POST GAME QUOTESPITTSBURGH STEELERS vs. BALTIMORE RAVENS

Sunday, November 9, 1997— Three Rivers Stadium (59,600), Pittsburgh, Pa.Re

READ COACH BILL COWHEE: "Obviously you can't give enough credit to our defense. They put us in a

situation in the first half-- we really couldn't get much going offensively and the defense gave us some points. I

thought we played better offensively in the second half. Tip your hats to the defense and to the kicking game.

What a great tackle Norm (Johnson) made. It was a good night.

Re: Norm Johnson kicking well early and 52-yard kick: "Norm's been kicking the ball real well. The whole

operation -- everything we've done -- he feels comfortable with. That was a big kick. The one that we got called

back, he really cleared the thing by a lot so it looked like 52 yards would be welt within his reach. He had a great

night. I thought he kicked off really well as well.

Re: shutout: "it's hard to fault anything when you look at our defense. I don't know what more you'd ask them

to do. On special teams we didn't have any real big plays but I thought we were solid. Offensively we played

better in the second half although we again were a little spurty in the first half. But give some credit to Baltimore.

They played well defensively. But at the same time, we hit some plays, we capitalized on some things.

Contrast Monday night with tonight: "I think defensively last Monday night we didn't play a good game yet we

held them to 13 points. That's the thing that I felt really good about. Everyone on the defense felt like we didn't

do some things yet there was only one touchdown being scored. I think there's a good feeling right now. Guys

are getting better every week. We've got some good stiff challenges ahead of us. This was a great effort. It was a

different game. It's been a while since we played Baltimore the first time and we've come together a little bit

defensively.

This team didn't look capable five weeks ago of shutting another team down like thi& "1 think it's a case of these

guys becoming acclimated to what we're doing, how we're doing it. Again, we had a lot of new starters. When

you get a group of guys starting to finally understand one another, with what we do defensively, throwing new

people in, it's going to take tine. There's a lot of communication that needs to be done. There are a lot of things

that you can't really cover until you go through a game. I think you're seeing a product of a bunch of guys that

are playing together, believing in one another and who obviously put together a pretty good football game tonight.

Re: Norm Johnson's tackle: "it was a great tackle. We were working on that for weeks. The amazing thing is,

we had the thing pinned. You're looking at a ball that should have been downed inside the 10 and if Normdoesn't make that tackle, the guy's gone. He went from a situation that looked good to very bleak to looking great

after the tackle. Not only did he tackle him, he caused a fumble. It was a big time hit. It was impressive. He had

the look in his eye coming off too. I like that. Maybe we'll have some more depth in the secondary now.

Have you ever been involved in a game where one of the teams turned the ball over six times? "Itjust seemed like

we were getting the tips. Balls were getting tipped and they just happened to be falling into our hands. You'vegot to give some credit because we had six turnovers but only got 20 points on the board. So we really didn't do

a lot with it, outside of kicking some field goals and not turning it over ourselves. But again, the defense did agreat job. They created some of it. They were there and they took advantage of the opportunities on the tippedballs.

Baltimore was able to ston Jerome Bettis in the first hall: "1 guess. It's hard to sit here now and look at it.

Certainly you have to look at it next week. They did a good job of bottling him up. It was going to be a grind. We knew that going in. We didn't convert a few third downs, couldn't get into much rhythm, that was a problemagain. I thought we threw the ball better in the second half. You've got to throw the football in this league. Youknow we're going to run the football. That's going to be our makeup. But if you're not throwing the balleffectively, that puts a lot of pressure on the running game. When we started throwing the ball a little bit, youcould see some of the running game start to open up.

Was it the new look secondary: "It wasn't that new look. We had Camell (Lake) in the slot. That's how weplayed him last time, so we played him the same way. I thought Chad Scott played a good game. He's going tobe a good football player. One thing I like about Chad is he's a very physical player. A couple times they caughtthe ball, they went down immediately. Carnell has just played outstanding. Donnell Woolford, J.B. Brown —give some credit to them. Myron Bell, Darren Perry, the entire secondary played very solid tonight.

Is Carnell back to strong safety now? "We'll have to take a look at it this week.

Re: Injuries: "I think Mitch Lyons is the most serious injury that we have. It doesn't look like he'll be playingnext week. It could be longer, we'll have to see."

LB LEVON KIRKLAND: "Things just went out way today. We played with a lot of energy. We disguised alot and threw some things at Vinny (Festaverde). We got our hands up and got some lucky breaks today.

Unlike in Kansas City, you stopoed the run today: "Stopping the run is about playing the gaps anddoing yourjob. We did a good job of shutting down the gaps. It's a good win for us. Kansas City did a good job runningthe ball, but we know that we're a good team at stopping the run. We are becoming a better defense. You'regoing to have days like we had in Kansas City, but today makes it all the better."

Wit/KR WILL BLACKWELL: You SI to be pleased with the offensive prochiction in the first half: "No.We got six turnovers from them and we only had 20 points. We weren't pleased at all. Our team's better thanthat. But we came back out when they weren't tuning the ball over and did something with it in the second half."

LB EARL HOLMES: "We disguised a lot of defenses tonight. The guys were rotating and we were schemingand disguising defenses and I guess the quarterback didn't pick up on it. He was throwing the ball right to thedefense.

You got off to a fast start tonight: "That's what we're looking for. We're getting on down the road In the seasonand we're looking to play our best football starting now. Coach Cowher told us to come out and jump on themand stay on them. That was our game plan. We stuck with the game plan."

WR YANCEY THIGPEN: Is it nice to get some of those one-yard it drives? "It is. It makes it a lot easier. The credit goes to our defense. They did a great job. They came out and took the ball away several times to putus in great position. It's really easy when, as an offense, you go into the game and you are already in the redzoneor you're already across the 50. It gives you a little different perspective. It gives you a little more of a sense ofurgency to get it in the endzone."

RB JEROME BETTIS: 'We knew they would have lots of people in the box and they would make it tough torun the ball. I got what, 114 yards? But they really played us hard. We beat a good defensive team tonight.

How important were the first two drives in the third quarter? "We knew we should have had a bigger halftimelead after all the turnovers. So to take it right down there for 10 points on two possessions, we knew the gamewas out of reach midway through the quarter,"

K NORM JOHNSON: Talk about the tackle and forced fumble on the kickoff: "I knew 1 had to make thetackle and somehow I was able to get my helmet on the ball.

It looked like you had great technique: "Yeah. I was pretty proud of myself. I knew when the return man and Icollided, I had made a good tackle. I hope the league doesn't fine me for leading with my helmet.

Was there any doubt that Coach Cowher would let von kick the 52-yarder after the oenaltv? "He asked me what Ithought and I said, 'let's do it.' I really hit the 42-yarder solid. I'm glad we didn't punt."

DR CARNELL LAKE: "We know how important it is to get on Vinny (Testaverde) early and to make himstart to think. We made some good defensive plays and we got some luck too. Our defense was able to keep theiroffense on their heels.

Why do you guys have so much success against Testaverde? 'We just react him well and take advantage of otherthings their offense gives us. But mainly, we just have great schemes against him and his offense."

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR JIM HASLE17: Re: seven turnovers: "To be honest, J.B. (Brown) hadtwo in his hands and Chad (Scott) had one in his hands. We could have probably had nine or 40. We were firstin the Aft going in and we stress it all the time. If we stop the run and get turnovers and give the offense thefootball, we will have a good chance to win. We were hurt in some areas early in the season, but if we keepgetting turnovers, we've got a good chance to win in this league."

POST GAME QUOTESPITTSBURGH STEELERS vs. BALTIMORE RAVENS

Sunday, November 9, 1997 — Three Rivers Stadium (59,600), Pittsburgh, Pa.Regular Season Week 10

STEELERS OUOTES

OS KORDELL STEWART:

Comments on contrast of the two games in the series: The first game, that wasn't my intention tothrow three interceptions. In this game, this is the way I wanted to start, with four interceptions.I didn't complete passes that I know I should have completed, yet at the same time, the defensedid a great job for us today. They put us in position to score some points early on in the game.

Comments on Norm Johnson's He's the man. He put his helmet right in there. Youdon't see too many kickers or punters get up in there and stick their head up in there, who fumblethe ball and give us an opportunity to recover it. He did a great job of getting in there andknocking the ball out.

Comments on first, half oroblems: I think it was just me pretty much just not taking what theygive me, trying to go out aüd doing a little bit more than I normally would do. The coverage wasperfect, everything I saw and read was exactly like we practiced it. I basically just tried to makesome things happen but it all came back to saying, ¶Kordell, just hit your first read." There wasno problem with what I was doing, but when you don't complete the pass you say, "Well, youshould have." But if you complete it, it's no problem..

Comments on TD nass to Yancey Thigpen: When receivers see certain things going on during thegame, they basically come back and tell me and tell Coach3ailey that we need to come out andtry this next time. And we came out and we tried it, and he came open exactly where weexpected. Those guys were sitting on the routes at 15 yards. We thought we'd give a little move

at 15 yards and try to do something.

Comments on being ready for last stretch run of the season I just need to get better every thy.Because we're 7-3 right now, doesn't mean that I can relax or anything like that. I could neverrelax and be content. I'm doing pretty good so far. I'm not upset, I'm not mad, I'm notdisappointed. I'm excited because we're 7-3, but individually, I still feel that I have to go out and

start something in the first half. We have the good teams coming up.

Comments on his TD run: It was a nice one-hopper.

RAVENS QUOTES

UEALUXJACI I TEL) MARCIUURODA:

(('ventral conunents) We just got beat by the better team today. The out liii us, (hey out$IJayC(I us, they may have even out coached us. learn isn'I the word. We have in hen!teams along the way. We have six games to go. We dug ourselves a bigger hole. Whatwe have to do now is run the table. We've played tough games here. This is probably theworst defeat.

(Comments on Vinny Testaverde) lie said he was all right ready to go. H we weregoing to count back to win the game, I thought we had to come back and win ii with hun.lie said his ribs were bothering him.

(Cuninuents on the second hall) I thought they gave the effort. We wasted a linedefensive erfort. We really did with all those turnovers and field positions. We wasted adefensive effort. I think the defense fought. We Fought to the end. Being 37-0, it'stough.

(Coiwnents on the offense) It's hard to pinpoint one thing. 'Iliey just outplayed us andwe didn't do anything—we couldn't throw, we couldn't run. It's pretty tough to win a

ball game. We're making too many too many mistakes. We can't have Fumbles

such as we had. You're going to get interceptions at times, but we're getting too many. The fumbles are disturbing a little bit.

(Comments on being shutout) We played a good football team today. There are going to

be times during the course of a season where you're going to.get blown out. We did it atthe inopportune time. It's not the time to do it, but there are going to be times it's goingto happen. It happens to pretty much everybody during the course or a year. They'llrespond. They responded pretty much every time thus far. What we have to do now isrun the table. This is probably as close as we can get (hitting bottom). It's as close as

we've ever been. We learn from it and forget about it.

CB ANTONIO LANOHAM:

(General comments on the game) Basically we were beat convincingly. They did nothingdifferent. They came out and ran (heir offense. They took it right to us. Their defensetook it right to our offense. They got on top and they did what any good team would dowhen they've got you clown. They go fc,r lIve kill.

(Comments on overcoming 7 tujmovers and II penalties) It's hard to win especially in this

league. One turnover 'is sometimes the difference in the whole game, but 7 turnoversagainst a team like Pittsburgh—they are going to capitaliie on it.

(Continents on the difficulties with the Ravens franchise winning in Pittsburgh) When we

had the rivalry when we were in Cleveland, it was a battle. Now we are still in a battle and

It's tough to take one like this to the chin, especially when you don't put any points on the

board. It's a tough call right now. It will be a long time to get over this one. We're

going to have to put this one behind us, but this is going to be one that you're going to

think about For awhile.

WR MIChAEL JACKSON:

(Comments on overcoming the deficit today) That's not the biggest problem we have

had. We've had other teams to get a lead on us. As people say momentum, I've seen uscome back before, and I know we can do it. I just didn't understand our offense not

(over)

Page 17: PITTSBURGH STEELERS vs. BALTIMORE RAVENS RAVENS …prod.static.steelers.clubs.nfl.com/assets/images/imported/Media... · PITTSBURGH STEELERS vs. BALTIMORE RAVENS ... 76 Kevii HENRI

scoring any points. We've went from a 30 point offense to what you saw out theretonight. That's not us, so where's the problem. Where? What? W&ve got lo find it.We've got to try to get back to where we were.

(Comments on today's turnovers) I think we had enough turnovers for a whole seasonout there today. It's kind of hard to come back from those type of mistakes. Once a teamlike Pittsburgh gets the momentum going their way and you're continuing giving them theball on their 50 or inside it (scoring territory),it's kind of difficult to bounce back fromthat.

(Have you ever had six turnovers in a halt) No, I don't think so. I don't even recall thathappening in high school.

OH VINNY TESTAVERDR

They beat us, and they beat us good. We played terrible,, and obviously the score showedit and our play showed it. Quite frankly, I feel embarrassed the way we played. There'snothing that we can do except Erying to bounce back from this. I know it's tough. Wedidn't deserve it.

(Comments on coming out of the game) Before the game, I felt like I was okay to play, but the one hit that I took just hart my ribs. It seemed like it had an effect on throwing theball. I told coach that it might be time for Eric (Zeier) to step in and see what he can do,because! really wasn't getting the job done.

DR CARNELL LAKE: "We know how important it is to get on Vinny (Testaverde) early and to make himstart We made some good defensive plays and we got some luck too. Our defense was able to keep theiroffense on their heels.

Why do you guys have so much success against Testaverde? "We just read him well and take advantage of otherthings their offense gives us. But mainly, we just have great schemes against him and his offense."

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR JIM UASLEfl: Re: seven turnovers: "To be honest, LB. (Brown) hadtwo in his hands and Chad (Scott) had one in his hands. We could have probably had nine cc 10. We were firstin the AFC going in and we stress it all the time. If we stop the run and get turnovers and give the offense thefootball, we will have a good chance to win. We were hurt in some areas early in the season, but if we keepgetting turnovers, we've got a good chance to win in this league."
