Pine Shores Presbyterian Church January 2018 “The Mission of Pine Shores Presbyterian Church is to encourage, equip and empower each other to serve the needs of a hurting and broken world by sharing the hope and joy of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed.” PINE LINES There is a story about tenor Luciano Pavarotti. His father was a baker and the one who introduced his young son to the wonders of song. His father urged his young son to work very hard to develop his voice. Arrigo Pola was a professional tenor in his hometown of Modena, Italy and took Luciano as a pupil. Pavarotti also enrolled in a teachers college. On graduating, he asked his father, "Shall I be a teacher or a singer? Luciano, his father replied, if you try to sit on two chairs, you will fall between them. For life, you must choose one chair. Pavarotti wrote: I chose one. It took seven years of study and frustration before I made my first professional appearance. It took another seven to reach the Metropolitan Opera. And now I think whether it’s laying bricks, writing a book— whatever we choose—we should give ourselves to it. Commitment, that’s the key. Choose a chair.” Maybe because of all the Christmas shopping I had, making all those choices of which gifts to buy or perhaps there are deeper psychological issues for me to continue to avoid but I’ve been reflecting on the significant of choice. As I wander around this notion, I stumbled upon a TED Talk by Sheena Iyengar. She is a researcher at Columbia. Her talk was entitled the “Art of Choosing.” She was insightful and entertaining so I did some digging and discovered that in her research she has found that the average person makes about 70 choices/decisions every day. That's 25,500 choices/decisions a year. Over 70 years, that's 1,788,500 choices/decisions. I think it was the 20th century philosopher, Albert Camus who once said, "Life is a sum of all your choices." You put all of those 1,788,500 choices together, and that's who you are. That’s a lot of choices to make on a daily basis. For me, one of my toughest choices is what tie to wear or let me rephrase that… what color tie goes best with the color of my pants. I’m not so good at matching colors. When in doubt, it is gray slacks, a long-sleeved white shirt because any tie will do. Where to eat lunch is another choice. (I know I should bring lunch to the office but that is also a choice I make as well.) Making choices is an integral part of our daily lives. Recently, I made the choice to plant a garden… lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, collards (not for me – for Sam). I’ve planted rosemary, thyme, basil and lavender. It’s not an exhaustive garden, just big enough for me to play in the dirt. There is something about getting your hands dirty. Interestingly that is true. Scientists have discovered what children have always known - playing in the dirt makes you feel good. Studies have shown that dirt contains microscopic bacteria called Mycobacterium yaccae. These bacteria increase the levels of the feel good hormone seratonin in our brains helping to soothe and relax us. So go out and play in the dirt. Here is where I’m going with all of this. I cannot plant one kind of vegetable or a particular herb and expect something else to grow. It’s pretty simple. If I plant habanero peppers seeds, habanero peppers will grow not hot bananas. As I plant romaine lettuce seeds, I pretty much know that romaine lettuce will grow. If plant I cherry tomatoes, I’m assured that cherry tomatoes will be produced. T.M. Scanlon reminded us: “It comes down to this, you can choose your choice, but you cannot choose your consequences. When you make your choice, you— of necessity—choose the consequences that go along with the choice.” Choices emerge from what we care about and value, and they originate out of our preferences or interests. What choices do we make here at Pine Shores to live out our faith in this time and place? What ministries and mission do we choose to show who we are and what we believe God is calling us to do? As we enter into a New Year, we start a 6 week series entitled “We Choose.” Each Sunday we will highlight a component of living Christ-like: community, gratitude, commitment, caring, serving and welcome. There are many other values we could lift up during the series but we settled on these six. Pine LinesThere is a story about tenor Luciano Pavarotti.

His father was a baker and the one who introduced his young son to the wonders of song. His father urged his young son to work very hard to develop his voice. on the third Sunday. Don’t worry. We’ll still have a commitment Sunday but we wanted the focus to be bigger than making a pledge. The “We Choose” series includes the significance of baptism as our focus will be on community; our stewardship will focus on gratitude and commitment; Youth & SouperBowl Sunday will focus on caring & serving and on Music Celebration & Annual Congregational meeting Sunday “welcome” will be our theme. T.M. Scanlon is correct that “when you make your choice, you—of necessity—choose the consequences that go along with the choice.” If we want the consequence to be "live more Christ-like" then our choices become clearer. It is not hard to make those choices when you know what you value and know in a personal way the One who fearfully and wonderfully made you.

Living in Gratitude

In an article entitled Gratitude to the Rescue, participants in a 2014 gratitude study were asked to record their daily experiences in a journal. Half were also required to list things for which they were grateful. At the end of the study, researchers found that subjects

who counted their blessings reacted less strongly to stressful events they experienced.

The effects of gratitude are thought to have lasting effects as well. Researchers believe that "recalling grateful moments may replenish resources that can then be used to adapt to or to overcome stress."

There are many ways to make gratitude a part of your daily life and enjoy the immediate and lasting benefits. Here are five practices to try when life becomes stressful.

1. Create A List. Spend five minutes every day listing positive aspects of your life. Take nothing for granted! The sun is shining. (Or there is much-needed rain.) You have hot water in the shower. Your car started. You have a job. Your children are healthy.

2. Say Thanks. Make a point to acknowledge all the people who help you throughout the day. Show your appreciation and take note of all the people in your life who support you.

3. Don't Just Say Grace. When sitting down to eat -- even on the go -- take a moment to appreciate all the people who contributed to the food you consume. Acknowledge the many farmers, truck drivers, butchers, bakers, factory workers, cooks, servers and clerks who were involved in the process.

4. Write A Note. Having a hard time finding something to be grateful for in your current situation? No problem. A recent study showed that writing a thank you note to someone who helped you in the past but was never properly acknowledged can reduce feelings of depression.

5. Don't Count Sheep. The classic Bing Crosby song got it right. Counting your blessings instead of sheep can help ease you into slumber, especially when negative thoughts come calling late at night. Keep your gratitude list (see #1) and a pen on the bedside table so if you awaken feeling anxious you can be reminded of all the positive things in your life. Add to the list to send fearful thoughts packing as you drift off to sleep.

Gratitude deepens our understanding and how we use the gifts Gods has given us.

As Christians our lives are shaped by gratitude – we choose gratitude.

Stewardship is often reduced to an annual program, the annual program is reduced to the means to achieve an end, and the end is reduced to the church budget. There is a story about a minister who was giving a sermon on “total giving.” When it came time to take up the offering, the plate came to a pew where there was a very small boy. He looked up at the usher and said, “Could you lower the plate?” Thinking that he wanted to see into the plate, the usher held it down a bit. “No,” said the boy, “a little lower, please.” The usher lowered it a bit more. “More; could you just put it on the floor?” the boy asked. The usher was aghast but finally put it on the floor. The boy stepped into it, stood there, and said, “This is what I give to the Lord.” (A Stewardship Scrapbook)

Choose gratitude.

The Worship and Music Committee recommended to Council (Session) that Pine Shores purchase new hymnals. This action was prompted by a special contribution designated for the purpose of purchasing new hymnbooks. The Council accepted the recommendation and the gift. The hymnal is entitled “Glory to God” and was published by Westminster John Knox Press in 2013. In the introduction it reads:

“We know this hymnal will changes lives. We know this hymnal will inspire the church. We know these songs will enliven worship in

powerful ways.We know familiar songs will sing anew

We know the new songs will speak truth.”

The Council invites all who would like to purchase a hymnbook in honor of or in memory of are encouraged to do so. A special acknowledgement will be placed in the hymnal. Each hymnbook costs $20.00. Please let the Church office know if you are interesting in purchasing a hymnal in honor or memory of someone.

Don’t forget to bring your dollar bill and place it in the offering plate. It’s a way to model giving and generosity for our children and those worshipping with us. It’s a simple way to teach about faithful giving.

2018 Souper Bowl of Caring

PSY is participating in this year’s nation-wide effort to raise money and awareness for hunger and food insecurity in our local community. Throughout the month of January, we will be collecting money and non-perishable food items to donate to local organizations and charities that feed the hungry in our community. This year, PSY plans to raise $10,000.00 and 1,800 cans of soup for local organizations and ministries who feed the hungry. Each year the Pine Shores community gives generously, and together we are able to help fill pantries and stock shelves with food at Beth-El Farmworker Ministry, First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte Community Food Pantry, and All Faiths Food Bank. We could not do this without your compassion and commitment to help.

This year along with the Souper Bowl of Caring Collection on Youth Sunday, February 4th, we will be hosting a Trivia Night Fundraiser in order to involve more people in our community and raise more money. We will have collection bins for food in the sanctuary and in the community center, and youth students will distribute flyers, bags and invitations to our Pine Shores neighbors. This is a project that really takes the whole community, and we are so grateful for your support and giving every year. Thank you for all you do to take care of others.

Thank you to the New Connections Team members who bring cookies and other refreshments in the month of January.
