Synopsis

The film begins the main character, Hugo (who has just left prison) having a flashback to how he was arrested.

After he is released from prison he returns home to find that his life is in ruins; his family has been completely neglected by the gang that promised to look after them. He then confronts them to find out why this has happened.

Hugo agrees to help the police in catching his former friends and goes back to the gang and pretends to be friends with them again, however they don’t know that he is wearing a wire so that the police can hear everything they are saying.

It ends with the gang all being arrested after one last drug deal and Hugo looking at them being arrested; just like they did to him.

Certification

The certification for our film is going to be a 15. it can be classified as a 15 because there is evidence of dangerous behaviour and violence, which would make it unsuitable to have a 12 certificate. The reason we are putting this as a 15 is because we are not showing any drug specimen. When Hugo is dealing the drugs, the camera would not show the substances although the audience would be aware that he is selling drugs. It wasn’t an 18 because there isn't any violence, drugs or sex in this scene; the closest thing to violence is when the police officers are chasing the two characters.

Audience

We are targeting our film at the male teenage demographic because of the success of films such as kidulthood and its sequel, adulthood

The film could also appeal to the middle age male market because of the success of older gangster movies like “Goodfellas”

Main Character Profile

Hugo (Character 1) – Personal Traits: Exposes his softer after seeing the state his property and family have been left in. His current mental state encourages himself to turn a new leaf and join the police. Although he starts off as a powerful and influential figure, his softer side makes him appear as just a normal person towards the end of the film.

Physical Traits: At the beginning of the film, he wears casual grey/black clothing. This could possibly connote mystery and builds up the suspense. Also, his tone of voice and constant facial expression proves he is in control of the situation, but ironically he isn’t as he goes to prison. However, he is in full control come end of the film.

Continued…

Mike (Character 2) – Personal Traits: Mike appears to have a close relationship with Hugo while they are doing the drug deal. However we soon find out that Mike has forgotten about Hugo’s family and a more sinister side to him comes out.

Physical Traits: Mike also wears a hoodie just like Hugo. His tone of voice and worried facial expressions connote that he is scared of the situation and this contrasts the look of Hugo who seems confident. This connotes that he is not a powerful figure.

Conventions of Genre

Violence, the use of deadly weapons and illegal substances are usually included within Gangster movies.

Romance may be included in certain circumstances.

Many films have memorable one-liners. For example, “Say hello to my little friend” – Scarface.

Storyline usually takes place in urban areas with back streets and alleyways. However, other typical locations include the gang’s den/hideout, casinos, pool halls, bars, clubs and the streets.

Most of the time there is a rise and a fall (Structure).

Gangsters could be thus seen as fulfilling the ‘American Dream’ (Like Scarface), not by the traditional route of hard work, but instead through criminal activities which commonly see them face prison for a certain amount of years – depending on how severe the crime was.

The main character is a person who dislike his low status and desperately wants to rise up to the upper echelons

The main character(s) are driven by the desire for wealth and status

The iconography we expect includes suits, jewelry, cigars, flash cars, alcohol, money and food, representing the “high life”

Low key lighting, shadows, enclosed spaces and over-exposed blues and reds emphasise the violent, secretive and lawless lives that the characters lead.
