Graduate Spotlight

My name is August Howerton and I attended PCC after graduating from high school. After two years at PCC, I earned my Associates Degree in Science and transferred to East Carolina University.

Due to the small class sizes, I was able to form personal relationships with my teachers. The teachers at PCC are one of a kind; caring, knowledgeable, and dedicated to their students. My favorite aspect about the teachers at PCC is that they will not rest until they know their students understand the material. Going to a community college for two years was the best option for me because it allowed me to become accustomed to college level work and the freedom associated with college, without the expenses of a four-year college or university.

The transfer process to ECU was extremely easy. PCCs dedicated advisors worked with me to make the transfer as painless and seamless as possible. It also helped that PCCs classes all transfer to universities and is easily verified through the NC Course Equivalency document.

Altogether, PCC was a wonderful stepping stone in preparing me for college life. If I had not gone to PCC, I would, without a doubt, not be able to handle the workload and liberty of college life. So, to those of you who are considering PCC as the next step in your education, I strongly urge you to go to community college. If it worked for me, it will undoubtedly work for others.

Ways to take

CLASSESFace to faceTraditional face-to-face classes are offered on the Person and Caswell County campuses. These classes are ones in which the instructor meets with the class every session. Traditional face-to face classes are offered during the day, evening, and weekend.

OnlineOnline or distance education classes are those that are not 100% traditional face-to-face classes. Types of distance education classes include online, telecourses, video conferencing, information highway, and web enhanced.

HybridA little of both. A mixture of face-to-face and online classes. It’s a great mix if you still want in person interaction with your instructor but need the flexibility of an online course.

Students who are new to online and hybrid courses must complete the self-paced Distance Education Student Orientation Course. This course provides instructions on how to get started with online courses and provides tips

and resources for being successful within the online learning environment.

Students will be notified to self-enroll in the Distance Education Student Orientation Course at the time they register for their first online or hybrid course at PCC. Students should be able to self-enroll with 48 hours of completing registration. Completion of the orientation course is mandatory.

The Distance Education Student Orientation Course is available through Blackboard.

• Distance learning courses allow students to work on their own time rather than report to class at a particular time.

• Travel time and expenses are greatly reduced.• Distance learning courses allow students to

work from home or office.

• Students who prefer written communication may do well in distance learning courses.

• Students may get to know faculty and other students on a deeper level in an online course since many are more inhibited in a classroom setting.

I believe that my time at PCC contributed significantly to my acceptance into Cornell. People are always amazed to find out that I was not a transfer student, but actually transferred courses that I took during high school as part of the dual-enrollment program.”

JACKIE MONTOYAAfter completing an internship at Ariel Community Care in Caswell County for her Human Services Technology degree at PCC, Jackie Montoya was asked to join the team as a Peer Support Specialist. Jackie accepted the position, knowing she had only one more semester at PCC – all this while raising her two sons as a single mom. At PCC’s 2017 graduation, Jackie’s cap read, “She believed she could so she did.”

Jackie is now enrolled in the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s Social Work program. “PCC helped give me confidence in my abilities especially being back in school at an older age. You are never too old to chase your dreams!” she shared.
