TheFirefly3isahybridmini/speedwingfoundedonasimpleprinciple:Ahighperformanceprofileinanextremelystablespeedwingplanform.Itisthemoststress-freewinginourmini-winglineupandissuitableforbeginnerandexperiencedspeedwingpilotsalikewhoarelookingforacompactanduser-friendlywingthatdeliversamassiveamountoffun.

TheFirefly3buildsonthelegacyoftheFireflyseries,withfurtherimprovementsmadetothelaunch,handling,andstability.Theadvancedprofilehasproventobeidealforhighpitchstabilityandexcellentperformanceintheclass,andthelowaspectratioandthickchordaddsprotectionforpassivesafetyandstability.Itremainsanexcellentchoiceforpilotswhowanttoexperiencethethrillofmini-wingpilotingwithoutthesacrificeinstabilitythatisinherentinhigheraspectratiodesignswhicharecommoninthemini-wingcategory.

New,lightermaterialshavebeenintelligentlyemployedtoreducetheoverallweight.Thelightersailaidsnotonlythelaunchbutalsoreducessailinertiainflightforacrisperandmoreagilefeelintheair.Inhighwinds,thewingstillhasnotendencytoovershoot,andisveryeasytocontrolandground-handle.Improvementshavebeenmadetotherisersystembyreconfiguringthetrimmerposition,allowingeasiermanipulationoftrimwithbrakesin-hand.

Newcellopeningshaveallowedforincreasedinternalpressureatacceleratedspeeds,whichaidsincollapseresistanceandimproveshandling.Anewleadingedgereinforcementhasreducedwearandtearatthiscrucialpartofthesail,withoutcompromisingleadingedgeshape.TheFirefly3alsoincorporatesanewarcatthetiphasledtoimprovedrollbehaviour,acriticaltopicforspeedflyingpilots.Whencarvingnearterrain,predictableandprogressiverollbehaviourisimportant,andtheFirefly3’sprogressivefeelisconsistentacrosstheweightrange.

AtOzone,ourmainpriorityformini-wingandspeed-wingdevelopmentissafety.Higherwingloadingdoesnotautomaticallymeanshigherstability,andwehavetakengreatcaretoproduceasmallerwingthat,whilefuntofly,stillretainsalevelofpassivesafetythatissuitableforparagliderpilotswithbeginner-intermediateskilllevels,andhigher.

The RucksackYourwingissuppliedwithaspeciallydesignedbagthatislightinweightandcomfortable.Itfeaturesapaddedhipbelt,adjustableergonomicshoulderstrapsandextrapocketstostorekeys,accessoriesandallthoseextrabits.Itslargevolumeallowsyoutostoreallofyourequipmentwhilstdistributingtheweightforcomfortablehiking.

The Atak Harness (Optional)TheAtakisaspecialharnessdevelopedforspeedwingflying.Thehang-points,structure,andpilotpositioningareallspecificallyengineeredforspeed-flyingpilots.YourAtakharnessisadjustableforuprightandsemi-reclinedflying,althoughmostexperiencedspeedflyingpilotsprefertobeinanuprightpositioninordertomovefromseatedtoskiingquicklyandeasily.

Brake LinesThebrakelinelengthshavebeensetcarefullyduringtesting.Itshouldnotbenecessarytochangethelengths.However,ifyoudochoosetoadjustthem,dosoinaprogressivemannertoensurethattheyarenotover-shortened.

RisersYourwinghas3risers.TheAriseriscoveredwithcolouredwebbing,whichmakesthemeasytoidentify.

TrimmersThetrimmersystemcanbeusedtoincreaseordecreaseyourangleofattackandalsotohelpwiththeinflationprocess.Flyingwiththetrimmersreleasedincreasesthechanceofacollapse,werecommendbecomingveryfamiliarwithyourwingbeforeusingthetrimmersystemandtoneverreleasethemwhentheconditionsareturbulent.

Total weight in FlightThewinghasbeensuccesfullyloadtestedwithoutdestructiontoabove6gwithaloadof142kgs.Donotexceedthemaxumumrecommendedweightsinflight.Choosethesizesuitableforyourususalsite,allupweightandexperience.Donotattempttoflyverysmallwingsathighloadsunlessyouhavethenecessaryexperienceandskillstodoso.

IMPORTANTIn the unlikely event of a brake line snapping in flight, or a handle becoming detached, the glider can be flown by gently pulling the rear risers (B-risers) for directional control.

IMPORTANTNever fly with your trimmers released in turbulent conditions.

MiniWingflyingisstillarelativelynewsport.Becauseofthis,youareanambassadorandrepresentativeandweaskthatyoupleasesetapositiveexampletoensurethesuccessfulfutureofthesport.Pleaseberesponsible,andpracticesafeconduct.Neverpracticeflyingonpopulatedskislopesorpistes!Itisexpresslyforbiddentoflyinpopulatedareas.Whenonsnow,alwayscarrywithyouallnecessaryava-lanchesafetyandrescueequipment.

Neverattempttoflyunlessyouhavereceivedinstructionfromacompetentspeed-flyinginstructor.

SpeedWingpilotingisdangerous.Acroflyinggreatlyincreasesthedangerandthereforeshouldnotbeattempted.Yourwingisstableinflightandloadtestedto6Gs,butwedonotrecommendflyingacro.

Youmustberesponsiblewhenyouflynearanyskiarea.Contacttheskiresortsafetyservicepriortoflyingnearorataskiarea.Taketimetoexplainthesportandbeclearthatthesportisneverpracticedonpistesornearotherskiers.Aclearpresentationwithphotos,video,andadetailedsafetyexplanationisnecessary.

Alwayscarrytheavalanchesafetyandrescueequipmentnecessaryforbackcountryskiing.Inanyalpineenvironmentthefollowingequipmentisnecessary:avalanchetransceiver,shovel,probe,backprotec-tion,andhelmet.Itisabsolutelyessentialtochecktheweatherforecastandsnowconditions.Takeanyadvicefromqualifiedresortsafetyexpertsorhighmountainguides.

Youmustbeacompetentskierandparagliderpilotbeforeyouattempttoflyonsnow.

Donotflybyyourself.Alwaysusethebuddysystemandbeawareofthelocationandsafetyofyourpartners!Flyingexertsveryhighstressesonthehumanbody.Pilotsmustensurethattheyarephysicallyandmentallyfitenoughtocopewiththesestresses.Knowyourlimits.

Topreparethewing,layitoutonthetopsurfaceandperformathoroughdailycheck.Youshouldinspectthetopandbottomsurfacesforanyripsandtearsoranyotherobvioussignsofdamage.Layoutthelinesonesideatatime,holduptherisersandstartingwiththebrakelines,thestabilo,D,C,BandAlinespullallthelinesclear.Makesuretherearenoknotsortanglesandlaythecheckedlinesontopofthepreviousset.Mirrortheprocessontheothersideandtheninspectthelinesforanyvisualdamage.Theninspecttherisersforanysignsofobviousdamage.

Tofamiliariseyourselfwiththeglideritisagoodideatoperformpracticeinflationsandsmallflightsonatraininghill.Thiswillenableyoutosetupyourequipmentcorrectly.

HarnessItisimportanttosetupyourharnesscorrectlybeforeflyingthewing.Makesuretospendtimeadjustingyourharness’sdifferentsettingsuntilyouarecompletelycomfortable.Thecheststrapshouldbesetbetween42cmand48cm(betweenthecentreofthehangpoints).

LaunchingAfteryourdailyinspectionandpre-flightcheck,yourwingmaybelaunchedwitheithertheforwardorreversetechniques.Thewingshouldbelaidoutinapronouncedarc,withthecentreofthewinghigherthanthetips.Itisrecommendedtoreleasethetrimmersapproximately2cmtoaidtheinflationbehaviour.

Forward Launch - Nil to Light windsWhenthewindisfavourable,whilstgentlyholdingtheArisers,moveforwardpositively.Yourlinesshouldbecometightwithinoneortwostepsandthewingwillimmediatelystarttoinflate.Youshouldmaintainaconstantpressureontherisersuntilthewingisoverhead.Donotpulldownorpushtherisersforwardexcessively,ortheleadingedgewilldeformandpossiblycollapsemakingtaking-offmoredifficultandpotentiallydangerous.

Movesmoothlythroughouttheentirelaunch,thereisnoneedtorushorsnatchatit.Youshouldhaveplentyoftimetolookupandcheckyourcanopybeforecommittingyourself.Onceyouarehappythatthewingisinflatedcorrectly,acceleratesmoothlyoffthelaunch.

Reverse Launch - Light to Strong WindsLayoutyourwingasyouwouldfortheforwardlaunch.However,thistimeturntofaceit,passingoneentiresetofrisersoveryourheadasyouturn.NowyoucaninflatethegliderwithyourbodyweightandtheA-risers.Oncethewingisoverhead,releasetherisers,brakegentlyifnecessary,turnandlaunch.

Instrongerwinds,bepreparedtotakeafewstepstowardsthegliderasitinflates.Thiswilltakesomeoftheenergyoutoftheglideranditwillbelesslikelytooverflyyou.Thisreverse-launchtechniquecanbeusedinsurprisinglylightwindstoo.

TowingDonottowlaunchyourFirefly3.

TurningTofamiliarizeyourselfwiththeFirefly3,yourfirstturnsshouldbegradualandprogressive.Tomakecoordinatedturns,firstlookinthedirectionyouwanttogo,thensmoothlyapplythebrake.Itisasmalldynamicwing,sotakeiteasytobeginwithandlearntheresponseofthewingbeforesteepeningthe

turns.Toregulatethespeedandradiusofaturn,coordinatewithweightshiftandusetheouterbrakeifnecessary.

Active FlyingTominimizethelikelihoodofsufferingcollapsesinveryturbulentconditions,itisessentialtouseactiveflying.Theseareskillsthatarebestlearntbyplayingwiththegliderontheground.Flyingwithasmallamountofbrakeapplied(approx.20cm)willallowyoutofeelthefeedbackfromthewing.Inturbulentconditionstheinternalpressureofthewingisconstantlychangingandonlybyusingasmallamountofbrakewillyoufeelthesechanges.Theaimofactiveflyingistomaintainaconstantpressurethroughthebrakes,Ifyoufeelareductionorlossofpressureapplythebrakesuntilyoufeelnormalpressureagain.Onceyouhavenormalpressure,raisethehandsquicklybacktotheoriginalposition.Avoidflyingwithcontinuousamountsofdeepbrakeinroughairasyoucouldinadvertentlystallthewing.Alwaysconsideryourairspeed.

Nopilotandnogliderareimmunetocollapses.However,activeflyingwillvirtuallyeliminateanytendencytocollapse.Whentheconditionsareturbulent,bemoreactiveandanticipatethemovementsofyourwing,returnthetrimmerstotheslowposition,alwaysbeawareofyouraltitudeanddonotoverreact.Westronglyadviseyoutoalwayskeepholdofyourbrakesandnottoflyinturbulentconditions.

LandingChoosealandingareathatissmoothandfreeofobstacles.Theapproachspeedcanbeveryfastandrequiresanaccurateflare.Flarethewingbyapplyingbothbrakesattheappropriatemoment.Doingthiswilldecreaseyoursinkratetoalmostzeroandallowyoutotouchdowneasily.Nevermaketurnsoraggressivemaneuversclosetothegroundoronyourlandingapproach.

•Alwayssetupforyourlandingearly,giveyourselfplentyofoptionsandasafemarginforerror.

•Oncebelow30metresavoidturningtightlyasthegliderwillhavetodivetoacceleratebacktonormalflight.Ifyouareatlowaltitude,orifyouhitsink,thiscouldmeanyouhitthegroundharder

IMPORTANTNever take off with a wing that is not fully inflated or if you are not in complete control of your wing.

IMPORTANTNever initiate a turn at minimum speed (i.e. with full brakes on) as you could risk entering a spin.

IMPORTANTAlways keep hold of your brakes. Do not fly in turbulent conditions

•Leanforwardoutofyourharnessbeforetheactuallanding(especiallyifit’sturbulent),withyourweightleaningforwardagainstthecheststrap,andmakesureyourlegsarereadyforthelandingandapossiblePLF(parachutelandingfall).

•Allowtheglidertoflyathandsup(trim)speedforyourfinaldescentuntilyouarearound1metreabovetheground(inwindyorturbulentconditionsyoumustflytheglideractivelyalltheway).Applythebrakesslowlyandprogressivelytoslowthegliderdownuntilgroundspeedhasbeenreducedtoaminimumandyouareabletostepontotheground.

• Inlightwinds/zerowind,youneedastrong,longandprogressiveflaretobleedoffallyourexcessgroundspeed.Instrongwindsyourforwardspeedisalreadyreduced,soyouareflaringonlytosoftenthelanding.Astrongflaremayresultinthegliderclimbingupwardsandbackwardsquickly,leavingyouinavulnerableposition.

•Choosetheappropriateapproachstyleinfunctionofthelandingareaandtheconditions.

• Instrongwindsyouneedtoturntowardsthegliderthesecondyourfeettouchtheground.

Rapid Descent TechniquesDonotattemptparaglidingrapiddescenttechniquessuchasBigEars,B-Stalls,orSpirals.Yourwinghasahighsinkrateandyoushouldalwaysavoidflyinginconditionswhichmightrequiretheuseofrapiddescenttechniques.

DeflationsOzoneSpeedwingsareverystableandareresistanttodeflationsorcollapses.

Duetotheflexibleformofaparaglider,turbulencemaycauseaportionofthewingsuddenlytocollapse.Thiscanbeanythingfromasmall30%(asymmetric)collapsetoacomplete(symmetric)collapse.

Ifyouhaveacollapse,thefirstthingtodoistocontrolyourdirection.Youshouldflyawayfromthegroundorobstaclesandotherpilots.Asymmetriccollapsesshouldbecontrolledbyweightshiftingawayfromthecollapseandapplyingenoughbraketocontrolyourdirection.Thisactionalonewillbeenoughforafullrecoveryofthewingmostofthetime.Returningthetrimmerstotheneutralpositionwillaidrecovery.Onceagliderisdeflateditiseffectivelyasmallerwing,sothewingloadingandstallspeedarehigher.Thismeansthegliderwillspinorstallwithlessbrakeinputthannormal.Inyoureffortstostopthegliderturningtowardsthecollapsedsideofthewingyoumustbeverycarefulnottostallthesideofthewingthatisstillflying.Ifyouareunabletostopthegliderturningwithoutexceedingthestallpointthenallowtheglidertoturnwhilstyoureinflatethecollapse.

Ifyouhaveadeflationwhichdoesnotspontaneouslyreinflate,makealongsmoothprogressivepumponthedeflatedside.Thispumpingactionshouldtakeabout1-2secondsperpump.Pumpingtooshortandfastwillnotreinflatethewingandpumpingtooslowmighttaketheglidercloseto,orbeyond,thestallpoint.

Symmetricalcollapsesreinflatewithoutpilotinput.However,15to20cmofbrakeappliedsymmetricallyandrapidlywillspeeduptheprocess.Afterasymmetriccollapse,alwaysconsideryourairspeed.Makesurethegliderisnotinparachutalstallbeforemakinganyfurtherinputs.

IMPORTANTAlways be prepared to pilot the wing out of a spiral dive if you choose to perform one. Use opposite weight shift and apply enough outside brake to stop the wing from spiralling.

IMPORTANTOnly a few cms of input from your brakes can maintain your wing in the stall. Always release your wraps if you have taken them!

Deep Stall / Parachutal StallItispossibleforgliderstoenterastateofparachutalstall.Thiscanbecausedbyseveralsituationsincluding:averyslowreleasefromaB-linestall,flyingthegliderwhenwet,orafterafront/symmetricdeflation.Theglideroftenlooksasthoughithasrecoveredproperlybutcarriesondescendingverticallywithoutfullforwardmotion.Thissituationiscalled‘deepstall’or‘parachutalstall’.

ItisunlikelytohappenonanyOzoneglider,butshouldit,yourfirstreactionshouldbetofullyraisebothhands.Thisnormallyallowstheglidertoreturntonormalflight.Ifnothinghappensafterafewseconds,reachupandpushtheA-risersforwardsorapplythespeedbartoencouragethewingtoregainnormalflight.Ensurethegliderhasreturnedtonormalflight(checkyourairspeed)beforeyouusethebrakesagain.

Donotflyinrain.Doingsosignificantlyincreasesthelikelihoodofparachutalstallsoccurring.Toreducethechanceofstallinginrain,avoidusingdeepbrakemovementsFindasafeareatoland,andusethetrimmerstomaintainagoodairspeedatalltimes.

•DONOTslamyourgliderdownonthegroundleadingedgefirst!Thisimpactputsgreatstrainonthewingandstitchingandcanevenexplodecells.

•FLYINGinsaltyair,inareaswithabrasivesurfaces(sand,rocksetc.)andgroundhandlinginstrongwindswillacceleratetheagingprocess.

•DONOTflyintherainorexposethewingtomoisture.

•DONOTexposethewingtounnecessaryUV.Packawayonceyouhavefinishedflying.Donotleaveitsittinginthesun.

• Ifyouflywithawrap,youshouldregularlyundothetwistingthatappearsonthemainbrakelines.Whenthelineistwisteditbecomesshorter,whichmayapplyconstanttensiononthetrailingedge(whichcanleadtoproblemonlaunch,spinning,stalling,glidernotflyingsymmetricallyetc.

•Changeyourmainbrakelinesiftheyaredamaged.

•BeCarefulwhengroundhandlingtonotsawthebrakelinesagainsttherisersormainlines.Theabrasioncausedbyasawingmotioncandamagethemainlinesandleadtoprematureageingoftherisers.Ifyounoticeanysignsofabrasion,especiallytothelines,makesureyougetthewingprofessionallyservicedandimportantlymodifyyourgroundhandlingtechniquetostopanyfurtherdamage.

Storage and TransportAlwaysstoreallyourflyingequipmentinadryroom,protectedfromdirectheat.Yourwingshouldbedrybeforebeingpackedaway.Moisture,heatandhumidityaretheworstelementsfordamagingyourglider.Storingadampgliderinyourcarunderthesunwouldbeterribleforexample.

Ifyoulandinsaltwater,youmustfirstrinseitthoroughlywithcleanfreshwater.Drythewingcompletely,preferablyoutofthesun,inthewind.Neveruseahairdryer,etc.

Takecarethatnoinsectsgetpackedawaywiththewing.Theymayeattheclothandmakeholesinabidtoescape.Theycanalsoleaveacidicdepositsiftheydieanddecompose.
