So wHo aRe PIGeon & weaSel?

The story of Pigeon and Weasel begins with two housemates living in a little brick terrace in Sydney, Australia. Pigeon, a graphic designer who spent his time between being hungover and looking at a computer screen. And Weasel who was forced to spend too much of her meagre Primary school teachers wage buying candles to cover up Pigeon’s beer odour.

Many hours of reality TV inspired Pigeon and Weasel to dream of doing something creative that would take the world by storm.…only problem was that they had no idea about what to do. The best idea was ‘Hoorayonnaise’ which is a whole other story.

Then one day towards the end of 2011, Weasel was given a candle making kit by one of her Year 3 students. Rather than re-gift this at secret santa. Weasel acted as any appreciative teacher does, and embraced her gift.

Weasel enlisted the help of her trusty housemate Pigeon and together they got to work making their first candles - one honeydew and one bacon scent. They were over scented, ugly, the wicks were off centre and they didn’t burn properly!

We were so proud of ourselves that we burnt the candles constantly. Weasel made sure the bacon one lived in Pigeon’s room as it made her feel sick. Pigeon still believes there is a market for bacon smelling candles!

The next step was to make candles for our friends and family, but what to put them in? Pigeon refused to make grandma looking candles in glass jars but it was then that Weasel noticed the over supply of empty beer bottles lying around the house, especially after a weekend of Pigeon’s mates visiting. A bit of research on Youtube showed the duo how to cut these bottles in half and the first batch of signature Pigeon and Weasel candles was born!

From that moment, things expanded quickly. On the weekends we would go to bars and raid their bins for bottles. The bins were full of insects, cigarettes butts, and …Pigeon! There was no way Weasel was putting her hands into those bins. People looked strangely at us with our headlamps on, but we were on a mission.

The first candles were packaged in the most labour intensive method ever devised - brown paper bags stuffed with shredded paper. The shredder kept jamming, the bags kept ripping, and Pigeon’s short temper was being tested.

We bought a tent, wine barrel and chalkboards and went to the markets. We turned up at 6:30am every Saturday and stood around in the sun all day, trying to sell our melting candles. We would earn enough to pay for the site and buy some lunch. Not exactly awesome.

However, despite this, something very special was happening…online. People were finding our candles not at the markets, but through our website! People responded to our personalities being reflected in the product and it soon got to the point where far more people were buying candles online than at our market tent.

To meet demand we bought large melting pots, and bulk wax and scents. At the end of the day Pigeon and Weasel would rush home from their day jobs to work on candles. Weasel spending hours a night perfecting candle production, while Pigeon created boxes, websites, logos and any other odd jobs that Weasel came up with.

As our brand grew we started getting enquiries from retail stores. This was an exciting moment for Pigeon and Weasel as we no longer had to spend our weekends sitting in the rain or heat at markets!

That was 2012. A lot has changed from those early days. We no longer make candles in our kitchen but we still make all our candles ourselves, by hand, right here in Sydney, Australia. Our packing has become slick and professional, and we have nailed our recipe. In fact we think we have the best burning, and smelling candles available!

While Pigeon and Weasel continue to grow, some things will never change. We still love making candles and seeing all the different ways people style the finished product. Pigeon still drinks a lot of beer, and Weasel is still dead against a bacon scented candle.

Both Pigeon and Weasel are passionate about this small business and we honestly believe we are two people with the coolest job in the world, making the best candles!

Pigeon = clayton

Weasel = Prue

Together we are Pigeon and Weasel.

Before lighting your Pigeon and Weasel candle you should always trim the wick. Your wick should be cut to 1/2 cm for optimal burning time. If you do not trim your wick the wax and inside of the jar will begin to discolour.

How do I GeT wax oUT oF THe caRPeT?

In the unfortunate situation that you knock over your Pigeon and Weasel candle onto to carpet, don’t stress. Allow the wax to set. Once it has set simply get some paper towel and a iron. Place the paper towel over the spill and with a warm iron rub over the top of the mark. continue until all wax has been absorbed.

dIFFUSeRS

How oFTen can I TURn THe dIFFUSeR ReedS?

It is completely up to you with how often you turn your diffuser reeds. For a stronger scent turn the reeds daily, for a more gentle scent turn the sticks every few days. If any of the diffuser liquid gets on your skin we recommend that you wash it off to avoid skin irritation.
