It Is prohibited to possess or operate a motor vehicleon National Forest System lands on the KootenaiNational Forest other than in accordance with thesedesignations (36 CFR 261.13)
V iolators of 36 CFR 261.13 are su bject to a fine of u pto $5,000, imprisonment for u p to 6 months, or both (18U .S .C. 3571(e)).T his prohibition applies reg ardless of thepresence or absence of sig ns.
T his map does not display nonmotorized u ses, over-snow vehicle u ses, or other facilities and attractions on theT hree Rivers Rang er District. O btain forest visitorinformation from the local national forest office.
Desig nated roads, trails and areas may also be su bjectto temporary, emerg ency closu res. As a visitor, you m u stcomply with sig ns notifying you of su ch restrictions. Anational forest may issu e an order to close a road, trail orarea on a temporary basis to protect the life, health, orsafety of forest visitors or the natu ral or cu ltu ral resou rcesin these areas. OPERATORRESPONSIBILITIES
O perating a motor vehicle on N ational Forest S ystemroads and in areas on N ational Forest S ystem landscarries a g reater responsibility than operating that vehiclein a city or other developed setting . N ot only m u st youknow and follow all applicable traffic laws, you need toshow concern for the environment as well as other forestu sers. T he misu se of motor vehicles can lead to thetemporary or permanent closu re of any desig nated road,trail, or area. As a motor vehicle operator, you are alsosu bject to S tate traffic law, inclu ding S tate requ irementsfor licensing , reg istration, and operation of the vehicle inqu estion.
Motor vehicle u se, especially off-hig hway vehicle u se,involves inherent risks that may cau se property damag e,seriou s inju ry, and possibly death to participants. Drivecau tiou sly and anticipate rou g h su rfaces and featu res,su ch as snow, m u d, veg etation, and water crossing scommon to remote driving conditions. By you rparticipation, you volu ntarily assu me fu ll responsibility forthese damag es, risks, and dang ers. T ake care at all timesto protect you rself and those u nder you r responsibility.
Mu ch of the T hree Rivers Rang er District is remote.Medical assistance may not be readily available. Cellu lartelephones do not work in many areas of the T hree RiversRang er District. Take adequ ate food, water, first-aidsu pplies, and other equ ipment appropriate for theconditions and expected weather.

P arking
Dispersed CampingMotor vehicle u se off of desig nated roads and/or trails for the pu rpose of dispersed camping is permitted onN ational Forest Lands for u p to 300 feet from the centerline of the road and/or trail. Campsite selection m u st be completed by non-motorized means, and then accessed by the most direct rou te withou t cau sing resou rce damag e. Cu tting , damag ing , or harming (su ch as driving over) trees or veg etation is not allowed to access dispersed camping spots. (CFR 261.15) It is prohibited to operate any vehicle off N ational Forest S ystem, S tate or Cou nty Roads in a manner which damag es or u nreasonably distu rbs the land, wildlife, or veg etative resou rces. (CFR 261.15(h)) Moving , g oing arou nd or over or past barriers on roads (i.e., g ates, rocks, berms, barriers, sig ns, etc) is not allowed. (CFR 261.12) In all developed recreation sites su ch as developed campg rou nds, picnic sites, trailheads, boat lau nches, etc., it is prohibited to operate or park a motor vehicle or trailer except in places developed or desig nated for that u se. (CFR 261.16 (m))
Motor vehicles may be parked u p to 30 feet from the edg e of the road su rface when it is safe to do so withou tcau sing damag e to N FS resou rces of facilities, u nlessprohibited by state law, a traffic sig n, or an order. (36 CFR 261.54)
S easonal Desig nation:T his symbol, u sed in conju nction with one of the other road ortrail symbols, indicates that the road or trail is open only du ringcertain portions of the year. Refer to S easonal and S pecialDesig nation Table for fu rther instru ctions.

It is the responsibility of the u ser to acqu ire the cu rrentM V U M.T his M V U M shows the N ational Forest S ystemroads, N ational Forest S ystem trails, and the areas onN ational Forest S ystem lands in the T hree Rivers Rang erDistrict that are desig nated for motor vehicle u se pu rsu antto 36 CFR 212.51. T his M V U M also identifies the vehicleclasses allowed on each rou te and in each area; and anyseasonal restrictions that apply on those rou tes and inthose areas. Desig nation of a road, trail, or area for motor vehicle u seby a particu lar class of vehicle u nder 36 CFR 212.51shou ld not be interpreted as encou rag ing or inviting u se orimplying that the road, trail, or area is passable, activelymaintained, or safe for travel. Motor vehicle desig nationsinclu de parking along desig nated rou tes and at facilitiesassociated with desig nated rou tes when it is safe to do soand when not cau sing damag e to N ational Forest S ystemresou rces. S easonal weather conditions and natu ralevents may render desig nated roads and trails impassablefor extended periods. Desig nated areas may containdang erou s or impassable terrain. Many desig nated roadsand trails may be passable only by hig h-clearance vehiclesor fou r-wheel-drive vehicles. Maintenance of desig natedroads and trails will depend on available resou rces, andmany may receive little maintenance.
