Just two days after a state championship game loss, Lake Taylor senior Wayne Davis was back at work. And he wasn’t alone. He had three underclassmen with him.“He’s still doing stuff for the program because he still wants the program to be in great hands when he leaves,” Titans coach Hank Sawyer said about Davis, a four-star recruit who has committed to Ohio State. “When he’s gone, he wants to say, ‘I’ve done all I can for the program.’ ”In four seasons at Lake Taylor, Davis helped guide the Titans to a 54-4 record, including two state titles and a state runner-up finish. He capped his career with a stellar season, which earned him 2015 Abe Goldblatt All-Tidewater Player of the Year. Davis is the third Titans player in four seasons to win the honor. Davis finished his senior season with seven interceptions, five of which he returned for touchdowns. Davis also was the 2015 Gatorade Virginia Football Player of the Year.

No area girls volleyball player proved more vital and played more dominantly this season than First Colonial’s Rowan Ennis. The First Colonial senior outside hitter led her team to a surprising upset of Ocean Lakes in the Coastal Conference semifinals and to the Group 6A state semifinals.
Ennis, who signed with UC Santa Barbara, saw opponents double their blocks and devote defensive resources to slowing her down. It rarely worked.
As a sophomore, Princess Anne’s Chase Howard flashed his potential in leading the Cavaliers to their first state championship.
Princess Anne won two more state championships with Howard and Courtland Scharenborg in the lineup, creating a legacy for younger and future players to carry on. “It’s pretty awesome,” said Howard, headed to Harvard. “We’re two of the guys that made it all happen.”

Princess Anne senior Daniel Arris swam to first place in the 100-meter breaststroke in 57.67 seconds at the Group 5A state championships. Arris, who will specialize in the breaststroke at Princeton, helped the Cavaliers finish second as a team.
Daniel Arris Philip Speri
Bishop Sullivan Catholic senior Philip Speri captured the 100-meter freestyle event in 45.66 seconds at the VISAA state championships. Speri received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy.
The Best of the 757 events combine athletic testing, coaching, and showcase games for area high school student-athletes looking to display their talents and increase their exposure with college
recruiters. Over the past eight years, more than 750 athletes who have competed in previous Best of the 757 camps and showcases
have gone on to play college sports for, among other schools, the Air Force Academy, Ohio State University, University of
Maryland, University of North Carolina, East Carolina University, Old Dominion University, Indiana University, University of South Carolina, University of
Virginia, Virginia Tech, the College of William and Mary and Wake Forest University.
All athletes participate in an athletic assessment and skills camp. They will also have an opportunity to meet coaches as well as display their athletic ability.

By Larry Rubama The Virginian-PilotFirst Colonial third baseman Meaghan Barfield will be remembered for many things over her career. One opposing coach called her “the most dangerous hitter in the area.” Another said she brought fear to opposing pitchers. But there’s something Barfield will be remembered for most. First Colonial third baseman Meaghan Barfield blasted a two-run home run against Landstown to pass Turner Ashby’s Misty Hall (2003-06) and become the Virginia High School League’s career leader.Barfield, who signed with Norfolk State, was the All-Tidewater Softball Player of the Year for the second straight season and finished with 36 career home runs.
Nansemond River’s Michael Blanchard was rarely out of rhythm during a senior season in which he finished 10-2 and compiled a 1.42 ERA. He was the winning pitcher in nearly half of Nansemond River’s victories during the Warriors’ first state championship run.Blanchard, a senior who has signed with Old Dominion, is Suffolk’s first All-Tidewater Baseball Player of the Year since the award began in 1993.
