2.ReproducetheMayflowertemplateontobrownconstructionpaper.Makeonecopyforeachstudent.

Procedure
1. RemindstudentsthattherewereboyandgirlPilgrimsontheMayflowerandattheFirstThanksgiving.
2.Tellstudentsthattheyaregoingtopracticemakingpatterns.
3.Invitevolunteerstocometothefrontoftheroom.Givethevolunteersapattern(suchasboy,boy,girl,girl,boy,boy,girl,girl )andhavethemstandinalinetodemonstratethepattern.
4.Whenstudentshavearrangedthemselvescorrectly,encouragetherestoftheclasstosaythepatternaloudwithyou.Walkdowntheline,pointingtoeachchildasyousay,“Boy,boy,girl,girl,boy,boy,girl,girl.”Thenask,“Ifwewantedtocontinuethispattern,whoshouldbenextinline—aboyoragirl?”Invitestudentstosharetheirresponses.
5.Repeatsteps3and4usingdifferentpatterns(suchasboy,girl,boy,girlorboy,boy,girl,boy,boy,girl )untilstudentshavedemonstratedanunderstandingthatpatternsarearrangementswitharepeatingorder.
Independent Practice
1. TellstudentsthatyouwouldlikethemtopracticemakingtheirownpatternsusingpicturesofboyandgirlPilgrims.

2.GiveeachstudentasheetofPilgrimboys,asheetofPilgrimgirls,andbothpagesoftheMayflowertemplate.Promptstudentstocolorthepicturesandcutthemout.(Foryoungerstudents,youmaywanttocutoutthepicturesaheadoftime.)
3.Provideeachstudentwithabluesheetof12"x18"constructionpaper.
4.Instructstudentstoturntheirsheetssidewaysandgluetheshiptothebottomoftheirsheet.
5.InstructstudentstoarrangethePilgrimboysandgirlsinapatternalongthetopoftheboat.Thenhavestudentsgluethepicturesinplace.
6.Displaythecompletedartworkonabulletinboardtitled“MayflowerVoyage”or“PilgrimPatterns.”
