“None of the resources that we have are our own. Our parents have invested. Our parishes have invested. And our alumni have invested.”— CHRISTOPHER

MOMINEY

Dear Friends of Catholic Education:

A s we reflect back on the accomplishments of our Catholic schools during

the 2011-2012 academic year, it is with a deep sense of pride and gratitude

that we present this fall edition of “Pillars” magazine and the Third Annual

Catholic Schools Report for the Diocese of Syracuse. It is my sincere hope

that this document will serve as a source of conversation and planning as we

think boldly about the future of Catholic education here in the Diocese of

Syracuse. These reports, published each of the last two years, have sparked

a great deal of interest in our schools and allowed for us to begin substantive

planning processes in the regions of our diocese. Since then, we have become

more intentional about our need for strong local boards, sound fiscal planning,

strategic thinking, enrollment management and increased focus on school

advancement opportunities. In short, we have begun to think about our

Catholic schools differently as we plan for the future.

My colleagues in the diocese will tell you that I am fond of saying: “None

of the resources that we have are our own. Our parents have invested. Our

parishes have invested. And our alumni have invested.” This report is meant for

our “investors”; those who support the very important mission of Catholic edu-

cation. I believe that everyone who reviews this document will see that we are

making progress in so many key areas. Still, more work must be done and we are

poised to make the changes necessary to continue on the path of improvement.

We are proud of our schools and what we have accomplished in the 2011-

2012 school year. As you review this report, I hope that you will continue to

prayerfully support our schools, our young people and the Church of Syracuse.

Peace and all good things,

Christopher Mominey

Superintendent of Schools
