October 2016
Students in Room 217 have had the pleasure of working with Mrs. Andrade on Instant Challenges. Instant Challenges are tasks that students have to complete in a very short period of time with limited supplies. We work in collaborative groups to come up with a creative solution to the challenge. Students are encouraged to communicate and think critically during the task. Groups are asked to explain how they came up with their solution and they often have ideas to improve or use next time. Our next steps will include reflecting on the experience.
Instant Challenges connect to all subject areas and parts of our school day. These tasks allow
students to build relationships and practice skills and strategies that are applicable to their
everyday lives. Picture evidence and some of our tasks are on display in our classroom.
Some of our challenges include:
Pom Pom Launcher Challenge
Paper Chain Challenge
Bridge Challenge

Did you know that plastic bags can be recycled into frisbees, bird houses, planter boxes and benches?
The Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Committee is challenging Pinkham students, staff and community members to reduce the amount of plastic bags that litter our environment.
Students are asked to collect as many plastic shopping bags as possible during the month of October and bring
them to the school for recycling.
Schools who participate will be entered to win prizes with a grand prize of a park bench to beautify the school grounds.
Lets do our part to reduce the amount

Keep your child/children and the rest of our school community healthy.
The flu season in Manitoba usually begins in the late fall and lasts into the spring. The flu is an infection caused by a virus. It can spread easily from one person to another through coughing, sneezing or sharing food or drinks. You can also get the flu by touching objects contaminated with flu virus and then touching your mouth, eyes or nose. Here are some proven ways to help reduce the spread of germs and viruses: Wash hands: Wash your hands frequently with soap and running water for at least 15 seconds. Elbows: Cough or sneeze into the inside of the elbow. Eyes, nose, and mouth: Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as germs and viruses can transfer from the hands into the body in this way. Safety zone: Stay at least one metre away from anyone who is sick. Please keep children who are sick at home. Do not send them to school. They should not be around other people until they are better. If you have questions, please contact your healthcare provider. For more information, contact Health Links at 204-788-8200 or visit the Manitoba Health website: www.gov.mb.ca/health
