Radiology became the natural choice as it is interwoven throughout the other special- ties. I love to hear my patients exclaim, "that wasn't so bad" at the end of their biopsy. I am particularly drawn to breast imaging given the high prevalence of breast cancer. It’s a scary diagnosis and I am committed to easing the anxiety of my patients through education and a high degree of accessibility to me for any questions. What attracted you to the field of radiology? During medical school, I had a very difficult time deciding which specialty to choose since I loved everything! Radiology became the natural choice as it is interwoven throughout the other special-ties. I now have the privilege to care for a diverse group of patients and work with physicians of every specialty. The constant change inherent in the field of radiology is also very appealing as I forever strive to provide the highest level of care to my patients. What made you choose your fellow-ship or specific area of concentration?

I completed two fellowships at Yale New Haven Hospital - Breast Imaging and Musculoskeletal Imaging. I chose them in part because they allowed me the greatest amount of patient interaction with a large amount of procedures.

The physical and emotional comfort of my patients is the highest priority. I love to hear my patients exclaim, "that wasn't so bad" at the end of their biopsy. I am particularly drawn to breast imaging given the high prevalence of breast cancer. What is your philosophy on patient care?

All of my patients are VIPs! I treat each patient as though they were family, giving them the absolute best care possible and easing any fears or anxiety. Each patient receives my undivided attention and has the opportunity to have any questions answered. I realize that although I have performed many biopsies and do so everyday, my patients have not. As the most common form of dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease affects memory, judgment and other mental functions. Scientists cite genetics, family history, and age as the most important risk factors. Other risk factors which are emerging as relational include head trauma, diet, exercise, heart health, tobacco, alcohol, and loneliness or lack of daily stimulation.

Until now, doctors have only been able to diagnose the disease by clinical evaluation. This includes a detailed patient history, observing patients, and administering physical and mental tests. Currently, a definitive diagnosis can only be obtained through direct inspection of the brain looking for beta-amyloid placques and tau tangles after death during an autopsy. However, a new type of brain scan is now available to assist physicians in an Alzheimer's Disease diagnosis.

“There is new hope that a diagnosis of Alzheimer's will result in more informed treatment decisions that can be made sooner if physicians are aware of a large presence of beta-amyloid placques, a known component of Alzheimer’s,” says Everett Gayle, a radiologist at Radiology Associates.

It is believed that Alzheimer's is caused by an overabundance of beta-amyloid placques in the brain. While everyone may accumulate beta-amyloid placques as they age, patients with Alzheimer's have a larger quantity. Just as cholesterol can clog arteries and lead to cardiovascular disease, amyloid placques can build up in the brain and interfere with normal neurological function.

Approved by the Federal Drug Administration in 2012, the Amyvid PET/CT Brain Scan was developed to detect beta-amyloid plaques. Radiology Associates is the first and only organization to offer the test in the Coastal Bend.

During the PET brain exam, a radioactive imaging agent, Amyvid, is injected through an IV. Amyvid binds to the beta-amyloid plaques allowing them to be seen on the PET brain scan. A scan detecting very few beta-amyloid placques does not favor a diagnosis of Alzheimer's at the time of the exam. A scan demonstrating moderate to frequent beta-amyloid placquing must be considered in the context of the patient's age and clinical findings since normal individuals may have beta-amyloid placquing, increasing with age.

“Because there are several types of dementia, the real benefit of this new tool is in eliminating the diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease in individuals with a negative scan since very few beta-amyloid placques is inconsistent with Alzheimer's Disease. Clinicians can then look for other causes of cognitive decline,” says Gayle.

More than 40 radiologists, staff and family members put on their "bones" shirts again and rolled up their sleeves to paint the exterior of the Family Outreach - Corpus Christi. Family Outreach is a non-profit organization which offers support services to strengthen local families. The all-volunteer group from Radiology Associates "adopted" the organization for 2013 - collecting food and clothing, as well as painting the interior and exterior of their building.
