Pet ownership is at an all-time high, with 75 million dogs in 45 million house-holds, according to the National PetOwners Survey conducted by the Ameri-can Pet Products Association. And morepeople are hitting the road with theirdogs as well. Neighborhood walks and
days at the park are now expanding tooutings at the dog park and visits to dog-friendly local establishments.
Before hitting the trail or sidewalk with your dog, take a few steps to makesure that your best friend is a good neigh-bor as well.
n Leash trainingMost communities have leash laws.
Even if your dog is well trained, keepinghim or her on a leash is a good idea be-cause dogs can be startled by unfamiliarnoises and run away or bolt into trafc.
nDog parks and dog trainingMany communities now have dog
parks that provide open areas for yourpet to roam, run or romp with other dogs.Make sure your dog has proper obedi-ence training before hitting the park. If your dog knows simple commands, itmakes for a more enjoyable experiencefor everyone.
n The tag’s the thingMany dog parks and recreation ar-
eas require that dogs wear ID tags andtheir current rabies and registrationtags. Even if your dog stays in your yard, tags are a good idea, so you may reunitequickly should your dog slip out.
n Cleaning up after your dog
An average-sized dog weighs 40
pounds and produces about ¾ of apound of waste a day, which translatesto over 13 million tons of waste a year for75 million dogs. The bacteria found inpet waste poses health risks.
Due to the carnivorous feeding hab-its of domestic animals, their waste con-tains bacteria, which in turn can causediseases that are harmful to both hu-mans and pets.
Pet waste has been identied by the
EPA as a major cause of nonpoint sourcepollution caused by rainwater runoff. The EPA and CDC advise that the safestplace for pet waste is bagged and placedin a landll and discourage the compost-ing of pet waste.
n Clean up in styleSince 1995, Bags on Board has en-
couraged pet owners to pick up after
their pets using their stylish dispensers.
The compact, rellable dispensers attacto any type of leash and contain a roll opickup bags. Need a place to stash youkeys, cell phone or other items? Adjust-able and fashionable Purse Dispens-ers and Pouch Dispensers can be woraround the waist or across the chest andiscreetly dispense pickup bags and pro-
vide storage for other items. Other fudispensers, such as the Ball Dispenser
are also available.
Be a responsible owner: Pick up after your petBIG
IDEA: HavingBags onBoardmakesit easier to pickup after your pets theproper way.(NAPSIPhoto)

Pioneer Classic BIG BUCK CONTEST
Mecosta County’s Oldest Big Buck Contest
Contest Rules The contest for 2010 is a two category event, both archers and rifle hunters can participate. Archers harvesting a buck (only)
may enter by bringing the entire (no capes or heads) buck to our Pioneer Office, 115 N. Michigan Ave., Big Rapids, October
1st through the end of the archery season December 31, 2010. The buck will be measured and photographed during the hours
of 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Rifle hunters begin their phase of the contest on November 15, 2010 and run
through the end of black-powder season. The same requirements and times apply.
Winners will be determined by a point system combining a measurement at the widest spread on the main beams
(outside spread) and the number of points (a point must be at least an inch in length). For Example: 8 points + 20 inch
outside width = 28 points.
Only bucks with four points or more or hunters with their first buck will be photographed. The photo will be published in
the Pioneer as soon as possible to the time of entry.
No entries from privately owned sanctuaries will be accepted.
Only whitetail deer qualify for the contest.
Only one entry per hunter unless the second buck is a contest prize contender in which case only one prize will be
awarded.
Prizes will be awarded at the Big Buck Award Dinner which will be announced at a later date.
Any entry that is suspected of being illegally taken will be referred to the Michigan Department of Natural resources.
The immediate families of Pioneer Group employees are not eligible to compete in the contest.
In case of a tie, the winner will be determined by the first Pioneer recorded entry.
Parking is available in front or back of the Pioneer building or in a nearby city lot.Good Luck!

HypertensionThis is the medical term for high blood pressure. In the medical world there are two types of hypertension.
Essential hypertension means there is no obvious known cause of the high blood pressure. Thirty years ago when aperson was found to have persistent high blood pressure we would do a bunch of tests to try to find the cause of the problem. Rarely a cause was found. Most of the time the diagnosis in these cases, was essential hypertension.
The normal blood pressure for adults is around 120/80. The all wise AMA keeps lowering the standard, but thisis a good number. BP will vary with age, body size and gender. The circulatory system is basically a hydraulic system
with four pumps and many miles of microscopic tubing, arteries, veins, and capillaries which bring nutrients to andremove wastes from all of the trillions of cells in our body. The blood pressure is constantly being monitored andmodulated based on the body’s needs.
When we run or work hard physically, the BP will go up, sometimes to 240/120, and then return to normal withrest. This is what is supposed to happen. The difficulty arises when the BP does not return to normal at rest.
Since the hydraulic system is design to handle certain pressures, it will be damaged if the pressure is too high.Much like your garden hose, if it is rated for 40 psi, then lower than that is the best pressure. But if you run itat 60 psi, it will not blow up today, but over time it will wear out sooner than it would if you follow the designspecifications. So keeping the resting pressure at 120/80 will allow the blood vessels to last longer.
If the BP runs too high, damage occurs and plaque is laid down to fix the damaged spot. Eventually this repairedarea will have calcium added to it and “hardening of the arteries” will occur. This loss of elasticity will cause further damage to the blood vessels and further increase high bloodpressure.
Reduce and eliminate all stimulants. These things will raise blood pressure andincrease damage to the wall of the arteries. Caffeine in any form constricts the blood
vessel, increasing the pressure. Sudafed, pseudoephedrine, or any cold medicine withdecongestant (D, like Claritin D) will raise blood pressure. Tobacco in any form will raisethe BP. Salt will hold extra water in your circulation, causing swelling, and increased BP.One teaspoon of salt will hold eight pounds of water in your system. Drink 40 – 60 ozchlorine-free water per day to keep your body well hydrated. Since every pound of body
fat contains hundreds of feet of extra blood vessels, weight elimination is a great way to
reduce blood pressure.Keeping the BP in good control is a good idea.
