Pier 21Pier 21 is a big building in the Halifax harbour where people who were coming to Canada had to get checked to make sure they could stay in Canada. It opened in 1928 and closed in 1971. Now it is like a museum where we can learn about what it was like in the past.Sketches done by Mercedes at Pier 21 class visit April 16 2003
Immigration Table Customs officers checked everyone here and asked them questions to
make sure it was safe to let them into Canada then stamped their passports.

This is where the men and women had to get approved by the immigration people so they could get into Canada (On the benches the men sat on one side and the women sat on the other. ( When we sat on the benches there were voices in
other languages coming from a speaker under the bench so we could hear how it sounded.). By Tessa
We watched a movie on a big long screen inside the model of a ship. It was in 4D because the pictures had length, width, and depth and they also
went through time like ghosts fading in and out. We saw families, children alone sent away from war, and brides who had married Canadian
soldiers during the war and the women were coming to meet their new
family and live here in Canada
