Eleven Mile Canyon is our local gem. Any seasoned angler will agree that the South Platte River in Eleven Mile Canyon is the place to go for unparalleled beauty. Eleven Mile Canyon is also the place to go if you just want to catch a fish. Per mile, this stretch of river seems to consistently hold more fish than any other river within an hour’s drive from Colorado Springs. It’s the place to go to get into one of the various beautiful species of trout that call the South Platte River home. Brown Trout, Rainbows, and Cutthroat Trout are plentiful and offer the fly fisher a good day of action.

The Arkansas River below Pueblo Reservoir is an amazing winter tailwater fishery. Even though it is a tailwater, flows below the dam can get dangerously high during spring runoff, so be careful wading. This stretch of river is known for being a nice urban fly fishing destination. There is a public restroom at the parking area near Valco Ponds and the city of Pueblo is only a ten-minute drive away, with its full complement of restaurants and stores. You’ll need to purchase a parks pass in order to use the Valco Ponds parking lot.

Page 11

Arkansas River

The South Platte River below Spinney Reservoir is known to most local anglers as the “Dream Stream.” This tailwater doesn’t have many holdover fish and is subject to high wind speeds and inclement weather. The spring and fall have been the Dream Stream’s saving grace because of the spawns. Large rainbows and cutthroat trout move into the river in the spring, and large brown trout and kokanee salmon move in during the fall. There is no camping next to the river; however, there are several great campgrounds downstream along Eleven Mile Reservoir.

South Platte River

The South Platte River at Deckers was devastated by debris in 2002 from Colorado’s largest fire in its recorded history, followed by two huge floods. Since then, Deckers has been making great progress toward recovery and the debris left over from the fire and floods is being used by caddis for making their cases. in 2013, Deckers seemed to really

turn the corner, and many anglers commented that it was the best fly fishing season since the fire. The caddis have taken over the river the last few springs. Caddis hatches that rival the famed Arkansas River’s Mother’s Day Hatch have happened in Deckers the last four years and it’s showing no sign of slowing down. When the fish aren’t coming up to caddis, a tandem nymph rig with typical fare can still be deadly. The summer months can be a lot of fun for anglers that are into throwing streamers and big dry flies. Deckers is also a great winter fishing destination because it is a tailwater fishery, with consistent flows coming out of Cheesman Reservoir. Consequently, during the winter months, the water temps are just slightly warm enough to stay relatively free of ice all year. Sections where the sun hits the water is where you can find feeding fish.

Cheesman Canyon

Cheesman Canyon is one of the most technical and rewarding tailwater fisheries in Colorado. A half-hour hike from Gill trailhead through some hilly terrain gets you to the base of the canyon where the trail splits into a high road and low road. This stretch of the river is catch and release only and is known for holding large rainbow trout. Almost the entire length of the river that runs through this gorgeous boulder-filled canyon is loaded with deep pocket water and fast runs that provide different challenges depending on where the fish

are located. Most of the time the fish are hanging close to undercut boulders and other structure. Give yourself time for the 20-minute hike to the river and to take on the different challenges as you work your way along this beautiful river.

Beaver Creek above Penrose cuts its way down to the Arkansas River with most of its water pumped into Brush Hollow Reservoir. Most of the stream traverses through a rugged canyon known as Beaver Creek State Wildlife Area. The lower access to the canyon is through Penrose, Colorado. Temperatures in the summer often exceed 100 degrees, so it is best to head in early, take plenty of water, and wear protective clothing and sunscreen. The lower canyon is carved through red rock and wading the stream is often the only access. The trout are mostly cutthroats with a few brown trout. Some good patterns are hoppers and caddis.

Chalk Creek is a creek flowing east from the Collegiate Peaks mountain range in Chaffee County, Colorado. Mt. Antero borders the southern side of the creek, while Mt. Princeton borders the northern side. The headwaters are located at the boundary of the Continental Divide. Chalk Creek empties into the Arkansas River at the town of Nathrop, Colorado. The creek is named after the magnificent white kaolinite cliffs that stand at the entrance to the Chalk Creek valley and are a result of hot springs deposits. These white cliffs are visible for miles in all directions and stand in stark contrast to the otherwise wooded surrounding mountains. Stands of aspen trees and evergreens of various species surround the creek for its entire length. Chalk Creek is home to several species of fish, including the brook trout, cutthroat trout, brown trout and the rainbow trout. There is public access throughout the canyon, but fewer anglers can be found above St. Elmo.

Beaver Creek below Skagway is a sizable stream year-round. Its headwaters start from the top of Pikes Peak. The section below Skagway Reservoir is a long, gentle meadow that runs almost 3 miles before it drops into an untamed, un-trailed, harsh canyon. Few venture into this region. The meadow section does receive more adventurers because of its beauty, easy access, and fishing opportunities. This is a great place to take beginner fly fishers with runs, pools, and an ample supply of cutthroat trout.

Tarryall Reservoir is a popular spot with the locals because of where the lake sits. The reservoir is off the beaten path. Tarryall is a no fee reservoir, which means there is no payment for camping or fishing. It does have a boat ramp, so boating is allowed which includes kayaks and belly boats.

There are a few hiking trails and ATV trails around the reservoir which give a great opportunity to see the abundance of wildlife around Tarryall. Fishing is good there year-round, from the shore and boats. Ice fishing is very good there as well in the winter. The main species in the lake are trout, which include rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout. If you want to catch something a little toothier, you’re in luck- Tarryall has some great northern pike fishing as well!

Spinney Mountain State Park is an ideal place to get away. Spinney Reservoir is designated gold medal water that produces good numbers of large trout and pike. Spinney is known for using the fly rod out of a float tube. It is also a great lake for kayaking, boating and wading. Wading must be done with waders on because Spinney is a supply for drinking water so there can be no body contact with the water. Trolling in a boat or casting from shore can be very productive for the trout and pike. The backdrop of the Rocky Mountains that drops in to the South Park valley makes Spinney a beautiful place to go. There are nearby camping and picnic areas. Spinney is normally open between April 10th and November 25th. Always be careful of the weather that can arise very quickly in the South Park Valley. The 2,500-acre lake can be very beautiful, but can become very violent in a short amount of time when the rain and the windstorms blow through.

Pueblo Reservoir is a very popular fishing spot in Colorado. This lake provides over 4,600 surface acres of water and about 60 miles of shoreline. Pueblo has many warm water species of fish, among them are walleye, wiper, bluegill, crappie, channel catfish, flathead catfish, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, Kentucky spotted bass, and yellow perch. The lake has the McConaughy rainbow trout as well. There are many campgrounds in the park, including handicapped accessible camping spots as well. All vehicles are required to have a parks pass while in the park. They do allow

jetskis, waterskiing, and sail boating. Belly boats, canoes, and kayaks are allowed also. There are great picnic areas and restrooms all around the lake. There is an abundance of wildlife and breathtaking views in many different parts of the lake.

Skagway Reservoir sits at the bottom of a canyon. Just east of Victor, Colorado, Skagway is a favorite fishing spot for the locals. There are rainbow trout and pike to be caught in this little reservoir. Skagway is a no-fee lake so there are no fees for camping or fishing.

The reservoir is a great place to bring the family and pets to run around and have a picnic or a nice hike. While its green background with blue skies are very beautiful, the valley becomes even more beautiful in the fall with the groves of aspens that turn golden and bright red. Skagway has a lot of history that surrounds the reservoir from the gold mining days. Boating is allowed on Skagway and there is a boat ramp that offers easy access. Belly boats and kayaks are a very popular way to navigate. There is a small hiking path that wraps around this reservoir, but there are a few difficult spots on it that can be a problem for some.

Antero Reservoir has a surface area of about 2,500 acres. It is a shallow lake that produces large trout. Because of the shallow water, there are a lot of weeds that produce an ample food source for the fish that inhabit the lake, thus allowing the fish to grow to large sizes very quickly. Most of the fish found in the lake are trout, however, Kokanee salmon can also be found in Antero. The reservoir is an excellent place to do some boating, trolling, belly boating and kayaking. Wading the shoreline throwing lures or the fly rod is a very productive way to fish Antero. The reservoir sits in the middle of the South Park valley and is surrounded by the Rocky Mountains. There are some nice campsites at the lake and two boat docks at either end of the lake. As you are fishing or boating it is always a good idea to keep an eye on the weather. The wind can come up rather fast here and lightning is a very real danger on this wide-open lake. Antero is pet friendly and is easily accessible for people to walk around.

Rampart Reservoir

Rampart Reservoir sits just outside Woodland Park - only a 45-minute drive from Colorado Springs. This region is a popular recreation destination with the locals. All of the camping areas are close to the water and all of them have fire pits. There is a great path that goes all the way around the reservoir. Many locals love to mountain bike or hike around the reservoir. Rampart is 508 acres so it does take some time to make it all the way around. Fishing is very good at Rampart with many species to catch: rainbow, brown, cutthroat, and lake trout. Rampart allows hand launch boats, belly boats, kayaks, and canoes.

Eleven Mile Reservoir is a very beautiful lake that sits in the 3,400 acres of Eleven Mile State Park. The reservoir has over 350 water-front camping and picnic areas. Showers and laundry facilities are available during the summer camping months. The mountain range that surrounds the reservoir is breathtaking. There are deer,

antelope, and elk in the area along with eagles in the sky. Eleven Mile Reservoir is also home to many species of fish. There are rainbow, brown, cutthroat, and cutbow trout along with large pike and the quick kokanee salmon. The reservoir is an ideal place to do some boating, trolling, kayaking, float tubing and has great conditions to do some sailing and wind surfing. You must wear waders or wet suits, as there is no body contact allowed in this water. Eleven Mile Reservoir is open year-round so you can boat it in the summer and ice fish it in the winter. Fishing from the shore is the most popular way to fish the reservoir. Easy access from the parking areas to the lake makes it a great place for the elderly and handicapped to enjoy.

Rampart Reservoir

If you’d like a day at the lake to kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddle board, Rampart Reservoir is the place to go. The reservoir rests at a high 9,000 feet of elevation, and is relatively large with a surface area of 500 acres. One thing that makes this spot particularly exciting is its unique shape, which provides many coves to explore and picnic at. This and the surrounding beauty make Rampart one of the favorite boating, fishing, hiking, biking, and picnicking areas in the region. The area surrounding the lake is currently being restored from the Waldo Canyon Fire of 2012 which makes this area less traveled and less busy. Boatman’s picnic ground is a great little place to check out as well as the 12 other picnic spots that are accessible only by boating, hiking or biking to them!

Just north of downtown Woodland Park, CO is Manitou Lake. Manitou Lake is a large park with a fishing lake, picnic grounds, and walking trails. For locals, if you refer to “Manitou” you are referring to the town of Manitou Springs located down the pass. If you say “Manitou Lake” you are referring to the place known as Manitou Lake Picnic Grounds. The small Manitou Lake is a 5-acre reservoir fed by Trout Creek. At an elevation of 7,700 feet, the terrain is a combination of grassy meadows and ponderosa pines. Visitors have a beautiful view of Mt. Deception across the lake. The paved Centennial Bike Trail can be accessed from the picnic area and a hiking trail loops around the lake. The trail connects to nearby Painted Rocks, Colorado, and South Meadows Campgrounds. The area is great for canoeing, kayaking, hiking, fishing, biking, and snowshoeing. A grassy meadow allows for plenty of outdoor activities. Dogs are allowed but must be on leash at all times.

Seven Bridges is a popular trail in the Cheyenne Canyon. The trail follows a nice mountain creek with seven wooden bridge crossings along the way (thus the name). It can be a fun activity to take a picture of the family on each bridge! On sunny weekends this trail can be very busy and social, so if you like more solitude in

your hiking, go on a weekday. To hike the trail, after you reach the 180 degree bend on the road look for the Trail 622 marker on the right. Shortly after you cross the first bridge, there will be a trail off to the right. This is the Buckhorn Cutoff Trail that goes up to Capt. Jacks Trail. Enjoy this hike through the canyon as you continue over all seven bridges. After about a mile and a half you will reach the last bridge. After taking a break, and dipping your feet in the water, you can choose to go back or continue onto Jones Trail. Check the Colorado Division of Wildlife (page 55) to make sure this trail is open as there has been flood damage that has led to closing in the past.

Pikes Peak

Make sure you bring:

More water than you think you’ll need, first-aid kit, emergency blanket, water-proof clothing, extra food, matches or lighter, extra layers of warm, dry clothing, sunscreen, comfortable hiking boots, and a camera.

Climbing Pikes Peak (14,115 ft high) is an incredible experience, whether you are an avid mountain climber or this is your first fourteener! There are two most popular ways to get to the summit; however, they are each difficult in their own way. The most important thing to know when climbing the Peak is to be prepared. The regular afternoon thunderstorms are unpredictable and roll in fast. As soon as a storm approaches, get off the mountain as soon as possible. Hypothermia and lightning are very real dangers and shouldn’t be taken lightly. Another thing to consider is the possibility of altitude sickness. Make sure you get acclimated first if you are traveling from out of state. Being prepared will make your trip more enjoyable and far safer. Below is a list of items we suggest bringing with you on your hike. Remember to bring a camera when you embark on this hike as you will have incredible views of many different landscapes on your way to the summit.

Pikes Peak Both Routes

From Barr Trail . . .

This is one of the most popular ways to climb Pikes Peak. At 12.5 miles long with an elevation gain of 7,400 feet, this hike is not for the faint-of-heart. Hikers typically summit in around 8 hours, give or take s few hours depending on ability and length of breaks. We recommend starting at first light and aim to be off the mountain by noon to avoid thunderstorms. The trail starts with a series of switchbacks up Barr Trail, eventually leading to Barr Camp at mile 6.5 where you can rest and stay the night if you’d like. After Barr Camp you will approach treeline and eventually the 16 “Golden Stairs” which take you to the summit. Enjoy this hike and make sure to stop and enjoy the view every once in a while!

From the Crags . . .

This way to summit the Peak is much shorter at 6.8 miles, although still very steep with an elevation gain of 4,200 feet. This is a favorite way to hike as it is much less crowded, provides better views of the continental divide, and takes less time. Start at the Crags Trailhead and climb through the forest, ending up at the interesting Devils Playground (named for the way the lightning bounces from rock to rock during storms). After that, cross the Pikes Peak Highway (2 miles left), and go through a large boulder field, following cairns through the rock maze until you finally reach the summit. Stop by the gift shop and have a donut before heading back down!

Page 42

Incline

Manitou Incline The Manitou Springs Incline is the most unique and one of the most popular “trails” in the area. The incline started as a cable car track to take tourists up the mountain, much like today’s Cog Railway the trailhead shares a parking lot with. Since its closing in 1990 and the removal of its rails, locals have been climbing the stairway of the leftover wooden ties. Many climb the steep (average 40% grade) 1 mile trail for exercise and a feeling of accomplishment. This trail is not for the faint-of-heart or out of shape, however there is Bailout Point at about .6 miles where the Incline comes close to Barr Trail, creating a convenient way to go back down if you are unsure you can make it to the top. The view from the top is incredible and well worth the hard work. Most people come down Barr Trail after reaching the top.

North Slope

North Slope Rec Area

The North Slope Recreation Area consists of several trails on Pikes Peak, many of which surround the three reservoirs. This area is a local favorite as it is close to the city but still a great mountain getaway. Many of the trails offer great views of Pikes Peak to the south. Just one of the many trails on the North Slope is Mackinaw Trail. This trail follows the contours of North Catamount Reservoir before connecting with other trails. This is an excellent spot to take a family for a picnic to get away from the crowds and enjoy nature. Just be careful for mountain lions as they are known to inhabit the area. There is an entrance fee of $4 per person to visit the North Slope, and it is well worth it as the views and activities are excellent!

The Crags, named after the interesting rock formations nearby, is a beautiful and popular hiking spot, great for families and individuals alike. The trail starts with a few steep switchbacks and soon enters a gorgeous meadow with the “crag” rock formations on the left. The trail in this area is relatively flat and very pretty. To reach the top of the crags, take the trail up through the forest which will leave you with excellent views of Pikes Peak and the surrounding mountains.

Cheyenne Dome Rock State Wildlife Area

Dome Rock State Wildlife Area is located about halfway between Divide and Cripple Creek. A network of trails is available throughout the area including connecting trails to Mueller State Park, just north. The main feature the area is named for is the huge granite Dome Rock located in the west part of the area. This spectacular hike will take you through canyons, past numerous rock outcroppings, beautiful meadows, a creek with beaver dams, and more. In the fall, you can enjoy views of Pikes Peak and huge golden aspen groves. The trail starts by following a creek down a narrow canyon. You may have to cross this stream a few times once you reach the beautiful open meadow with beaver dams. After about 2.3 miles you will reach the remains of Jack Rabbit Lodge, a great photo spot. After another 2.3 miles, you will reach the overlook of the Dome Rock itself. This is great place for a picnic and a turning point for a 9 mile round-trip trail. Another option is to do the full loop via Spring Creek Trail, which offers incredible views of fall aspen and Pikes Peak.

Garden of the Gods is a must-see when visiting Colorado Springs. It is famous for its unique red rock formations, especially the Kissing Camels and Balanced Rock formations. The park is very popular and can often be crowded on summer weekends, so weekdays and evenings can be great times to enjoy the park and avoid the crowds!

Page 47

Garden of the Gods continued . . .15 miles of interconnected trails for hiking and mountain biking wind through the rock formations and the park. Hikers can find several picnicking spots with tables throughout the park – most surrounded b y picturesque views of the Garden of the Gods.

A visitor center, free and open to the public, is home to a café, gift shop, and nature center.

A favorite trail is the Chambers/Bretag/Palmer trail, which is a 3-mile loop with less than a 250-foot rise. This rolling trail is great if you want to circle the entire park and see the formations but also get away from the majority of the traffic.

Eleven Mile State Park

Eleven Mile State Park is one of the most popular areas in the state for camping and recreation. Nine campgrounds offer a wide variety of camping areas and styles, whether you like to be secluded or have all the comforts of home. Rocky Ridge Campground offers the only electrical sites in the park and is nestled among trees and rocky outcrops. The North Shore and Witchers Cove Campgrounds offer open lakeshore sites and convenient access to boat ramps. The Stoll Mountain, Howbert Point, Lazy Boy, Rocking Chair and Cross Creek Campgrounds are all more secluded and less crowded, but they also tend to be more exposed to the often-changing weather conditions. There are also over 20 wooded, secluded backcountry sites which are great for those who enjoy packing or boating their supplies in to their sites. There are toilets, showers and laundry facilities at the camper services building; however, they are closed from Oct. 1 to May 1 each year. The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife including deer, black bears, and more.
