Now in its third year, the NE1 Zapcat Grand Prix returns to the Tyne for a spectacular weekend of racing on August 30 and 31.

Part of the UK Grand Prix series, events take place from 12.15pm-5.30pm on the Saturday and 10.15am-1.45pm on the Sunday, including the final race of the NE1 Zapcat Grand Prix on Sunday, charting a challenging course between the Tyne and Millennium bridges.

Zapcats are lightweight inflatables with a sportscar-standard power-to-weight ratio, which allows them to reach 50mph and execute tight turns which lift the hull out of the water at 90 degrees. The final race on Sunday will be followed by a presentaiton ceremony at the NE1 Quayside Seaside at 3.30pm. Quayside, August 30-31, free www.getintonewcastle.co.uk

COOL FOR CATS

FOOTIE FOCUS

The new football season is imminent and I’m looking forward to it with some optimism, what with the NUFC company credit card getting a pasting with the summer signings.

We can rule out a run on the title thanks to the competition spending money like Victoria Beckham in a silly hat shop, but the new signings are promising and I believe the club has tried to make amends for the atrocious end to last season. Maybe we’ll add a decent striker too. Who knows?

Even though we’ve been handed the short straw with a home game against Manchester City to start the campaign, the first five/six games of the season are generally against teams we’ll be battling for the upper-mid table positions.

I’d now like to see a reversal of our negative attitude towards domestic cup competitions; there aren’t any excuses for non-existent cup runs at Newcastle.

I’d also like to see more progression from the reserves into the first team. For some it will be their last chance and they have to ask, ‘do I want to play in front of 52,000 every other week, or am I happy running out in front of a crowd akin to a Debenhams sale?’.

As Lloyd Grossman used to say in his strangulated vowels, “gentlemen, it’s oiver to you”[email protected]

EVERYONE’S TALKING ABOUT

IN MY DAY...Remember The Mayfair? What about The Tuxedo Princess? Certain members of the team here at NE1 HQ do, and were delighted (…mostly) when we came across Newcastle Uncovered, giving them the chance to reminisce about the good old days and explain to certain members of the team (*coughs* Dean) how amazing these nightspots were. Oh, what it is to be young!www.facebook.com/NCLuncovered

GET RUNNINGIt’s that time of year again and training is in full swing (for some at least) ahead of the Great North Run on September 7. Ahead of the event, which this year will see its one millionth finisher cross the finish line in South Shields, the iconic Bupa Great North Run signage has been erected on the Tyne Bridge - inspiration for the runners and the rest of us to get our trainers out of storage. www.greatrun.org

LIGHTNING STRIKE WORTH 1,000 WORDSFireworks and man-made lightning strikes will light up the Quayside as part of the Great North Run Million Opening Ceremony on September 4. Alchemy will provide the pyrotechnics while Lords Of Lightning will harness 4m volts of electricity to send lightning bolts across the Quayside. The event will also feature music from Mark Knopfler, Chase & Status, and The Unthanks. Spectacular!Quayside, September 4, www.gnrmillion.org

Side Gallery’s new exhibitions tell two very different stories, some 100 years and more than 5,000 miles apart.

Photographer Hiromi Tsuchida’s exhibition Hiroshima documents everyday items which survived the Hiroshima blast in 1945, while the pictures in the show War Work tell the story of WG Armstrong, who founded his Elswick works in 1847 and developed the breech-loading gun in 1854. I WENT TO…

ANDY GREEN, 39, TRANSPORT ENGINEER, NEWTON BY THE SEA

I regularly make the trip to Newcastle as my wife and I enjoy shopping at Eldon Square and visiting the restaurants in

town. I also enjoy going to the Tyneside Cinema and The Stand. I’ve seen some great comedy in the last few weeks.

LOUISE MAY, 22, STUDENT, HEATONI went with my friends to the Life Centre to go see the Body Worlds exhibition and it was brilliant. It was really interesting and

studying bio-medical science at university, I found it quite useful.

SUSAN WILKINSON, HARVEY SOUTHERN AND BRIAN WILKINSON

We’re through Newcastle every other weekend with our grandson, there’s so much to see and do. He loves going to

the Hancock museum and that’s where we’re off to today. We all enjoy looking through the different exhibitions.

French artist Marine Hugonnier is set to present her fascinating film study of a bee colony at Baltic.

Shot in Austria, Apicula Enigma (trans: The Bee’s Riddle) takes a complete break from traditional nature documentaries. There is no narrative, instead, the film shows a sequence of events as they happened. The artist exposes the process of production, revealing the camera, sound recording equipment, and crew to show how the colony and its activity mirror the world as a whole. The original jukebox musical Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story stops off at the Theatre Royal in August as part of its 25th anniversary tour.

Seen by more than 22m people worldwide since it opened in London’s West End in 1989, Buddy tells the story of the musical icon’s meteoric rise to fame and his final legendary performance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, before his death at the age of 22.

With more than 20 of his greatest hits including Oh Boy, That’ll Be The Day, Peggy Sue, and Rave On, the show also features Big Bopper’s Chantilly Lace and Ritchie Valens’ La Bamba. Rock ‘n’ roll!Theatre Royal, Aug 4-9, from £12, www.theatreroyal.co.uk

OH, BOY!

It’ll come as a surprise to many, but American punk icons Dead Kennedys are still going, albeit with a modified line-up, and they bring their unique punk sound mashed with traces of surf, rockabilly, spaghetti western, psychedelic rock, and garage to Newcastle in August.

Check your vinyl collection, and there’s a fair chance Dead Kennedys’ album Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables or the single Holiday in Cambodia is in there somewhere. Either that, or readers of a certain age will have pogo-ed to it. Punk lives!O2 Academy, August 11 www.o2academynewcastle.co.uk

DEAD KENNEDYS RESURRECTED

TODAY I’M LISTENING TO...

JOHN DODDS, 67, NEWCASTLEI listen to all sorts of music from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Right now I’m listening to Rockin’ All Over The World by Status Quo

but my favourite musician to listen to has to be Dean Martin.

KATHERINE LOUISE BLACKWOOD 24, FORMER STUDENT NEWCASTLE

Today I’ve been listening to a lot of No, No, No – they’re a Swedish indie band I’ve recently come across. Usually I like to

listen to indie-synth pop bands such as The Jezabels.

JENNIFER BLACK, 33 MAITRE D’, NEWCASTLE

On the way to work I’ve been listening to a random selection of songs from 70s soul to the Top 40. I really like Sam Smith at the

minute his single Stay With Me is what’s on my phone right now.IM

COMEDY

DEAN BAILEY ASKS COMIC TONY LAW SILLY QUESTIONS

No excuses for grumpy faces, folks; the month-long Newcastle Alternative comedy festival is a marathon comedy extravaganza which’ll put a smile on the face of even the most determinedly bad-tempered among us.

Comics including Danny Bhoy and Phill Jupitus have already been and gone, but big names still to come include Josie Long (Aug 9), Stewart Lee (Aug 10), and Tony Law (Aug 12).

We caught up with Law, who heads to Edinburgh to deliver no less than 24 gigs after sampling his Festival act here.

His is one of more than 150 gigs during Newcastle Alternative, so there’s something for everyone. Enjoy!

You’re meeting somebody for the first time. How do you describe yourself?Look for the man who cuts his own hair (the truth is, my daughter does it) What do you have for breakfast?Half a grapefruit and an orange, followed by muesli with yoghurt, a power juice and three raw eggs. After that I go for a run. Not really! In actual fact, I don’t eat breakfast at all. The kids get me up at the crack of dawn so I tend not to sleep at all anymore. That

tends to make breakfast a tough one for me.

What’s your most embarrassing moment on stage?Every single time I step on one.

How would your best friend describe you?*Shouting across to his wife while in the park: She says funny…that’s a good start… clever… and a bit of a dick. Ah.

Best/most bewildering heckle? In Belfast somebody shouted ‘I see you’ in a particularly broad Irish accent. To which I replied, ‘well done’.

What makes you laugh?Surprise; a twist at the end of a story.

What’s your favourite record?Rasputin by Boney M. Obviously.

What would your superpower be?Time travel.

What would your catchphrase be?Banter.

What’s your take on Newcastle? It’s great; there are enough nerds and freaks here for me.
