MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

Happy fall, ladies. Welcome back! As always, summer probably

flew by for all of you but hope you made some great memories.

Now we can all get excited about another great year of PPN activi-

ties and friendships. I know I am. I have a great Board to work

with, skilled, enthusiastic and already making plans for your enjoy-

ment. We recognize with many thanks these industrious & dili-

gent ladies who put in many hours to help us have a successful

year.

We’ll be voting at our September luncheon on our annual budg-

et and also our Ways & Means Committee-suggested charities for

this year. Remember our monthly luncheon fee of only $20 (with

an exception for the May Fashion Show) includes not only your

lunch, but tax, tips, beverages & sometimes a room fee. Finally, IF

you have NOT paid your dues yet, please sent them to Member-

ship Chair, Marva Lewis, so that you can be in our new PPN Direc-

tory. Now let’s get ready to enjoy, make new friends & help some

deserving local charities.

We play regularly two times a month. The first

Monday and the third Friday. However, in Sep-

tember the first Monday is on Labor Day and we

will not get together. We meet next on Septem-

ber 15th. For time being we will always meet at

Marva Louis' house at 3018 Drakestone Dr. Jean

Meyer will be co-hostess. We meet at 10:00

and everyone brings a lunch. We really enjoy

teaching new players because it is so much fun.

So, please give Marva a call if you would like to

Thank you ladies for supporting the two PPN charities last year (2016-2017): $2,788.50 was

given to each of our charities, Safe Place for Pets and Colorado Springs Rescue Mission for

a total of $5,577. The Philanthropic Subcommittee of Ways and Means met in August and

selected charities to propose for next year (2017-2018). PPN members at large participating

included Sarah Calkins, Joan Godbey and Jean Meyer; thank you to all ladies who attended.

The two proposed charities Urban Peak and Colorado Springs Therapeutic Riding Center at

Mark Regner Stables and were approved by the PPN Board at the August Board meeting.

Now, YOU please attend the September PPN luncheon at Edelweiss Restaurant to vote

your support for these charities: Both charities have websites and literature will be on each

September luncheon table for your information. This is not only important, it is also fun!

To raise funds for these charities, we will again be offering opportunity gifts at the lunch-

eons. Opportunity gifts should have a value of at least $10. The ladies bringing items to the

September luncheon are Pam Ecks, Pat Gotsill, Marilyn Pattison, Judie Snook, and Jennie

SEPTEMBER 13TH LUNCHEON AT EDELWEISS 10:00 AM

Our Guest Speaker is Dr. Ruthi Manning-Freeman Program by Peg Gardner Ruthi Manning-Freeman comes to us as a highly credentialed educator for the Academy School District 20. Her background includes a Lib-eral Arts Degree in Philosophy with an emphasis in elementary education, a Masters in Educational Leadership, and a Doctorate in curricu-lum and instruction with an emphasis in Gifted Education from the University of Denver.

This hard work and her remarkable life experiences have led her to combine her work with students and teachers with her life-long love of the arts.

Ruthi’s knowledge and interest in opera has been developing for the last eleven years. She works with the New York Metropolitan Opera

as part of their National youth outreach program. In this role, she mentors other school leaders as they create programs to promote the

art of opera to American youth across the country. Joining Ruthi is Laurel Camarano, who found her true calling when she started teaching

academics by correlating learning to the arts and found working with gifted students truly resonates within

her heart and spirit. Laurel earned her Gifted and Talented Endorsement at Hardin Simmon’s University after

graduating with a degree in Education with an emphasis in Music from Baylor University. This well-traveled

Air Force brat is skilled in the flute, saxophone, piano and has competed in state-wide vocal quartet competi-

tions.

Ruthi and Laurel’s program will give us an insider’s peek at the way this outstanding program is influencing

students in our community and the way fun and new interests are used to redirect some of the thrill of tech-

nology and its devices to our youth. They will bring props and ‘tricks of the trade’ to let each of us share this

program and possibly create a new interest in opera or a return to the love of the musical story.

Massenet’s Cendrillon, a retelling of the Cinderella story, will help us see a new side to a favorite childhood

fairy tale and will tell us how to see this Opera ‘HD Live’ with ‘behind the scene’ interviews and performances

by actual Metropolitan singers, actors, and dancers.

PEOPLE YOU NEED TO KNOW

MARGOT THOMAS by Margie Desormeaux

Margot Jane Love met Carlisle John (Jack) Thomas while in collage and they later married. They have two daughters with two children

each. Both families live in California.

Margo taught high school math for 10 years and after was a substitute teacher for another 20 years. Jack joined the Navy and became

the Captain of a minesweeper.

Being a Navy couple, they began what was to become a lifetime of travel. In fact we can now call them our official Globe Trotters as to

this date they have traveled upwards of 120 trips around the world. Visiting China stands out in her memory as being very special be-

cause of the culture. It was like no where else to her.

Another trip that stands out was to Thailand, while enjoying that country, a war broke out and gunfire was heard in the streets daily.

Planes from many countries came to pick up their travelers but before any arrived from America, the airport was closed. Margo and Jack

where stuck for several weeks more in this utterly frightening place. Finally the fighting stopped without any changes in the Thai govern-

ment and they were able to take a Singapore Airlines flight out and landed in Singapore on their way home.

Margot and Jack celebrated their 50 years of marriage by returning to all the places they had lived starting with Japan where they had

spent two years. Margot says she can’t remember all the places they had once lived now but probably 12 or 13.

Margot is a soft spoken gal with a smile that lights up her whole face. She is very laid back and I suspect nothing could make her unravel.

She loves being a member of Pikes Peak Neighbors and has held most offices in the past. For the last 10 or more years, she has been

head of the Hospitality Committee and is looking for someone to take over so she can try being a committee member for a change. Get

to know Margot a treasured member.

They continue to travel overseas at least twice a year and more within the states including the many trips to California to see their girls

and families. Below is only a portion of their destinations. I could not fit them all on this page.

Follow-up to our June Program at Amanda’s Fonda

The 7 th annual Latina Voices will be held on Saturday, Sept. 30th at Library 21C, 1175 Chapel Hills Drive.

The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. and the program starts at 10 a.m.,

ending at noon. Refreshments are provided and the entertainment includes many talent-ed Latinas. In

addition to our June program favorite, Debra Gallegos, who will accompany Yolanda Or-tega - there will

be a digital storyteller who has been featured on NPR, and an educator speaking about “Family

Dreams

for Education”. Hope to see you there.

RACE TO THE AUCTION: ON YOUR MARK…

Race out now to start putting your baskets or items together. You may prefer to offer a

function in your home, yard, clubhouse or racetrack. You can put a race team together and

everyone contribute to a basket or function. We are looking forward to your exciting efforts

no matter what you race! If you have a large item to offer, please let Pam know…condo,

Hello to all Pikes Peak Neighbors. I have taken on a new position, the membership chairman. This

position possibly is over my pay grade because it includes the use of spreadsheets which is new to

me. However, as I move on, I need to let everyone to know that as of this date I have 71 members

paid up and 33 members from last year that have not paid. All members need to pay the dues by

22 September in order to be included in the directory. So I am asking everyone who haven't yet

paid to send a check to me at 3018 Drakestone Drive, C/S 80909. I will also be taking the dues at

the September 13th Luncheon at the Edelweiss Restaurant. Hope to see a lot of members on Sept.

13th.

I believe that the circles of women around us weave invisible

nets of love that carry us when we're weak and sing with us

when we are strong. Let’s lean back and let the arms of womens

friendships carry us and help us to know ourselves better, and

live our lives together
