Grace and Peace to all you!
Lent begins March 6, 2019. In the church, we say, “This is when Jesus begins his
walk to the cross.” And some of you are going to give up coffee. Or wine. This six-
week period give us the opportunity to practice beautiful spiritual disciplines—for a
relatively short period of time. But this six-week period also gives us an amazing
opportunity to do some other amazing things!
Like belong to each other.
There are few seasons in this church that I love more than Lent. I love Advent and
Christmas and the energy. I love summer and the rest it provides from all of the
programs. I love fall and the excitement of a new program year…but Lent. Lent brings
us closer together. We get to eat dinner together once a week. We get to cook and
break bread and eat really good food and laugh and do crafts and clean up spilled
milk and wash dishes and worship and sing and pray. We get to practice belonging to
each other. And it’s beautiful. And it’s probably my favorite season here.
But this Lent, church, in the midst of giving things up and attending Wednesday
dinners, worship and life, I’d like to offer a challenge to you. I have been hearing a lot
of stories about different social and educational groups this church has done in the
past and I’m finding that all of it sounds kind of fun. Bowling! I had no idea we had a
bowling team! Ecology Club?! Geocaching?! Wine tasting?! A Hiking Club?!
A PIZZA CLUB?! When I heard lists shouted out at various times and places, the word
‘belonging’ buzzed in my head. As I sit in my office on this snowy day, I wondered what
it would be like if we took up a Lenten discipline of belonging to each other, and if part
of that discipline would be the risk of volunteering to attend or lead one of these
amazing activities?
I think if we can give up chocolate for six weeks, we can do almost anything.
I am going to challenge you. There will be a congregational interest survey sent out via
email, there will be bulletin inserts and maybe a few announcements to see if any
members or friends of the congregation would like to commit to lead a group or if
members or friends would attend. We can talk about these ideas over soup on
Wednesday evenings. We can think of ideas on Sunday mornings over coffee. We can
work on our commitment to being a community of faith, who belong to one another
and to God. And, hopefully, we can get to know others who call Pilgrim home more
deeply (and have a little fun while we are at it).
Anyone up for coffee and some cycling?
A blessed Lent, friends. As always, I am so humbled and honored to walk beside you
as your friend and fellow traveler.
With much love,
Pastor Ashley

MISSIONS Page 3
ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING—Every year at this time, we open our hearts to help people around the world with gifts to One Great Hour of Sharing. These gifts help people improve their living conditions through long-term international develop-ment projects in agriculture, education and health care. By giving, we offer shelter, food, bedding, and other assistance to people who must flee their homes. And when disaster disrupts lives, our gifts provide emergency relief for people caught in catastrophic circumstances. We will be accepting offerings through Easter Sunday. In order to reach our goal of $5,000, we will add the profit from the Lenten meals as well as the coins collected from the children during ROCK HOUR. Please use the special OGHS envelopes found in the pews. Watch our progress on the Mission board as we do MORE THAN WE CAN IMAGINE!
“Serve one another with whatever gifts each of you has received”—these words from 1 Peter 4:10 reminds us that our God-given gifts are intended for service. Today, there is a world of need. Will you give to One Great Hour?
REPAIRERS OF THE BREACH—This refuge and resource center in Milwaukee for homeless adults is open from 7am to 4pm Monday through Saturday. During the cold winter months, when the wind chill falls to 10 degrees and below, they remain open all night. Because they depend solely on donations, we asked for donations to sponsor a Night of Warmth and also asked for blankets, pillows and sleeping bags. As of this writing, we are well on our way to achieving our goal and the Narthex is filling up with your donations of pillows, blankets and sleeping bags for this vulnerable population. Thank you for your support of this project!
SAUKVILLE COMMUNITY MEAL at PARKSIDE UCC—We have signed up to provide this free meal twice in 2019 — March 23 and November 9. This month’s meal will consist of pulled pork sandwiches w/slaw, baked beans, potato salad, relishes, chips, jello and desserts. They generally serve 30-50 guests in a warm, friendly environment. We are looking for volunteers to help set up, serve and clean up between 10:30 am and 1:00 pm. We are also in need of food donations to complete the meal. Please sign up if you can help. Contact Kathy Ellenbecker, [email protected] or Donna Tredrea, [email protected] if you have any questions. We look forward to serving a delicious meal provided by members of Pilgrim.
ST. BEN’S COMMUNITY MEAL PROGRAM—St. Ben’s provides struggling Milwaukee residents with a warm meal six days a week. We have a monthly commitment of providing the dessert on the first Friday of each month. We are asked to provide at least 24 desserts. This month, our desserts are needed on Friday, March 1. Bake or buy any dessert of your choice and please have it here by noon on Friday. Pilgrim volunteers also help to serve the meal once a month. Our next serving date is Tuesday, March 12. If you have any questions about our involvement in St. Ben’s, please contact Pam Holloway, 414-429-3624. Please sign up in the Narthex if you can help out with our commitments to St. Ben’s.
MR. BOB’S UNDER THE BRIDGE MINISTRY—Donations of warm clothing, blankets, sleeping bags, personal hygiene items, new socks, underwear, towels and washcloths are always needed. Your donations are taken to Advent Church where they are sorted every Thursday night and delivered to homeless men, women and children in Milwaukee every Saturday. Our donation bin is located near the carport entrance. If convenient, we ask that you drop off your donations to Advent Church, which is located in Cedarburg directly across from the Community Gym on Washington Avenue. Sorting of clothing items takes place at Advent every Thursday evening beginning at 6 pm. Helping hands are always welcome. If you’d like to help, you are invited to just show up!
As we continue to experience an extremely severe winter, please remembers all those who are struggling. Don’t forget that many of the things we take for granted are out of reach for many.
WOMEN’S PRISON YARN MINISTRY IN UNION GROVE—Donations of yarn and cotton fabric are welcomed by these women who use them to create beautiful crocheted afghans and sewn quilts. Please place your donations near Mr. Bob’s bin marked “Yarn Ministry.”
EMPTY PRESCRIPTION CONTAINERS—A collection bin is located in Kalweit Hall for donations of empty amber RX vials. They are delivered and re-used by the Bread of Healing Clinic in Milwaukee.
Please do what you can to help others. Start with KINDNESS.
Dear Members of Pilgrim UCC: Thank you so much for your kind donation to Joyful Journeys, Inc. Your
gift of $200 again will help provide our students at Marshall School in India with the materials, facilities,
and educators they need to succeed. None of this could happen without the generous support of people
like you, and all of us at Joyful Journeys here, and in India, are so grateful.
Best regards & God’s Blessings - Joyful Journeys India Ministry
