeting give Sue Goedert, our show chair, a call at 616-452-7843.

A True Rockhoundby Chet Smith

Last month my granddaughter, Tamara, came to visit me. Tammy lives in Kentucky, and is a 6 th grade teacher.

After our converstaion slowed down, Tammy picked up a magazine and started to read about “Kentucky Lapis Lazuli”. The magazine was “Rocks and Moinerals” dated May/June 1961!

This month I received a note in the mail from Tammy. She said their family had hiked two miles around Lake Hematite (that was mentioned in the article) and found a lot of Kentucky Lapis Lazuli! Enclosed in the letter was a small plastic bag with a few pieces of Kentucky Lapiz Lazuli the had found while hiking.

I re-read the article.

Sign Up for a Show Display

OK folks – this is your chance to fill a display case for the Show. We have plenty of display cases, let's fill them all!

Doesn't your garage, shed, or basement have some beautiful, interesting rocks that want to see the light of day? Don't you have a display case at home full of rocks, gems, and minerals that would like to be admired by some eager young folks or by some senior citizen looking to shock his or her brain with some new and different information?

You may say, “I've never done that before” or “My collection isn't nice enough”, or “I don't have time!” If you love rocks, just make a display with the title “This is why I love rocks” And then in your display you can show us why you love rocks. If you've been on a family vacation or a field trip with theClub, we'd like to see what you found and where you found it. The first display is the hardest and we'llhelp you with that.

You display needs to be set up on Thursday before the Show between 3pm and 8pm. We will be at the Soccer Stop to greet you and show you where to set up. The case needs to be emptied out at 5pm on Sunday at the end of the Show.

To reserve a case, either sign up at the General Meeting on Wednesday August 20, or call me at 616-669-6759 (or 616-427-2894). And please, if you have any questions, call or email me at [email protected].

Thank you!Linda Plumert

New Member Profile: Amy & Rachel Gonzalez

by Bob Sherwood

Amy, and her step-daughter, Rachel, joined our club at last year’s show. Rachel had first heard about Tulip City while shopping at Silva & Son’s in Zeeland a few years ago when a customer asked if she was a member. (Wonder who that customer was!) They both love rocks and wanted to learn more about them, then after learning more about us as a club and letting it “simmer” a bit, the two eventually joined.

Rachel graduated Zeeland High School then attended Kendall Art School and Columbia College in Chicago. She is currently employed by Yan Feng, formerly Johnson Controls. When Amy was young she had a grandfather in Tennessee who collected arrowheads, so that has stayed with her through the years. Both would like to do more field collecting and thoroughly enjoyed collecting fossilson the Alpena-Lafarge trip. They both had a chance to meet members at the recent picnic; in fact Rachel got so carried away with picking up rocks on the beach she missed dinner but made up for it staying late after everyone else had left and had leftovers. Rachel would also like to learn lapidary techniques, so hopefully our club members can help with that.

Amy & Rachel would love to travel, especially to our western states, as well as Hawaii. Ireland, Scotland and England would be on Amy’s future agenda.

Let’s help encourage these two budding rockhounds!

“Geodes—Mother Nature’s Gifts”

This year the topic for Club’s annual Show in September is geodes! So, juniors, let’s learn alittle about geodes ahead of time: our August junior meeting topic will be on geodes!

Geodes have such wide appeal. I wonder if that’s not because they are like gifts, like Mother Nature’s gifts. The real surprise is on the inside and you have to open them up to see the gift. In our August meeting you’ll learn a little about the “box” and the “wrapping” of these gifts…because not every hollow cavity withcrystals inside is a geode. To be a geode (insteadof a vug) there has to be that “packaging.” We’ll also learn about the different kinds of crystals that can show up inside these “packages,” and of course we’ll have some show-and-tell specimens to illustrate some of these different mineral materials. Finally we’ll learn about some places that you could visit to collect geodes, even some places here in Michigan.

Why not join us for our Junior Meeting on geodes, Wednesday, August 30 at 7:00 at Zeeland’s Howard Miller Community Center.
