It is starting to get wetter and colder, so please make sure your child has a change of clothes and plenty of warm clothes for each school day. Thanks to our Teacher Trainees It has been great to have Damien Kennedy and Anna Freeman working in Rooms 6 and 4 over the past 6 weeks. They both finish their teaching practice placement this Friday, so we would like to thank them for their work in our school. Paid Union Meeting As you may be aware, the union that represents teachers is currently undergoing negotiations with the Ministry of Education with regards to teachers’ collective agreement. The Union have called a meeting on 29 June in Lower Hutt. All union members are legally entitled to attend this meeting to discuss contract negotiations. On this afternoon, we would appreciate it if you could pick your children up at 12.30pm as we will be working on a very skeleton staff of me and the support staff! Please note that school is not officially closed, and if you are unable to collect your child, we will provide an alternative programme for the afternoon. It is important that if this is the case, you let the office know by Friday 22 June so that I can ensure we have enough staff to supervise. We really appreciate your cooperation and support in this matter. Financial Report 2017 Our audited financial report for 2017 can now be found in the ‘Our School’ section of our school website. The end of the document includes the analysis of variance in relation to our 2017 achievement targets which were set to improve the educational outcomes for our students. Great Representation! It was so great to see so many of our students giving it their all at the Interschool Cross Country on Sunday. Big thanks to all the families who supported their children in getting there and competing, as well as marshalling on the course. I also want to thank Sam Blandford for coming on his Sunday afternoon as our school coordinator. Luke Beams & Finn McGlinchey – 2nd, 4th & 5th places respectively in the Y5 boys’ race and Ruby Quinn – 4th place Y6 girls’. It was also great to see the photo of the Year 6 Student Leaders at National Young Leaders’ Day on Tuesday. Unfortunately, we were unable to take all Student Leaders this year as we had limited tickets and they are very expensive (and heavily subsidised by the school). Our Year 6 students represented our school very well and the Year 5 students who are current Student Leaders will get a chance next year. Thanks to Miss Tate and Miss Ingle for taking them. Reports Teachers are currently undertaking the writing of mid-year reports to parents. These will come out on 15 June, followed by Learning Conversations on 19 and 20 June. More information will come out to you about booking these closer to the time. What I think is important is that parents understand that while we won’t be using the term ‘national standards’, we will certainly still be informing you of how your child is progressing in relation to the NZ Curriculum, so you will still have an understanding of whether or not they are meeting expectations. Have a great few weeks ahead! Kaylene

ROAD PATROL We are looking for someone to help on Road Patrol on Wednesday mornings from 8.30 - 9.00. If this is you, could you please contact Mr Blandford at [email protected]. SCOOTERS We have a number of scooters that have been left at school and are still unclaimed. If your child has lost a scooter over the past 12 months please speak to Mr Coupe and provide a description of the scooter so it can be returned. All scooters not claimed by the end of term will be donated. MATHSATHON

Forms have already gone home for students to collect sponsorship or donations and are due back to school on Monday 28th May.

During Week 5, Monday 28th May - Friday 1st June, the children will be tested in class time on their numeracy questions. Teachers will test, mark and return the Mathsathon forms by Friday 1st June, recording the results for the children to then collect the money from sponsors/donators. All money is due by Friday 15th June, Week 7.

Thanks for your support for this fundraiser, getting sponsorship or donations from family, friends and workmates. The Mathsathon will help us raise funds that the Home and School Committee put towards things like the purchase of new equipment and additional teaching resources. The more money we raise, the more resources and equipment we can help purchase!

All students who return a Mathsathon form, with at least one sponsor or donation, will have a chance to win a prize. There are three separate prizes—one for a Kereru Hub student, one for a Tui Hub student, and one for a Korimako Hub student. The class who raises the most per student will also win a prize. Prize winners at the School Assembly on Monday 2nd June, Week 10.

HOST A CHINESE TEACHER THIS YEAR WITH AFS Last year we were lucky enough to have Miss Lilly from China spend a few weeks in our school. We would love to be able to host another teacher this year and in order to do that we need to find a host family, in our community, for the teacher to live with. Hosting can be split between more than one family and is a great experience for the whole family! Please see below for more details it you are interested in hosting a teacher for the few weeks and please let the school office know if you are interested in this opportunity.

Children in Korimako have all chosen different topics that they would like to learn about that relate to our big ideas, 'Interconnectedness' and 'Who or what depends on you?' Some of these topics include; food webs, protecting endangered species, plastic pollution, colonies, tuakana/teina, among others. As part of Literacy, some children have written some informative texts based around different life cycles that occur in nature.

The Life Cycle of a Long-Finned Eel by Alex

The Life Cycle of a Frog by Finn

As part of Hauora/Health and P.E., children in Korimako have been learning about Te Whare Tapa Wha, the Māori health and wellbeing model.

Here are some reflections on a task that was based around the feeling of embarrassment: "When I had to dance in front of people, I was afraid. I was afraid I would be judged and my reputation would decrease. It had a negative affect on my hinengaro or my mental wellbeing." - Amelia "When I was practising throwing the tennis ball with my left hand, it both reinforced my taha tinana, and had a negative affect on my taha hinengaro." - Aiden

Ways to do Math/Pāngarau at home!

Kia ora! With reports coming home towards the end of the term, it’s a great time to talk about ways to help at home. There is lots of research that backs up the important role of parent/guardian talking about and supporting the learning going on at school. It is important to show children that math is not only just used at school but we use math at home too. Numbers are absolutely everywhere! A really good website is https://nzmaths.co.nz/maths-our-house which has awesome ideas about using what we have at home as learning experiences for maths.

One of the categories is gardening, which is timely with Matariki around the corner and Queen’s birthday weekend.

If you have any queries about your child’s math learning, please see their classroom teacher. Let’s keep the math conversation going.
