MACC.3.G.1.2- Partition shapes into parts with equal areas. Express the area of each part as a unit if fraction of the whole. For example, partition a shape into 4 parts with equal area and describe the area of each part as ¼ of the area of the shape.

Idea/Standard- Reason with shapes and their attributes.

Body of Knowledge- Geometry.

MACC.3.NF.1.2.- Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.

Idea/Standard- Develop understanding of fractions as numbers.

Body of Knowledge- Numbers and Operations- Fractions.

Pizza Pete was the best pizza maker in town. He loved making pizzas for everyone. But Pizza Pete only knew how to make whole pizzas.

One day the Fraction Family was looking for a new place to eat. Franny Fraction said, “why don’t we go to Pizza Pete’s.”

“But remember, he only serves whole pizzas. He can’t fraction pizzas like we want.” Said Fred Fraction.

“Well, why don’t we show him how easy it can be to fraction a pizza.” Flo Fraction said. So off the Fractions went to Pizza Pete.

When the Fraction family arrived at Pizza Pete’s, Pete greeted them with a big smile. He offered a nice whole pepperoni pizza for dinner. But he Fractions said they only wanted pepperoni on half of the pizza. This confused Pizza Pete.

So Fred Fraction showed Pizza Pete what ½ a pizza with pepperoni looked like. “What a marvelous idea!” Said Pizza Pete

“Can you show me more pizza fractions so my customers get exactly what they want on their pizza?”

Franny Fraction wants her pizza with only ¼ pepperoni.
