1993 in the Media:
1993 Year in Review : VIOLENCE : Tracking the Media-Violence Explosion
It was another year of living dangerously. Turn on televisionin 1993 and there was proof galore that America seemed
awash in violence. Terrorists tried to blow up the world's tallest building. A
gunman blasted commuters inside a railway car. A 12-year-oldgirl was abducted from a slumber party and strangled.Followers of a fiery preacher met a fiery end. And that
Reginald Denny tape repeated over and over and over.

Psychopaths?Twisted Rationalizations
Ted Bundy in prison
"I'm the most cold-blooded sonofabitch you'll ever meet,"said Ted Bundy. "I just liked to kill, I wanted to kill."The hallmark of the psychopath is the inability to recognize
others as worthy of compassion. Victims are dehumanized, flattened into worthless objects in the murderer's mind.John Gacy, never showing an ounce of remorse, called his victims "worthless little queers and punks," whilethe "Yorkshire Ripper" Peter Sutcliffe brashly declared that
he was "cleaning up the streets" of the humantrash.

The following are environmental factors, psychiatrists say, which create a sociopath:
Studies show that 60% of psychopathic individualshad lost a parent;
Child is deprived of love or nurturing; parents are
detached or absent; Inconsistent discipline: if father is stern and mother
is soft, child learns to hate authority and manipulatemother;
Hypocritical parents who privately belittle the childwhile publicly presenting the image of a "happyfamily".

In the 19th century, psychopathology was considered to be "moralinsanity". Today it is commonly known as "antisocial personalitydisorder" or "sociopathology." Current experts believe thatsociopaths are an unfortunate fusion of interpersonal, biological and sociocultural disasters.
Psychopaths/sociopaths are diagnosed by theirpurposeless and irrational antisocial behavior, lack ofconscience, and emotional vacuity. They are thrill seekers, literally fearless. Punishment rarely works, because they areimpulsive by nature and fearless of the consequences. Incapable ofhaving meaningful relationships, they view others as fodder formanipulation and exploitation. According to one psychologicalsurveying tool (DSM IIIR) between 3-5% of men are sociopaths;less than 1% of female population are sociopaths.
Psychopaths often make successful businessmen or world leaders. Not all psychopaths are motivated to kill. But when it is easy todevalue others, and you have had a lifetime of perceived injusticesand rejection, murder might seem like a natural choice.

Genetics
Tests are showing that the nervous system of the psychopath is markedly different they feel less fear andanxiety than normal people. One carefully conducted experiment revealed that "low arousal levels" notonly causes impulsiveness and thrill-seeking, but also showed how dense sociopaths are when it comes tochanging their behavior. A group of sociopaths and a group of healthy individuals were given a task, which
was to learn what lever (out of four) turned on a green light. One lever gave the subject an electric shock. Both groups made the same number of errors, but the healthy group quickly learned to avoid thepunishing electric shock, while sociopaths took much longer to do so.
This need for higher levels of stimulation makes the psychopath seek dangerous situations. When Gacyheard an ambulance, he would follow to see what sort of exciting catastrophe was in the making. Part of
the reason for many serial killers seeking to become cops is probably due to the intensity of the job. Genetics and physiological factors also contribute to the building of a psychopath. One study in
Copenhagen focused on a group of sociopaths who had been adopted as infants. The biological relatives ofsociopaths were 4-5 times more likely to be sociopathic than the average person. Yet genetics don't tell the
whole story; it only shows a predisposition to antisocial behavior. Environment can make or break thepsychopathic personality.
When a psychopath does inherit genetically-based, developmental disabilities, its is usually a stunteddevelopment of the higher functions of the brain. 30-38% of psychopaths show abnormal brain wavepatterns, or EEGs. Infants and children typically have slower brain wave activity, but it increases as theygrow up. Not with psychopaths. Eventually, the brain might mature as the psychopath ages. This may be
why most serial killers are under 50. The abnormal brain wave activity comes from the temporal lobes andthe limbic system of the brain, the areas that control memory and emotions. When development of thispart of the brain is genetically impaired, and the parents of the child are abusive, irresponsible ormanipulative, the stage is set for disaster.
Can psychopaths be successfully treated? According to the psychiatrists, "No." Shock treatment doesn'twork; drugs have not proven successful in treatment; and psychotherapy, which involves trust and arelationship with the therapist, is out of the question, because psychopaths are incapable of opening up toothers. They don't want to change.

Syria conflict takes its toll on two millionchildren
A leading charity warns two million Syrian children have had their lives tornapart, as the Prince of Wales, on a visit to a Jordanian refugee camp, describestheir plight as "heartbreaking".
In a new report, Save the Children described Syria's children as the "forgotten
victims", and warned that they are at constant risk of malnutrition, disease, trauma and, in the case of girls, being married off at a young age in a bid toprotect them from burgeoning sexual violence.
Ahead of talks starting in London today between Foreign Secretary WilliamHague and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, which are likely to bedominated by the conflict, the charity urged the international community to pushfor an end to the violence that has torn Syria apart.
Jasmine Whitbread, Save the Children's international chief executive, said: "Formillions of Syrian children, the innocence of childhood has been replaced by thecruel realities of trying to survive this vicious war. Many are now living rough, struggling to find enough to eat, without the right medicine if they become sick orinjured.
"As society has broken down, in the worst cases, hunger, homelessness and terrorhave replaced school for some of these young people. We cannot allow this tocontinue unchecked; the lives of too many children are at stake."

...Continued Story
Traumatised The Prince of Wales described the plight of Syrian refugees as "heartbreaking" as he toured a Jordanian camp near the border
of the civil war torn nation. The prince and the Duchess of Cornwall were greeted by United Nations staff at the King Abdullah Park camp, which is home
to just under 1,000 people who have fled the two-year-old conflict. Speaking at the refugee camp HQ, Charles said he had been struck by the generosity of the Jordanian people. "Many of these children have been traumatised by the horrors of what they've witnessed before they got here," he said.Lives torn apart after conflict Save the Children's report Childhood Under Fire, launched to mark two years of fighting in the Middle Eastern country that
has claimed 70,000 lives, says many children are struggling to find enough to eat.
Thousands are living in barns, parks and caves and are unable to go to school because teachers have fled and schools havebeen attacked. Young boys are also being used by armed groups as porters, runners and human shields, bringing themdangerously close to the frontline, it warns.
The report, which includes research carried out amongst refugee children by Bahcesehir University in Turkey, says one inthree children reported having been hit, kicked or shot at during the conflict.
A lost world? Life for a Syrian child in 2007-8 (Unicef research) The Syrian Arabic Republic ranked number 123 in the world for under-five mortality rates. That is lower than Fiji, Brazil and
Saudi Arabia. The youth literacy rate for 15 to 24 year old males was 95 per cent, and 92 per cent for females. 92 per cent of children who entered the first grade of primary school managed to reach the last grade of primary school. Three in every four Syrian children interviewed had lost a loved one because of the fighting. Children are being killed and
maimed too, it warned, including by the indiscriminate use of shells, mortars and rockets. Thousands face malnutrition asfood production is crippled and damage to sanitation systems has raised the risk of disease, it says.
Girls are being married off early to ensure that they have someone who can protect them from sex attacks. And fuel priceshave risen by up to 500%, leaving families struggling during the winter.

Robert Thompson was the tough one, the oneeveryone assumed to be the ringleader in thecase. But Robert's personality was constructed notso much out of aggression as for the purposes of
defence. He lived in a rough, even brutalenvironment. To survive the multiple assaults ofhis five older brothers and alcoholic mother,Robert developed a flinty edge. He didn't look fortrouble as much as he tried to slip out and awayfrom it. When cornered, he would lie, cry, or takehis beating with defiance.

Robert was not aggressive as much as sly. A poor student, he skipped school, but when he did

of others.
Robert was both hindered by his reputation as aThompson, but also seemed to hide behind it. Teachers didn't expect much from him and other kids

He banged his head on thefurniture, against the wall, and would throw himself onthe floor. Jon cut himself with scissors and tore at hisown clothing. But sometimes his self-destruction
pivoted outward. He roamed around the classroom, tearing down the displays and artwork of otherstudents. Jon stood on his desk and threw things atother children. Teachers documented his disruptiveantics they had never seen anything like it before.
