After a positive preseason and a great first few weeks of practice, we will kick off our
2016-17 season at home against Adrian College on Tuesday, November 15. Our team
has many high expectations for the season and are excited to get it started.
Our returning players are led by our
senior guard, Jordanna Rauch.
Rauch brings excellent shooting as
well as a veteran presence to the
team, as she has played in every
game the past three seasons in the
Navy Blue and White. Rauch has
also been named a captain for the
team the previous two seasons.
Our junior class features a great mix
of talent and experience. Our team
will return All-OAC point guard Amisha Herd.
Herd led our team in points and assists last
year, as well as setting a program record for steals in a season. Brooke Borich finished
last year as one of the top playmaking guards in the conference and is poised to have an
even bigger season as a junior. Ashley Barker is expected to take on a bigger role after
starting nine games over her first two seasons as a Pioneer. Jenna Andersen figures to
anchor the post for the Pioneers as she had a strong finish to her sophomore campaign.
Laura Frazee and Marra Woods round out the skilled Junior class.
The Sophomore class is led by forward Corrie Burkhardt, who had a great first year with
the Pioneers in the 2015-16 season. Burkhardt started every game as a freshman and
leading our team in rebounds, averaging 8.4 rebounds per game. In addition to
Burkhardt, we have another skilled sophomore in the post. Jo Herd-Middlebrooks had a
great first year in the Navy Blue and White as she averaged 5.3 points and 5.2 rebounds
per game. Shay Lett, Nikki Macke, and Erin Warvell are expected to have roles in the
success of our team this season.
We also welcome three freshmen to our team. The three freshmen include Alexis
Enochs, Destiny Johnson, and Maddy Worden.
Head Coach Kole Vivian commented, “We have high expectations this year. We are
young with only one senior, but have most of our nucleus back from last year. I am
looking forward to competing in one of the best conference in America with this group.”
It should be an exciting season inside Ban Johnson Arena for the Pioneers!

2016-17 Season Preview
Pioneer Press -Marietta College Women’s Basketball Monthly Newsletter November 2016
The 2016-17 Marietta College women’s basketball team.
On Tuesday, November 8, we had the honor of hosting a very special guest on campus. MaeOla Bolton, best known for her playing time at Auburn University in the 1980’s and her professional career, came to visit the team and tell us her story. She spoke passionately about the game and how it has prepared her for anything life has thrown her way.
While at Auburn, she played in the 1988 National Tournament game against Pat Summit and the Lady Vols. She then had a time where she played professionally in Europe and made it to the final cut of playing for the 1988 gold medal winning USA Women’s basketball team. She then began her coaching career at the college level, first at the University of Florida and then Tulane.
While at Tulane, she suffered a neck injury in a car accident. She overcame the adversity of doctors telling her she will never walk again or be able to play basketball again. She proved the doctors prediction wrong and was able to make the roster for the Detroit Shock.
She hit on many topics our athletes and coaches were able to relate to. Our team’s biggest take away was to not take your life or health for granted.
The team was hooked on every word MaeOla spoke. Sophomore Shay Lett said, “MaeOla is a true inspiration. She is a walking miracle. She is the perfect example of why you should go hard everyday with everything that you do and to not take a single thing for granted.”
She now gives back to the game in different ways. She hosts clinics and while traveling to help in hospitals, she stops to speak with teams about her experiences. She also leads a group on Facebook to help people keep a healthy mind, body, and spirit.

Pioneer Madness One of the best things about being a student-athlete at Marietta College is the support from the community. We have been one of the league leaders in fan attendance over the last four seasons. To show our appreciation to the community, we combined with the men’s basketball team to meet the community and showcase our skills in an event called “Pioneer Madness.”
“Pioneer Madness” began with player introductions as we ran out to greet the crowd. Each of our players signed a basketball and gave them away to kids and fans in the stands who came out to support us. We then had members of the team participate in practice drills, celebrity knockout, and a hot shot competition. Jenna Anderson said, “I love Pioneer Madness! The atmosphere is crazy, the energy is fun, and it’s a really cool way to introduce our new team to the students and community.”
