There is a merry band of “Artsy People” who have been having way too much fun in the Teen Center for the past month or so. Members leave the center daily looking like walking Jackson Pollack “drip paintings”! We could probably get big bucks for our drop cloths as well! This project was inspired by the acclaimed liturgical artist, Nancy Chinn, who taught a four- day workshop to four of our committee over 18 months ago at her Mendocino, CA studio. Over two miles of netting have been painted/dipped in color and that is all that we can share at this point. We want you to be surprised!

We hope to unveil our efforts to the congregation on Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. This temporary installation, in honor of Pinnacle’s 25th Anniversary year, has been a joy to create, and we hope it becomes the first of many

different artistic expressions for praising God at Pinnacle. There will be more opportunities for anyone who wishes to be a part of this creative vision for Pinnacle to join in the fun. We are already planning a completely different endeavor possibly for Advent of next year. Look for our “shout out” for volunteers in the fall.

TracingsA Letter from Dr. Wesley Avram

Following the Light at PinnacleDear friends,There's a line of a prayer to God in Psalm 119 that's

probably familiar to some of you, even if you don't know where it comes from: "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." I like Eugene Peterson's translation: "By your words I can see where I’m going; they throw a beam of light on my dark path" (Ps. 119:105, The Message).

Divine wisdom, divine light, divine focus to give some illumination of the path ahead. Even if the path isn't so dark, a little direction or attention can make us more confident as we walk.

The church calls the work of capturing that light discernment. That's a work that is more than applying expertise, or learning "best practices," or collecting and tabulating opinions, or appealing to tastes and consumer preferences to develop a product line. It's slower than that, bathed in prayer, and sometimes a bit like following a scent around a corner. You follow a scent around that corner to discover a path that's illumined by light you didn't see before you turned that very corner.

That's the work that we're doing in our Pinnacle Vision project this year. It's exciting. It's also a little frightening. We might not know exactly where it will lead. But we will learn to trust that the same power of innovation and vision that compelled a group of the faithful to stake a claim and build a church 25 years ago will compel us to stake new claims today, and turn new corners, and follow where the light's been leading us all along.

MISSION AT PINNACLE

Growing and Growing Up25th Anniversary Mission Project

In Pinnacle's 25 years of growth, the focus on the homeless and impoverished has never been stronger than it is now. This is a very compassionate and generous congregation with its time, talent and resources.

Our Pinnacle Promise initiative is focused specifically on the homeless and has involved a significant number in the congregation. People work with the hungry at Andre House, families at UMOM, Veterans at MANA, hands-on at Open Table, communicating via Road Back Home. We support these groups and United Way financially as well.

Pinnacle members through our Communities Ministry effort care for seniors, build homes and support other out-reach organizations. Two organizations that lead the way in providing for those less-fortunate in our community are Vista Del Camino and St. Vincent de Paul.

For our 25th Anniversary Mission Project, our goal is to provide additional support to Vista del Camino and St Vincent de Paul. Each have significant reach and a broad range of services to the impoverished.

Our goal is to provide Vista del Camino and St. Vincent de Paul as a gift, 2500 cans of food, 2500 pounds of harvested produce at our one-day mission project.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES

Church School Sneak PeakThis month the children in our Godly Play Class (3’s-Kindergarten)

will continue to learn about the faces of Easter as they look at different people and their role in Easter. We will unfold the love story of Jesus for all of us.

Our 1st-5th grades will be looking more closely at patience and what it means to wait. We’ll be working on memorizing Psalm 27:14. “Wait for the Lord. Be strong and don’t lose hope. Wait for the Lord!” This simple verse is a great reminder that when having patience seems too difficult, the Lord will give us strength to wait.

This year we will cool off with Everest VBS where children will explore one of the most majestic, beautiful (and sometimes dangerous!) places on earth. They will join Climbing Crews to “trek” through our Everest VBS, discovering God’s power and promises all along the way.

The cost is $50/child, but if you volunteer for the week, the cost drops to $15/child.

We will spend time each day hearing Bible stories, learning songs about God, enjoying games and snacks, and other great activities.

Adults and Teens Needed on Easter MorningSunday April 5 | 8:00, 10:00 and 11:30 am

Easter Morning, April 5, is sure to bring loads of children to the church!! If you can help with the children at the 8:00, 10:00 or 11:30 service, we can use your hands.

The children will be in the Sanctuary building, and we’ll have activities for them all set and ready to go. One of the pastors, along with members of the Children’s Ministry Committee, will be leading elementary children, and members of our Children’s Ministry Committee will be leaders of the younger class as well.

We expect 50-60 children in each group, and the more adults and teens we have, the better. We hope that you would be willing to attend one worship service and serve another so that all can have a wonderful Easter experience.

What’s New at POW! Wednesdays | 5:00-7:30pm | Fellowship Hall

POW!, Pinnacle on Wednesdays!, continues to meet in March, and we hope that you can join us for a fellowship dinner at 5:30 pm. This month we will start off on March 4 with McDonald’s night. March 11 we will enjoy Barro’s pizza and pasta, and on March 18 we will have breakfast for dinner. There is no need to RSVP - just join us in Fellowship Hall for some dinner and fellowship. We will be finished in time for you to attend the Vespers Service. We will not have POW! on March 25 due to the Rummage Sale.

Join us for an Easter Potluck on Wednesday, April 1, at 5:30 pm in Fellowship Hall. We aren’t fooling, this is a regular POW! evening, and you’re invited to an Easter potluck. We’ll provide the hams, and all you need to do is bring your favorite side! We hope you can join us as we celebrate Holy week.



Easter Egg Donations RequestedEaster Eggstravaganza is Saturday, April 4, and we need your help!

Please consider bringing 2-3 dozen plastic candy-filled eggs to church, and drop them off in the office or in a special basket following worship on Sunday.

Please avoid chocolate, as it melts quite quickly in our hot Arizona sun. We’ll collect eggs through Good Friday, April 3. Each year we have over 3,000 eggs that children collect, and your donations help!!!

Don’t Miss This Easter Eggstravaganza!!Saturday, April 4 | 10:00 am | The Green

This annual event starts at 10 am SHARP on Saturday, April 4, so don’t be late. Join us for an old-fashioned Easter egg pickup, refreshments, crafts, games and more!!!

We will have over 3,000 eggs for children to collect, and there are different areas for each age. Everyone gets a chance to fill their basket!!!

Special eggs will have tickets to redeem for jumbo stuffed animals and other prizes.

Bring your friends and family as well as your camera. It’s an event that is widely attended and enjoyed by many. There is no cost to attend.

Club 45 Movie DaySunday, March 15 | Teen Center | 3:00 -5:00 pm

Club 45, our Fellowship group for 4th and 5th graders, will have Movie Day. Check your inboxes for details, and feel free to bring a friend.


PINNACLE PRESBYTERIAN PRESCHOOL

Summer Adventure Camp Summer Adventure Camp 2015 has new and exciting activities

planned for this year’s campers. Priority registration begins March 9, and then opens up to the community on Monday, March 16. Classes will be grouped according to age and limited to small sizes, so be sure to sign up early and reserve your child’s spot. Held weekly, Monday through Thursday from 9am - 1pm, it’s easy to tailor it around your summer vacation plans. Children who are reliably toilet trained and turn three prior to June 1 through those entering kindergarten in the fall are welcome to join the fun. Dates, activities and registration information will be available on the website in March at www.pinnaclepres.org/summer-adventure-camp/.

TENDING THE PROMISE

Year-to-date through January 2015, total income was higher than last year's January YTD by 19%, or $216,029, which was mainly due to generous non-pledged giving. We did another good job of managing our total expenditures to be approximately the same as last year. Our personnel expense is slightly higher than last year while our maintenance expense was slightly lower than this time last year, approximately offsetting each other. Overall we have a surplus this year of $16,250, which is $256,038 better than last year at this time. Our cash balance ended the month at $252,392, after a $200,000 mortgage debt repayment and a $50,000 line of credit payment in January.

An additional $200,000 was applied to the mortgage principal in January. We have paid almost two million dollars in principal to-date. We are on target to meet our goal of retiring our mortgage this year.

gathered for the first performance of what is now known as the West Valley Symphony. Maestro Kellogg was named Music Director/Conductor of the group in April 2009, and with his personable style and exceptional talent the orchestra continues to provide stirring performances for the West Valley throughout the year. Now the orchestra travels to the east side of the Valley to present an entertaining program of dance music which will include the “Bacchanale” from Saint-Saens’ Samson and Delilah, Polovtsian Dances by Borodin and Ravel’s Bolero along with other well-known works.

Join us as we unwrap the gift of music from other cultures under the leadership of Dr. Lorraine Brugh, Associate Professor of Music and Director of Chapel Music at Valparaiso University (Indiana). Using the new Presbyterian hymnal, among other resources, she will guide us in exploring music from the African, Asian and South American cultures and the possibilities for their use in our worship services here at Pinnacle. This workshop is open to all interested congregational members. Music learned on Saturday will be used in worship the following Sunday morning, March 8. Kira Rugen Steps Down as Director of Children’s Singing Choirs

Kira Rugen is leaving her position as Director of Children’s Singing Choirs at the end of April after ten years in that role. Under her leadership, these choirs have provided a wide variety of music that not only enriched and inspired our worship services but also entertained outreach concert audiences. In addition, Kira directed the children and youth in a number of memorable musicals, all the while providing invaluable music education for these young choristers. We will miss Kira, and thank her for her years of service. What follows is a personal note from Kira:

It is with a combination of gratitude and nostalgia that I step down as the director of Pinnacle Presbyterian Children’s choirs. I began at Pinnacle in 2001 as the soprano soloist, and then became the director of children and youth choirs in 2004-2005. I am deeply grateful for the fourteen beautiful years I have spent at Pinnacle Presbyterian, in particular my work with children and youth choirs. I have been blessed by the warmth of Pinnacle’s families and their support of the many Christmas musicals, Godspell, trips to St. Olaf College, outreach concerts, guest conductors, singing in worship and the creation of a lovely CD. It was my pleasure to help these young singers improve musically and have the opportunity to hear them grow year after year. I will miss their happy personalities and beautiful voices dearly.

I am also thankful for the support of Brent and Marilyn Hylton as we’ve worked together developing the POW! program. Although I do not know exactly what the future holds, I am opening the door to new opportunities as I apply for collegiate positions around the country and remain as the artistic director of my non-profit professional choir, Solis Camerata. My family and I continue to hold Pinnacle at the center of our hearts, our church home, and we are very grateful for the many precious memories.

Pinnacle Foundation Accepting Applications for Scholarship Award

The Pinnacle Presbyterian Church Foundation is pleased to announce that applications are now available for the 2015 Scholar Awards. This fund will provide up to $4000 for multiple scholarships. Interested students who have been accepted to or are attending an accredited post-secondary school program are eligible.

Applicants must be a member of Pinnacle Presbyterian Church and show involvement in school, community and church activities. Applications may be requested from the church office, 480.585.9448, or found on the church website. Completed applications must be returned to the church office by March 15, 2015.

Debate rages today about marriage and sexuality. Western views were born as the church shaped our culture around the institution of marriage, but accepted views are in flux. For the church, though, any discussion of human sexuality still begins with a discussion of Christian marriage. For that reason, even as debates rage there’s good reason to pause and consider. Building on Pinnacle’s January workshop, “Marriage Matters,” Dr. Avram will offer three Lenten discussions about how Christians are debating sexuality and marriage: 1.) What about the Bible?; 2.) What about theology and culture?; 3.) What about the church?

Lorraine S. Brugh is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Chapel Music at Valparaiso University. She serves as the university organist and the Frederick J. Kruse Endowed Chair in Church Music. Dr. Brugh is the director of the Kantorei, and teaches organ and church music. Dr. Brugh helped lead the development of the ELCA’s Evangelical Lutheran Worship and is co-author of The Sunday Assembly, published in 2008 to help church leaders incorporate the hymnal’s materials into worship services.

The Bible has a long and intriguing history. As Christians we claim that this gathering of writings shapes and determines our understanding of God, ourselves, and the universe. How well do we know its origins though? This four-week class will explore how the Bible came to be, including such topics as: the different types of writings in the Old and New Testaments, the languages of the Bible (Hebrew, Aramaic & Greek), the trouble of translating the biblical writings, how the books of the New Testament were selected (the formation of the canon), which early Christian writings didn’t make it into the Bible, and how the Bible has come to us today in the many English translations.
