Bethel’s Big BBQ Extravaganza

On Saturday August 24th, the Bethel church family, led by the Men of Bethel, held their annual church barbecue. This event was an extraordinary success and went off without a hitch. We were not only able to enjoy some great food (thanks to Zach Thompkins) but we met some folks outside of our church family as well. The weather could not

have been any more perfect as the sun was shining and the birds were singing. The men want to send a special thank you to those members who not only purchased a meal (or two...or three). Without your support, this event would not have been successful. It would be remiss to fail to thank anyone else who helped with this event. Whether you ordered the food, bought the barbecue sauce, set up the tent, prepped the meat, portioned out the side items, bought advertisement signs, secured the bounce houses, took the money, designed the barbecue flyer, set up the kitchen, cleaned up the kitchen, or just made telephone calls to encourage people to come and get some great food, I say "thank you". I would just like to say how appreciative I am of all the hard work and effort so many of you have put into making our move to our new location a success. We have really come a long way in a short period of time. It is my hope that we can slow the pace some and focus more on the mission that has been set before as stated by Jesus in his Divine Commission to the disciples, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations. Baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world." Matt 28:19-20

Blessings,

A Touch of Inspiration “Helping Hands”

A mother, wishing to encourage her son's progress at the piano, bought tickets to a performance by the great Polish pianist Ignace Paderewski. When the evening arrived, they found their seats near the front of the concert hall and eyed the majestic Steinway waiting on the stage. Soon the mother found a friend to talk to, and the boy slipped away.

At eight o'clock, the lights in the auditorium began to dim, the spotlights came on, and only then did they notice the boy - up on the piano bench, innocently picking out "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star". His mother gasped in shock and embarrassment but, before she could retrieve her son, the master himself appeared on the stage and quickly moved to the keyboard.

He whispered gently to the boy, "Don't quit. Keep playing." Leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left hand and began filling in the bass part. Soon his right arm reached around the other side and improvised a delightful obbligato. Together, the old master and the young novice held the crowd mesmerized with their blended and beautiful music.

In all our lives, we receive helping hands - some we notice, some we don't. Equally we ourselves have countless opportunities to provide helping hands - sometimes we would like our assistance to be noticed, sometimes we don't. Little of what we all achieve is without learning from others and without support from others and what we receive we should hand out.

Sunday School Bible Bowl Competition : Part 2

On Friday, July 28th, 2013, members of the Sunday School Department traveled to St. Charles, IL to attend the 4th Episcopal District AME Church Christian Education Congress: Youth Edition. With much pride and enthusiasm we took Bethel's very own 2013 North District Division I and Division II Bible Bowl championship

teams to compete in the 4th District competition. Our Division II team (Blake Fischer, Micah Fischer, Olivia Suggs) won an impressive second place in the competition. The Sunday School leadership along with parents and coaches are very proud of our youth for all of their hard work and dedication.

Reflecting Back Annual Promotion Day Ceremony

By Annette Suggs, Sunday School Superintendent

On Sunday, August 25th, 2013 we held the Annual Promotion Day Ceremony. This ceremony marks the unofficial end of our summer activities, the beginning of the new academic school year, a celebration of youth and adults committed to studying God's word, and a transition of youth to the next higher class level of study.

Promotion Ceremony was presided over by the Superintendent Suggs, opening hymn "Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross" sung by Samantha Suggs, welcome address given by Alexandra Glenn, youth steppin' dance led by Jeremy Thompkins, and finally certificates were presented to all youth, adults, teachers and leaders of the Sunday School Department. Youth, Andrew Brannon was promoted from the Beginners Class to the Intermediate Class which is led by Sis. Teresa Granger.

Born July 11, 2013

Rev. Albert Tyson III, Presiding Elder of the Chicago Conference of the A.M.E. Church, joined us on Sunday, August 25th, and preached a dynamic message, "Hope Thieves". He said there are many who want to rob us of our hope, but we must not be deterred.

During Morning Worship Service, the Nathaniel Sweat scholarships were awarded and a special Youth Room dedication took place to honor Nathan. His picture now hangs outside the Youth Room. The proud parents of the scholarship recipients accepted their certificates. Nathan will always be remembered and will continue to be a special part of Bethel.

The Computer Guy By Archie Skates

“Wireless Networking Basics II”

In the last issue The Computer Guy discussed Wireless Networking Basics as we continue the Computer Safety Series. This month we will continue the wireless networking discussion by giving a few more basic wireless tips. As great as Wi-Fi is, they do give others the ability to access your personal network. The last issue talked about running a firewall as well as

encryption. This month I wanted to give a couple more simple tips to help secure your network. Most of today's routers walk you thru these steps during the "read & click" installation. As much as high speed Internet cost, you shouldn't have to worry about someone streaming movies or playing games on your dime. Having unauthorized users can cause performance issues and pose a security risk. Here are a few basic ways to lock down your router. The first thing you do when setting up your router is to set up the user account, which is Admin (by default). Your router is protected by a username and password which allows the user to monitor and change the router settings. by not changing the default "admin account" and making a strong password you can provide a simple and well know tool for hackers. So change these setting immediately if you haven't. Password encryption should be the first thing anyone with a wireless router knows. Never. never leave your router open without a password. There are very few reasons for wireless users to not encrypt wireless signals with WPA2 security. This is such an important topic that we discussed in more detail in last issue's introduction to wireless basics. Routers all use a network name called the SSID. Manufacturers normally ship their products with the same SSID set. For example, the SSID for Linksys devices is normally "linksys." True, knowing the SSID does not by itself allow your neighbors to break into your network, but it is a start. More importantly, when someone finds a default SSID, they see it is a poorly configured network and are much more likely to attack it. Change the default SSID immediately when configuring wireless security on your network. Now that you have changed the SSID, you need to turn off broadcasting. The router typically broadcasts the network name (SSID) over the air at regular intervals. This feature was designed for businesses and mobile hotspots where Wi-Fi clients may roam in and out of range. In the home, this roaming feature is unnecessary, and it increases the likelihood someone will try to log in to your home network. For example, you name your network "BETHEL" You know what the wireless name is (also called SSID), so you can easily enter the SSID into any devices you want to access that network. Other people, however, do not need to know the SSID. To prevent outsiders from seeing your network's name turn off broadcasting in your router's settings. This capability is typically found within the wireless router settings page in the router's management software. Enable MAC address filtering. Each router possesses a unique identifier called the physical address or MAC address. Access points and routers keep track of the MAC addresses of all devices that connect to them. Routers offer the owner an option to key in the MAC addresses of their home equipment, that restricts the network to only allow connections from those devices. Any device not on the list will b blocked. Disable "Guest" networks, as most of the new routers now ship with wireless network configured for guests to access your router. A guest network lets guests share your Internet connection without giving them access to shared files and devices on your private network. Guest networking is often used by businesses to provide customers courtesy access, but I recommend home users turn it off. Guest network passwords are sometimes configured with no security, or default passwords that anyone can easily look up on Google if they know the kind of router you have. If you are friend enough that I give you permission to share my router, you are friend enough to know my passphrase key.

The last tip - which is not actually a router issue but one that affects laptops, pads and phones - I know most of you are going to say, I need this option, to get free Wi-Fi, especially if you are a young person, but the tip is the tip. Do not Auto-connect to open Wi-Fi networks. Connecting to an open Wi-Fi network such as a free wireless hotspot or your neighbor's router exposes your computer to security risks. Although not normally enabled, most computers have a setting available allowing these connections to happen automatically without notifying you (the user). This setting should not be enabled except in temporary situations and you are aware of the network you are connecting to.

As stated in the last issue, I have listed a few basic steps to take. Most of today's routers have built in protocols, that are set up when you complete the installation and they will walk you thru the same steps mentioned above to secure your home network. Since wireless networking has become common place, almost everyone is using them, and many are not even aware of the security risk involved. Make sure you educate yourself on the risk involved with wireless networking. Wireless networking done correctly is a great way to access the Internet, and can make your computer experiences more pleasurable.

Your router manufacture's website as well as other websites, have plenty of information on wireless networking and security. Good luck and remember the “Computer Guy” articles try to make readers aware and provide brief information on computer technology. “How Many Hours Of Sleep Are Enough?” By Mayo Clinic Staff

Question How many hours of sleep are enough for good health?

Answer from Timothy Morgenthaler, MD

The amount of sleep you need depends on various factors -- especially your age. Consider these general guidelines for different age groups:

Age Group Recommended Amount Of Sleep Infants 9-10 hours at night, plus 3 or more hours of naps

Toddlers 9-10 hours at night, plus 2-3 hours of naps

School-age Children 9-11 hours

Adults 7-8 hours

In addition to age, other factors can affect how many hours of sleep you need. For example:

“How Many Hours Of Sleep Are Enough?” By Mayo Clinic Staff

- continued from previous page -

** Pregnancy - Changes in a woman's body during early pregnancy can increase the need for sleep. ** Aging - Older adults need about the same amount of sleep as younger adults. As you get older, however, your sleeping patterns may change. Older adults tend to sleep more lightly and for shorter time spans than do younger adults. This might create a need for spending more time in bed to get enough sleep, or a tendency toward daytime napping. ** Previous sleep deprivation - If you're sleep deprived, the amount of sleep you need increases. ** Sleep quality - If your sleep is frequently interrupted or cut short, you're not getting quality sleep. The quality of your sleep is just as important as quantity. Although some people claim to feel rested on just a few hours of sleep a night, research shows that people that sleep so little over many nights don't perform as we'll on complex mental tasks as do people who get closer to seven hours of sleep a night. Studies among adults also show that getting less or much more than seven hours of sleep a night is associated with a higher mortality rate. If you experience frequent daytime sleepiness, even after increasing the amount of quality sleep you get, consult your doctor. He or she might be able to identify any underlying causes -- and help you get a better night's sleep.

Money Matters By Jim Julian,

Financial Consultant “To Roth Or Not To Roth”

We have covered in the past that everyone needs to set aside on a regular basis some savings for long term benefits. A goal that everyone should have is a savings account that would cover a minimum of 3 months of living expenses but 6 months would be even better. That account would protect you in the event of a medical issue that kept you from

working or even if you lost your income for some reason. Recall this would be a “put and keep” account. Once that cushion is in place the next step would be to begin thinking about retirement for those of you that are not already there. For those of you that have an opportunity to participate in an employer retirement plan such as a 401(k), a 403(b), or a 457 you need to participate as much as you can. Look to see if the employer will make a matching contribution based on your participation and, if so, you should enroll at whatever level it takes to get the maximum employer contribution. It may not be possible to do that initially however make sure you increase your contribution in steps to get to that level. Usually a 1% or 2% increase will not be too difficult to manage but the goal is to get to that level at a minimum. Try increasing your contributions every time you get a raise.

Page 8: Pictured Above: The hanging of Nathaniel Sweat’s picture ...bethelamenoblesville.org/ESW/Files/Sep-Oct_Newsletter_V1I5.pdf · Vol. 1 : Iss. 5 Sept. – Oct. 2013 Pictured Above:

Money Matters By Jim Julian,

Financial Consultant “To Roth Or Not To Roth”

Page 8

- continued from previous page - A lot of 401(k) plans today are allowing the employee to make their payroll

deduction contributions as either regular pre-tax or as an after-tax Roth. These are two very different options with major long term effects that you should strongly think about. The regular pre-tax contributions are made out of your income BEFORE your payroll taxes are determined. Since your contributions are made BEFORE any taxes you in essence save the federal, state and county income taxes on your savings. Depending on your income tax status that saving can be anywhere from 0% up to 20%. However since you have not paid any income taxes on your money going into the 401(k) plan everything coming out in the future will be taxed. Remember that the IRS is NOT a charitable tax free entity. Uncle Sam will want the taxes sometime, hopefully, many years down the road. Once you reach age 70 ½ there’s also something called the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) which requires you to start taking taxable distributions so you cannot totally avoid the taxes.

That’s where the Roth plan can be of benefit. Whereas the regular 401(k) contributions you make are pre-tax, the Roth contributions do not receive the payroll tax savings up front. With the Roth you have already paid the income taxes on your contributions and therefore when you decide to pull your money out, you can receive that money back income tax-free. If you leave your Roth money in the plan until you reach age 59 ½ or 5 years if later, then not only can you get your own deposits back tax-free but you also get any earnings on those contributions tax-free.

Remember that I’m talking ONLY about your contributions and how they are taxed in the future. Any contributions by your employer and earnings on those contributions will always be taxed as well as effected by the RMD rules. Roth accounts within the 401(k) are not affected by the RMD rules.

One planning idea to consider is if you are contributing enough to get the maximum employer matching contribution, other than the payroll tax savings, there is no other reason to increase your salary reduction above that level. For example if your employer matches 50% of your contribution up to 8%, making an additional 2% contribution will not gain you anything more other than the additional payroll tax savings. Consider taking that 2% and open a Roth IRA account for the tax-free growth if you keep it long enough.

Send me a note at [email protected] if you have any questions.

THE CHAT with Bethel’s Youth

The Wilson Family News

Brady Allen Wilson is the 11 year old son of Heather Wilson. Brady recently moved with his family and started the 5th grade at Hinkle Creek Elementary over the summer. Any day, Brady is about to welcome his brother, Mehkai Travis Hampton into the world and become the best big brother. During Brady’s spare time, Brady enjoys hanging out with his friends, playing video games, reading and playing basketball. During the winters, Brady partic-

ipates in basketball through a Christian sports program at White River Christian Church. Brady is currently reading The Action Bible and has become quite engaged with the stories in the bible. Within the past year, Brady has assisted the usher board in collecting tithes and offerings on youth Sunday. Brady really enjoys the new church location and is excited to come weekly.

Exciting Opportunity YPD Annual Youth Night & Conference

Theme: Staying Strong through Adversity, 1 Timothy 4:12

Mark your calendars for Friday- Saturday, Sept. 20-21. Your youth will not want to miss this

opportunity to worship and praise the Lord! Indiana YPD Conference needs the help of each area (Fort Wayne, Gary, Indianapolis,& Jeffersonville) to help praise the Lord during the Youth night worship service. We would like to have representation from each area to use the above theme to be lifted up; it can be through testimony, skit, monologue, poem, song selection, spoken word, artistic expression, etc... The program will be no longer than 90 minutes so we will only need one representation from

each area praising the Lord in different worship capacities.

Bethel’s Kitchen Carrot Cake

By Brianne Williams

For the Cake:

2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 2 teaspoons baking soda 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon ground allspice ¾ teaspoon salt 3 cups grated carrots 1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts 1 cup shredded coconut (sweetened or unsweetened) ½ cup raisins 2 cups granulated sugar 1 cup canola oil 4 eggs

For the Frosting: 8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature 4 ounces (½ cup) unsalted butter, at room temperature 1 pound (3¾ cups) powdered sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Directions:

1. Position the racks in the oven into thirds and preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Grease and flour three 9x2-inch round cake pans. Put two pans on one baking sheet and one on another. 2. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, allspice and salt. In another bowl, stir together the carrots, chopped nuts, coconut and raisins. 3. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the sugar and oil together on medium speed until smooth. Add the eggs one by one, and continue to beat until the batter is even smoother. Reduce the speed to low and add the flour mixture, mixing only until the dry ingredients disappear. Gently mix in the chunky ingredients. Divide the batter among the three baking pans.

4. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, rotating the pans from top to bottom and front to back at the midway point, until a thin knife inserted into the centers comes out clean; the cakes will have just started to come away from the sides of the pans. Transfer the cakes to cooling racks and cool for about 5 minutes, then run a knife around the sides of the cakes and unmold them. Invert and cool to room temperature right side up. (The cakes can be wrapped airtight and kept at room temperature overnight or frozen for up to 2 months.) 5. To make the frosting: Beat the cream cheese and butter together until smooth and creamy. Gradually add the sugar and continue to beat until the frosting is velvety smooth. Beat in the vanilla extract until well-combined. 6. To assemble, stack the layers, spreading a generous amount of frosting between layers and then cover the top and sides. Garnish and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Books Of All Sorts

Bethel is beginning to put together a bookstore that all can enjoy but we need your help. We need books! Surely you have a few gently used books collecting dust in a corner that could be donated to the bookstore for the enjoyment of others, after all the best stories are those that are passed along! Since we are starting from the beginning we need all kinds of books…children’s, young adult, fiction, non-fiction…anything you have enjoyed and wish to pass along. The hope is that the store will be a lending library/take one leave one format for all to enjoy. Books can be brought in and dropped off any Sunday you would like and once there are books we will open the doors! If you have questions please see Eunice Collins or Tracy White…thanks for your help!

As you can see, there is a lot going on at Bethel. Most of the pages are covered with "good news" about our youth. That is something to praise God about and be proud of. Keep them in prayer; they could be somewhere else. Please support the upcoming events that have been planned and you should plan to be a part of them all! Keeping you informed,
