Pinomatic non-settling log production line for Vaaran Palkki Oy Matti Rantala, Pinomatic Oy
Pinomatic Oy will supply Vaaran
Palkki Oy’s newly constructed pro-
duction plant with a production line
for non-settling log blanks. The pro-
duction line is Pinomatic’s first coop-
eration with the Veljekset Vaara fam-
ily company in Tervola and Vaaran
Palkki Oy, which was established for
log production. In addition to the
non-settling log production line, the
delivery includes a planing and finger
jointing line.
The latest equipment enables Vaaran
Palkki Oy to increase the level of
further processing and, in the long
run, to develop its entire production
more. The new 7,600 m2 production
plant will focus on the production of
log blanks. In addition, the plant pro-
duces finger jointed cladding blanks
and other finger jointed construction
products, as well as glulam beams.
Construction of the new production
plant in Tervola Puupuisto has be-
gun, and the goal is to complete the
facilities by the beginning of 2021.
Equipment installations will also
begin then. The log blanks made in
the factory are 300 mm high and the
most common width is 205-270 mm.
The plant will employ about twenty
people.
Veljekset Vaara Group was founded
in 1981. In addition to the parent com-
pany sawing the wood, it includes the
wood procurement company Vaaran
Metsä Oy and Vaaran Palkki Oy, which
was established for log production.
There are about 80 employees in the
entire group.
Last year Pinomatic Oy made its first
trade with Maderas Arauco, located
in Chile. Delivery included stacking
solution including trimmer saw after
HF-press. Equipment has arrived in
Chile, but because of the worldwide
situation, it will be installed later this
year.
Today there are three similar model
Pinomatic stacking solutions in Chile!
Chilean customers have been very
pleased with the equipment func-
tionally and cutting quality of the
trimmers.
“Looking back my four years cooper-
ation with Pinomatic, and trips from
Pinomatic’s Sales Manager Sami
Malinen, we have sold three pro-
jects to the major players in Chilean
woodworking markets. This is very
satisfying for us. And it confirms that
automatization is needed here in
Chilean markets”, says Vasco Ortu-
zar, Business Manager of Innovacion
Nordica. Ortuzar continues: “We are
very optimistic for the future as feed-
back from customers have been only
positive. Our projects have succeed-
ed technically and on schedule. The
productivity increase has been even
better than projected by the custom-
ers, resulting in higher performance,
faster payback and of course, cus-
tomer satisfaction.”

Pinomatic expands its product range in the further processing of logs Matias Rantala, Pinomatic Oy
In March, Pinomatic Oy purchased
the log house production technolo-
gies from Makron Oy. The acquisition
transfered all log and product rights
from Makron to Pinomatic, as well as
machine maintenance, spare parts
and upgrades.
“The log house production machines
and software fit Pinomatic well as
they complement the company’s cur-
rent product range. This gives Pino-
matic an even greater opportunity
to strengthen its supply to the log
house industry both domestically
and in the growing export markets.
As with other solutions, Pinomatic
continues to develop technology for
log production”, says Matias Rantala
the Sales Engineer at Pinomatic.
“The log technology that Makron
has developed over the decades has
found a good home. In the future,
they will focus on core business,
namely machinery manufacturing,
engineering and industrial automa-
tion,” tells Johanna Vuopala the CEO
of Makron Oy.
“The initiative for the deal came from
Hollola. The acquisition of such a
part of the business fits our strategy”,
concludes Rantala.

Haapsalu Uksetehas invests in production automation
As there is no mass production in the factory, Haapsalu Uksetehas manufactures all prod-ucts individually for its customers and prod-ucts are tailored according to the customer’s needs. Production starts from the finger-joint-ed and moulded components made of pine-wood. All products have unique and individual characteristics, starting from taking the meas-urements up to final installation. The compa-ny’s R&D department performs dozens of tests each year in order to ascertain the character-istics and performance of all products. Less energy consumption, waste minimisa-
tion and green thinking have long been key-words for the company. Boiler houses are run on chips from production, aspiration systems with heat exchangers save energy for heating and only water-based finishing materials are used.
A recent investment was made to build a new production hall of 2600 m2 for the new fin-ishing line with sanding technology. One very important and necessary part of the invest-ment was stacking devices, turning device and conveyors delivered by Pinomatic. With these
Pinomatic devices the company managed to minimize manual labour and to improve work-ing environment to be more ergonomic for the employees. The company invests in up-to-date technology and also six CNC machining centres are used in the production.
“Cooperation with Pinomatic team was very smooth throughout the whole project. The finishing of our products is very important part of the manufacturing which meant that the lifting and stacking process needed to be delicate and suitable to all of our products. The design of the stackers and turning device are very well thought through and machines are very reliable. The interface of the machine is very operator friendly and all devices are very easy to use. We are very pleased with our decision by choosing Pinomatic to be our partner in this process. It has been amazing to see how professionally and quickly the Pinomatic team was working throughout the entire project. With this level of cooperation and great overall design of the full equipment, we are convinced that this Pinomatic system will serve our company for many-many years to come”, tells Kati Kadakas, R&D Assistant Manager of Haapsalu Uksetehas.
Haapsalu Uksetehas was founded in 1991 and it was the first factory in Estonia to use modern technology to manufacture interior and exterior doors for private and public buildings. In 1996 production of wooden and wood-aluminium turn-and-tilt windows started, but the main focus is still on doors. The company’s product range is from normal sandwich type interior doors with different core materials and finishing ways, to sound- and fire-rated technical doors for offices, schools, kindergartens, hospitals, hotels, etc. Roughly 50% of the products are exported to Finland, Norway and Sweden.
Kati Kadakas, R&D Assistant Manager and Rene Serg, R&D Manager have been very pleased with the cooperation with Pinomatic.

Long lasting partnership with Protac
In 2007, the installation of its first finishing line marked a new turning point for Protac. Since then, the company has continued to im-prove in quality and volume. Nowadays, Protac transforms 60 000m3 of planed wood per year, on three planing lines, three autoclave tunnels and two finishing lines. The wood material is mainly imported from Scandinavian countries.
In January 2015 Protac’s oldest painting line was damaged by a fire and this incident gave the occasion for the first cooperation between Protac and Pinomatic. Pinomatic was con-sulted for the mechanizations for a new line. In July 2015 the contract was signed for the supply of an automatic feeding of the line by vacuum lifting device, as well as the outfeed equipment with bundle maker and automatic stacking.
The project was successfully implemented. Protac has been impressed by the quality of Pinomatic equipment, as well as by the project management, speed of execution and start up. The support provided during the ramping up and the life of the equipment confirmed these good impressions.
Since this first deal, five years have passed and a total of 4 other projects were concluded:
1. Mechanizations at outfeed of a planer with bundle maker of quality products A and B, as well as automatic stacking.2. Reconditioned shrink packing machine which offers all flexibility to shrink pack bun-dles of planed products and painted products. This is the second shrink packing machine which equips Protac.
3. Mechanizations to link a ripsaw to an exist-ing planing line. These mechanizations enable to singularize the products and infeed them automatically.4. An automatic stick distributing device (sticks cassette) installed above an existing palletizer.
“In addition to these projects, we have under-taken a process of continuous improvement in order to get the most out of the equipment and adapt to products changes. In addition to remote works, we have planned on site visits”, says Mr Jean-Luc Dubois, the Production Manager of Protac.
This series of projects is the best proof of a winning partnership. In the field, all these
projects were erected under the direction of Mr Jean-Luc Dubois, Production Manager: “We have found a reliable partner with Pinomatic and for the long term. The design department has always worked to offer us tailor-made solutions. The assembling team is efficient and the start-up specialists know how to lis-ten and take into account the suggestions of the people on the ground. The various types of equipment we have are reliable.”
We thank Protac company and all their people for this excellent relationship!

Oberstdorf World Championships in sight
Last summer Jasmi came back home from USA where she studied for four years and gradu-ated as a Bachelor of Economics. “Now, after successful studies, I can focus fully on my training and competitions”, cross country ski-er Jasmi Joensuu commented. “The years in Denver, next to the Rocky Moun-tains, were very rewarding. There the training volumes are a bit lower than in Finland, but more power training is done than here. My
body also got used to the thin air, as the study took place at an altitude of 1600 m, and the competitions were mostly above 2000 meters, sometimes even above 3000 meters. My oxy-gen uptake has improved, and I believe it will be very useful in the future”, says Joensuu.
Low snow poses challenges to training
The lack of snow in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area has brought a challenge to training, so most of the training has taken place on the trails of Ylläs and Ounasvaara (in Lapland, Fin-land). Also, Oittaa in Espoo and Hakunila in Vantaa have become familiar training destina-tions for Jasmi when visiting home in Vantaa.
Last winter I spent long periods in Lapland for training, more than 80 days in total. My home is, fortunately, only 7 km from Helsinki-Van-taa airport, so I’ve made parts of the trips by plane”, says Joensuu.
Joensuu continues: “At the start of the past competition season, I had a little uncertainty about my level compared to the Finnish top, as in recent years I had competed in inter-uni-versity competition and only occasionally here in Finland. The season started in Vuokatti at the beginning of November with the Finn-ish Cup where I finished in 5th place in the sprint. In addition, our relay team made it to the medals, being third. This weekend brought more enthusiasm to my training, as I noticed that the Finnish top is not far away.”

Cross-country skier Jasmi Joensuu has a successful competition season behind her, and training for the upcoming season has begun. Last winter she won her first adult Finnish Championship medal and got many valuable World Cup points.
The past season was steadily strong, only at the time of the Ruka World Cup, the short flu period in early December brought a little crack in training.
The goals for the season were clearly met. The most important of them was the first adult Finnish Championship medal and getting points from two World Cup starts. One of the season goals is to get selected in the National Team, but that will not be clear until May.

Access to the National Team would allow for better training, and Jasmi would be able to train with experienced National Team ski-ers. Also having newer and more competitive equipment would be easier.
“Both skiing types are good for me and I prac-tice both equally. That is my strength now and in the future. In adulthood, my best achieve-ments have come from sprint skiing, where the main focus will also be in the next few years. I have also succeeded at short normal distanc-es, as this year Lahti Ski Games I was on World Cup points, with a distance of 10 km in the tra-ditional style”, commented Joensuu.
Goals
The gaze is already focused on the upcoming season. Jasmi’s goal is to get to participate in as many World Cup competitions as possible outside Finland. The main goal is to be part of the Oberstdorf World Championship team, which will be competed in Germany at the turn of February-March 2021.
”I said already when I was seven years old that I would become a world champion. That dream has not disappeared, only modified during these four years. I enjoy the sport as long as it feels good”, says Joensuu.
”During the past competition season I have been able to follow Jasmi’s competitions on the spot for three times, and I have made ob-servations on the suitable properties for ski sports - especially for sprint skiing: explosive speed, courage to make decisions, refusing to compromise in tight battle situations and the appropriate dose of temperament”, says Pinomatic Executive Vice President Petri Ora-vamäki.
“In our cooperation, our goal is to help the young skier to reach the international top, and in turn, we believe we will gain positive visibil-ity for Pinomatic. The young skier is assisted by a close team of experts, such as coaches, her own ski club, parents and equipment care-takes. It is great to be part of this team with our own contribution”, says Oravamäki.
The National Ski Teams were not yet clear at the time of printing this magazine but let
us hope that it will include the name of our young athlete.

Pinomatic encourages employees to move
The goal of physical activities is to maintain and promote working ability and to support the well-being of employees and the quality of their work and thus encourage workplace efficiency and productivity.
“Pinomatic has invested in health-promoting exercise. Company’s own private gym is at the disposal of everyone who wants to exercise. We have small group meetings regularly a couple of times a week. We also have fitness vouchers in use, so everyone can exercise elsewhere if they want,” says Sanna-Mari Vak-kuri, who works in marketing.
Petri Oravamäki, who is responsible for Pino-matic’s well-being at work, says: “The gym was initially located in a 36 m2 room for which we purchased the equipment in the summer of 2003. Already two years later, during the expansion of the production facility, new fa-cilities were built for the gym, and now it occu-pies 85 m2. The lottery is also an incentive for
going to the gym, so once every season, those who go to the gym participate in the gift card lottery. In addition, a badminton court has been painted on the floor of the production facility, and the equipment has been obtained for it.”
Exercise increases well-being
Effective exercise improves endurance, body control, muscular fitness, weight control, joint mobility, and bone strengthening. Proper-ly performed exercise helps you to cope and handle your daily routine better.
”It must be remembered that an athlete pur-sues reputation and honor while practicing,

while those who do exercise for fitness pur-poses need not be interested in sports, it is enough to be interested in their own well-be-ing,” says Oravamäki. “We have also encour-aged our employees to take part in half mar-athons or full marathons, and we have also traveled abroad together to sporting events. Setting an event as a goal motivates you to move in a completely different way. Spouses have also been involved, and we have been running together when preparing for mara-thons. Over the years, some people have tak-en up running as a hobby, and participation in marathons has continued on its own.”
“Regularity, moderate load, and continuity are the hallmarks of fitness. At our company, we believe that physical activity maintains phys-ical and mental capacity, reducing sick leave and thus improving the company’s functional-ity,” Oravamäki continues.
“We have also received support from Janne Haukilahti, a Tampere-based physiotherapy student, in maintaining our fitness level and exercising. He is a masseur and a personal trainer at Proxima Finland in Tampere and will graduate as a physiotherapist within a year. Every six months, Pinomatic has now per-formed body composition measuring with the device that measures basic metabolism, body fluid volume, and fat percentage. About half of Pinomatic employees have taken part in this measurement. In addition, Janne has compiled a diet menu for those interested, adapted to everyone’s own energy consumption and goals,” says Vakkuri.
“Initially, the goal has been to make this a continuous way of doing things and thereby encourage employees to exercise and keep healthy diets, and we are well on our way to achieving that goal,”
Workplace health promotion in oth-er ways as well
The Pinomatic Entertainment Committee has also organized other activities such as track evenings for cars and motorcycles at Botniar-ing, race track in Kurikka, bowling, skeet and trap shooting, boat trips and city tours. In ad-

Reijo Koivisto went on partial disability pen-sion at the beginning of February and is now working part-time: “The decision to apply for a pension was easy, as it started to be difficult to work all day and all week long. Part-time work helped me to continue working, otherwise, I might have got stuck in a sick leave cycle. Today I work 24 hours a week, 6 hours a day, 4 days a week. After all, I have many years of work behind me, and I have been doing metal-work for over 40 years,” says Reijo.
Reijo continues: “Pinomatic has been a good employer for 25 years. It’s great that I was giv-en the opportunity to work part-time. During these years, I have welded, painted, and done everything possible in component manufac-turing. Nowadays, I am responsible for cut-ting steel profiles and organizing component manufacturing. Days change according to the situation and sometimes are very long. In the past, when I was doing painting work, the days tended to be too long, and I had to work in the evenings and on weekends. Now I need to stick to the hours more precisely.”
Meaningful entertainment
Reijo was born as a farm boy in Ikkeläjärvi. “My youth was spent doing farm work, because my parents had a farm. Nowadays, the farm is a forest estate, and its maintenance requires some work: we mainly cut firewood for our own use,” Reijo says.
His hobbies are also related to the forest, as Reijo is an enthusiastic deer, hare, and grouse hunter. He is also involved in hunting parties: the hunt begins in August and continues until February. In addition, berry picking has been a family hobby; picking blueberries and lingon-berries for their own needs.
Dance is also close to Reijo’s heart, as he and his wife practice stage dances all year round. He also enjoys singing and karaoke has occa-sionally taken him even to competitions. Lead-ing an active everyday life keeps him fit - Reijo walks the 3 km distance to work every morning and back home every evening.
Reijo’s family has three adult children and four grandchildren. The children live in Kau-hajoki and Tampere. “A tiny removable red cottage was completed last summer, and we painted it full of dots with the grandchildren. The joint painting left great memories for all of us, especially for the little painters. The idea of a cottage had been in my mind for quite a long time, and then last summer, it was finally ready,” rejoices Reijo.
