From the ancient Greek goddesses Athena, Artemis and Gaia to women of the New Testament and finally present-day nuns in Greek monasteries, this pilgrimage will focus on the influence of women on the spirituality and history of Christianity. Lydia, Euodia and Syntyche are women named by Paul as partners in ministry in Philippi. Phoebe, Priscilla, and Junia are named as leaders in the church and in the city. Our Greek guide, Aliki, will delight you with her vast knowledge and stories. Our educational director, Christine Schenk, CSJ, will share the stories of great women in the early Church. Our spiritual director, Russ Petrus, will help participants prayerfully reflect on the lives of our foremothers in faith and the meaning of their contributions for both women and men in the church today.

ITINERARYDays 1-2 (October 5-6) Thursday and Friday: fly from U.S. to Thessaloniki. Upon arrival in Thessaloniki (Acts 17) we check in at our hotel, have dinner, and rest. At Thessaloniki we remember a group of young women, led by Agape, Eirene, and Chione, martyred there in the early fourth century.

Day 3 (October 7) Saturday: The next morning we continue to Philippi, a Center of Paul’s early ministry, where Lydia (Acts 16) led a house church and Euodia and Syntyche (Phil. 4:2-3) were probably among the episkopoi and diadonoi. Return to Thessaloniki overnight.

Day 4 (October 8) Sunday: After a short tour of Thessaloniki, we drive south to Vergina, with its treasures of gold from the tomb of King Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, and learn about the burial of Macedonian queens. On a short stop at Verria we remember Paul’s visit there (Acts 17:10-14). Overnight in Kalamabaka.

Day 5 (October 9) Monday: The hilltop monasteries of Meteora draw us where we will visit one of the women’s monasteries. Chris will offer insights into 4th century monastic women. We will then continue our drive south to Delphi, one of the most breathtaking sites in Greece, where thousands of visitors sought guidance from the holy woman, called the Pythia, who spoke on behalf of the gods. Overnight in Delphi.

Day 6 (October 10) Tuesday: We visit the site and museum of Delphi with its famous sculptures, then continue our drive and arrive in Athens, which will be our home for the rest of the journey. On one evening during our stay, we will dine at a restaurant that recreates the menu of the fifth century BCE.

Day 7 (October 11) Wednesday: Today our journey takes us to Corinth, where Paul first met Priscilla and Aquila (Acts 18:1-3), an extensive archeological site. We will have a short stop at the seaport of Cenchreae where Phoebe the deacon lived (Rom 16:1-2).

Day 8 (October 12) Thursday: A short ferry ride takes us to the lovely island of Aegina, home of our tour agent Yannis. Here we will see the little temple of a relatively unknown goddess, Afea, thought to have been a model for the Parthenon. We will also visit another women’s monas-tery, St. Nectarios, dedicated to the most recent saint in the Orthodox Church, with its large new church to receive pilgrims.

Day 9 (October 13) Friday: This morning in Athens we visit the Acropolis with its Parthenon, sanctuary of the goddess Athena, the Areopagis, and Agora of ancient Athens, with free time in the afternoon to visit museums or to shop. The final dinner will be on the rooftop of our hotel.

Day 10 (October 14) Saturday: Depart for home more aware of the gift and influence of the New Testament women who lived and ministered in this land and helped shape early Christianity.

Airline Tickets Some Considerations

Making airline reservations is a fairly simple process, but if you need help, you may want to contact a local travel agent. You will also want to consider if you want to purchase flight insurance in case you cancel for any reason.

You will fly into Thessaloniki. There are a number of routes to Thessaloniki through Athens, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, etc., so you will have choices. On the final day of the tour, you will depart from Athens.

If you want to look at reservations on any online site, you’ll want to choose a multi-destination flight.

October 5, 2017: Fly from YOUR CITY to THESSALONIKI (SKG) (Arrive October 6)

October 14, 2017: Fly from ATHENS, GREECE (ATH) to YOUR CITY
