DESCRIPTION

How did Pikes Peak form in the Colorado Rocky Mountains?

TRANSCRIPT

Page 2: Pikes peak, colorado

Pikes Peak was created over billions of years through several earth processes. Batholith Creation Deposits of Sediment Thrust and Uplift Erosion and Weathering Glacial Movement

Batholith formation

The batholith that is today’s Pikes Peak was formed when magma rose through the earth’s crust but did not breach it. The magma cooled, creating an igneous rock : granite.

Sediment Formation

Sediment deposited at the bottom of a shallow sea provided the base for the ancestral Rocky Mountains.

Uplift

The sediment was then uplifted, creating the ancestral Rocky Mountain range. Pikes Peak was lifted as well, but the granite was buried under layers of softer rock.

Glaciers

Glaciers movement transformed the rock into Pikes Peak. You can see the force with which they carved into the mountain by the abrasions left behind.

Weathering and Erosion

This view from Pikes Peak Avenue shows that the view has not changed much in recent history, I like to imagine that the picture on the right shows a little more erosion on the ridges.

A Mountain Above…

Creating mountains is no easy feat. Many forces come together to shape the

magnificent peaks that many of us take for granted.

If we were missing any step they would not look the same.

The world around us is constantly changing, moving, eroding, sculpting.

Pikes Peak is a tribute to earth processes in action.
