Millions of years agoThe Earth rises up from the depths

Millions of years ago, silence was broken by

intense explosions and bursting bubbles as

the Earth roared fiercely. The depths of the

Atlantic shook with volcanic activity as the

flowing lava created new landscapes. This

marked the beginning of the westernmost

part of Europe: the Canary Islands.

For centuries, volcanic eruptions have trans-

formed landscapes across the planet, leaving

behind ashen, majestic and captivating beau-

ty. These volcanic soils currently represent only 1% of the Earth’s surface. The

energy released by the eruptions resulted in the Canary Islands archipelago

and its tremendously rich and complex earth.

The lava and ash accumulated since the Tertiary Period have given the wines

made in this land a complex character with fresh and persistent flavours. Ex-

ceptional wines with a limited production that hide the secrets of the depths

of the Earth.

What lava createsLife reaches Tenerife Island

Layer upon layer of hardened lava, ris-

ing as high as 3,718 metres, gave life to

Tenerife Island and its crown, Mount

Teide.

The fruit used to make our wines orig-

inated under the shade of this volca-

no that has erupted 13 times over the

past 2,000 years and remains active.

It gives unique features to the soil (po-

rosity, water absorption and nutrients),

affecting the vines and consequently

the wines made from them. This unique

landscape is home to Piedra Fluida Winery, a reflection of this fiery earth.

Its geographic location and volcanic origin determine the complexity and

structure of these vineyards, the colour hues and the aroma of the fruit. The

impact of microclimates on crops gives each wine certain characteristics and

a unique expression that can vary by distances as short as a few kilometres.

Grapes originating from fireWine harvest heroes

The roots of our vineyards can be

traced back to fire, smoke and lava. Our

unique local varieties, such as Listán

Negro and Listán Blanco, offer different

flavours. The singularity of this land en-

abled these grape varieties to survive

the phylloxera plague that devastated

European vineyards in the 19th century.

These pre-phylloxera vines exist in very

few places around the world.

The area from the peak to the slopes of

Mount Teide is home to an ancient and

rich wine culture that is today known as heroic vine-growing. The vines grow

high above sea level on traditional or trellis systems along steep and narrow

stretches of land where humans play the role of heroes on harvest days. Our

winery’s philosophy melds with its surroundings through sustainable practic-

es, traditional farming and nurtured soil. We combine innovation and modern

approaches with sustainability and a traditional interpretation of wine.

Exceptional grapes and winesPiedra Fluida Winery

Piedra Fluida Winery started out with the 2018

harvest, when it set up the facility, current-

ly located in La Orotava, to process grapes

from the vineyards it had been purchasing

in the Santa Úrsula municipality since 2016.

Felix Becker, the winery’s German owner,

adores Tenerife and is firmly committed to

the island’s heroic vine-growing approach

with the aim of keeping alive the old vine-

yards and local varieties in order to make

unique, limited-production wines.

The winery has two production areas along northern Tenerife, 500 to 600 me-

tres above sea level, that are meticulously looked after to extract the best fruit.

Becker continues to explore the island in search of old, singular vineyards in

order to expand his production efforts.

Lord of WinesGabriel Morales Francés - Oenologist

Our winery expert Gabriel Morales ad-

vises us throughout the winemaking

process, from the moment the grapes

reach the facility and until the finished

product is bottled. Morales (26 Septem-

ber 1972, La Laguna) holds a bachelor’s

degree in Agricultural Engineering from

the University of La Laguna (1997) and a

master’s degree in Viticulture, Oenology

and Wine Marketing from the Technical

University of Madrid (1999).

He has worked as an oenologist at vari-

ous designation of origin wineries, including El Grifo Winery in Lanzarote, Sier-

ra de Guara Winery in the Somontano D.O. (Huesca), Domínguez Cuarta Gen-

eración Winery in Tacoronte-Acentejo, and the Hoyos de Bandama Winery

and Finca Justus Frantz in Gran Canaria. He has also participated in harvests

for the Peter Yealands Estate Winery in Marlborough (New Zealand). Morales

owns a company specialised in winemaking projects (Dprovit) and advises a

number of businesses, including Piedra Fluida Winery.

The man behind the Piedra Fluida imageRichard Fuchs, contemporary artist.

Fuchs is a German artist born

in 1972 and whose works have

been on display in exhibitions

and art galleries throughout the

country. He is friends with Felix

Becker and is equally in love with

the island. He lends his talent to

Piedra Fluida, creating unique

designs that convey the singular

features surrounding the wines

that emerge from molten earth

and ash. Inspired by the colours,

aromas and history behind each

wine, the artist comes up with ex-

citing designs to decorate every

bottle.

Piedra Fluida RedNature, tradition and effort

A cherry-coloured wine with violet edges. Medium depth.

It has a complex nose, with a combination of red fruit, bal-

samic aromas, spices and a hint of smoke. In mouth, this

wine is fresh, full-bodied and persistent, yet easy to drink.

It will evolve accordingly in the bottle at least during the

next six years.

LISTÁN NEGRO 90%, LISTÁN BLANCO & TINTILLA 10%.

Listán Negro is the traditional grape variety grown exten-

sively throughout the region thanks to its rustic nature and

adaptability to local vine-growing conditions. Its roots can

be traced back to the Canary Islands, created from a cross

between the Negramoll variety (of Portuguese origin) and

Listán Blanco (of Andalusian origin). This grape variety

with a medium growth cycle is suitable for young wines,

but when grown in the appropriate region, it also becomes

a perfect candidate for ageing. The resulting wines have a

clear volcanic nature and a strong personality.

Piedra Fluida WhiteNature, tradition and effort

A complex wine with a straw-yellow colour, medium-high intensity aromas, and hints of orange blossom, rose, fen-nel, laurel and toasted bread, the latter due to being aged in barrels on lees. In mouth, this wine is fresh, balanced and perfectly acidic. It will evolve accordingly in the bottle at least during the next four years.

ALBILLO CRIOLLO 80%, LISTÁN BLANCO 20%.

Albillo Criollo, a traditional variety from the Canary Islands, is originally from the island of La Palma. Since it shares genes with the Verdello variety (possibly of Portuguese or-igin) and the Canary Islands Listán Blanco (of Andalusian origin), it could be a cross between the two. With a medi-um-short growth cycle, it ripens one or two weeks before the Listán Blanco variety. It reaches a medium degree of alcohol content, with high levels of total acidity. The re-sulting wines are fresh, complex and usually evolve well in the bottle. Due to its acidity and alcohol content, it adapts exceedingly well to fermentation or ageing in barrels.
